Our studio, Pueo's Perch, (named for the Hawaiian Owl) is located on the slopes of Hualalai on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are in the area known as Holualoa, which is considered Upcountry Kona. Holualoa is known as an Artist's & Coffee community~ well demonstrated in our quaint village center. Pueo's Perch is at the 1200 ft elevation, so we enjoy cool mornings & evenings with a healthy dose of sunshine in between. We are located just 15 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from the coastal town of Kailua-Kona, 10 minutes from the Artists' Village of Holualoa and just 10 minutes from Costco. A number of wonderful beaches are also within this 10-15 minute drive time...access to all you wish to explore is simple.
Holualoa is a rural area with an old neighborhood feel. We are friendly with all our neighbors, human & animal alike. Our area is generally pretty quiet. There is some road noise during peak commuting hours, but Kona is a sleepy town, so that never lasts long.
This quaint studio sits apart from the main house on the back of our 10,000 sqft property, with its own parking and pathway. This is a loft studio with Koa and Bamboo flooring throughout and a large outdoor, covered lanai. Unique island artists touches give a nod to our gallery village nearby. Pueo's Perch comes turn-key furnished. A full kitchen allows you to prepare as many meals as you'd like. There is a full bathroom with tiled shower stall, as well as large closet to store your luggage. The hallway, bath and closet do have lower than normal ceiling heights. These areas are 6'7' in ceiling height.
The main sleeping area is a loft, requiring the climbing of built-in ladder. There is a full-size bed and room to stow your personal items in the loft** (see photos for configuration)** The main living area also features a couch that converts easily into a full-size futon. The living area is simply furnished with natural woods and local treasures. TV & DVD player & free WiFi. The front entry way is covered and screened and has a washer/dryer located here for your convenience. A large, covered lanai offers additional space to enjoy the fresh air, watch the birds & butterflies, listen to the fountain and perhaps do some stretching or napping.
This unit is perfect for one couple +, maximum 4 people. Okay for children, but please note that we do not claim to be child-proof. The overall square footage including the loft area & lanai is 500 sqft. This studio is not handicap accessible as it has stone steps to entry and ladder to sleeping loft.
Pueo's Perch shares the backyard with our main house, but, by all means feel free to meander and sniff a rose in bloom. We enjoy tinkering in the garden very much and as a result there is quite a variety of flowers, foliage & vegetables planted all around the yard. There is a small pond with plants, fish, and Cattaleya, our pet turtle. We welcome wishes always...look for the little pot with glittery glass to make your wish with. There are pets on the property, as well. Several cats deem us worthy to feed them. They will all be as friendly as you'd like them to be, but are happy to mind their own business too.
Kailua-Kona itself is host to several world-renowned events, including the Ironman Triathlon in October, the International Billfishing Tournament in August. Humpback whale watching is a favorite activity from October through March. Madam Pele has been putting on quite a spectacular show at the Kilauea Volcano with active lava flows regularly visible. Big Island activities, in general, tend to be just that, active! Hiking, surfing, snorkeling, scubadiving, golfing, horseback riding, sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding & star gazing are just a few! We welcome your questions and truly enjoy sharing the unique qualities of our Island home.
Ilana, who grew up in D.C., and David, who grew up in Santa Barbara & Hawaii met in Santa Cruz in 1994. We moved to the Big Island together in 1998 and bought this property in 2000. David is a master finish carpenter and Ilana is a Doula, artist & Aromatherapist. We enjoy raising our two children and squeezing in fun things like surfing, camping, hiking, music & friends wherever we can.
Ilana Maxwell purchased this studio in 2000
We fell in love this the whole property because of its unique history and a certain calling we felt to it. The main house was originally built in 1908, an original Kona Coffee Shack, and the land was never bulldozed, leaving a large lava flow untouched in the backyard area. Pueo's Perch, the studio, was originally built as a sound studio by the owner's previous to us. David rebuilt it into what you now enjoy as Pueo's Perch. Holualoa is also a magical area. Ilana first visited the area at age 18 and made a mental note to return and settle. Nearly ten years later this home called us both into stewardship.
Pueo's Perch was a home away from home for my girlfriend and I for two weeks in December. Ilana and David are excellent hosts - very friendly, laid back and quick to take care of any issues or concerns which might arise.
A short drive up the hill from town, the Perch is ideally located. It is cool thanks to its elevation, yet it is just the right distance from major roads and highways. Its setting is idyllic - a quaint little home behind the main house, separated by a sheltered yard complete with pond, fruit trees, coffee plants and occasional wandering chickens and roosters pecking at the fallen fruit. The Perch itself is uniquely designed and tastefully decorated, with everything a person would need - wifi, cable TV, linens, bath towels, beach towels, etc, etc. The loft is cool, but after a few nights we opted for the sofa bed on the ground floor. With a washer and dryer essentially inside the unit, Pueo's Perch is a real gem!
Very cozy and we grateful for the fruit in the trees around this tiny house. In the pure spirit of Alhoa...thank you Ilana and Britannie.
Just chek the temperature of the fridg...
very good central emplacement on the Kona coast
This was our favourite place we stayed in Hawaii, it felt so much like home. Great location for going to the beach and exploring the kona shore. Loved the kitchen area to prepare meals and the deck to relax on. Also loved the loft bedroom. we didn't spend much time actually at the rental so therefore only met them once but seemed very friendly and helpful.
Pueo's Perch was a nice place to stay out of the heat and business of town. It's a short drive to beaches & restaurants, but worth it. The lanai is lovely, and sunsets are gorgeous (just walk across the street for an ocean view). Delicious avocados and oranges for fresh juice (juicer provided) growing in the garden around you were an amazing bonus, and Ilana is a most helpful and lovely host. She gave us great advice and help with our planning, and the family is very cool and friendly (while still giving guests privacy).
Hula Daddy coffee across the street has the best chocolate coffee beans & mac nuts on the island (and good coffee too).
It is a tiny little place, a little smaller than it seems in photos, my (6'3") husband bumped his head on the bathroom light. It would work for a family (though not small children), but not very well for two couples, since the bedroom is just an open loft, and the futon, when open, would take up the entire living room space. Obviously you need to be comfortable with crawling down a ladder if you have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. ;) This being Hawaii there were sugar ants and geckos around too. But it was comfortable and cozy, perfect for a couple, definitely a good place to stay and a good deal.
It's a very cute place up in the residential hill side area of Kaiula. The location makes a great base for doing most of the west side of the island. The lanai (porch, patio) is nice and a good place to hang out for a bit while winding down for the day. Lot's of lizards and geckos to be seen while enjoying that evening beverage.
The hosts are great and accomodating even when minor suprises occur. ;-) They also have a number of great tips for eateries.
The only con, it that the Perch is a bit tight for four people living out of luggage. However, we would like to come back again once our kids go off to college.
Genuine hospitality, not trying to be anything other than pure Aloha, the hosts, garden and building itself, have inviting charm and comfort.
Pueo's Perch is situated at the cool 1200ft elevation in the Historic Holualoa District. Kona Coffee is world renowned and we sit in the heart of its past, present & future. Local farms offer tours & tasting. Free tours are offered at Hula Daddy Coffee Farm 5 days a week just across the street from Pueo's Perch. Just 7 miles South in the village of Holualoa are local artist galleries, cafes, a general store & post office. A 10 minute drive down the hill will bring you to Kailua-Kona town itself or the main highway and points beyond. The Kona Coast is known for pristine snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving, golfing, fishing, dolphin & whale watching and other abundant leisure activities.
