PUEO'S PERCH~FROM $75 PER NIGHT

Holualoa Studio Rental Photos and Description

Cozy Studio with loft, large lanai & full kitchen in cool, convenient Holualoa

Our studio, Pueo's Perch, (named for the Hawaiian Owl) is located on the slopes of Hualalai on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are in the area known as Holualoa, which is considered Upcountry Kona & Kona coffee country. Pueo's Perch is at the 1200 ft elevation, so we enjoy cool mornings & evenings with a healthy dose of sunshine in between. We are located just 15 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from the coastal town of Kailua-Kona, 10 minutes from the Artists' Village of Holualoa and just 10 minutes from Costco. A number of wonderful beaches are also within this 10-15 minute drive time...access to all you wish to explore is simple.

Holualoa is a rural area with an old neighborhood feel. We are friendly with all our neighbors, human & animal alike. Our area is generally pretty quiet. There is some road noise during peak commuting hours, but Kona is a sleepy town, so that never lasts long.

This quaint studio sits apart from the main house on the back of our 10,000 sqft property, with its own parking and pathway. This is a loft studio with Koa and Bamboo flooring throughout and a large outdoor, covered lanai. Unique island artists touches give a nod to our gallery village nearby. Pueo's Perch comes turn-key furnished. A full kitchen allows you to prepare as many meals as you'd like. There is a full bathroom with tiled shower stall, as well as large closet to store your luggage. The hallway, bath and closet do have lower than normal ceiling heights. These areas are 6'7' in ceiling height.

The main sleeping area is a loft, requiring the climbing of built-in ladder. There is a full-size bed and room to stow your personal items in the loft** (see photos for configuration)** The main living area also features a couch that converts easily into a full-size futon. The living area is simply furnished with natural woods and local treasures. TV & DVD player & free WiFi. The front entry way is covered and screened and has a washer/dryer located here for your convenience. A large, covered lanai offers additional space to enjoy the fresh air, watch the birds & butterflies, listen to the fountain and perhaps do some stretching or napping.

This unit is perfect for one couple +, maximum 4 people. Okay for children, but please note that we do not claim child-proof. The overall square footage including the loft area & lanai is 500 sqft. This studio is not handicap accessible as it has stone steps to entry and ladder to sleeping loft.

Pueo's Perch shares the backyard with our main house, but, by all means feel free to meander and sniff a rose in bloom. We enjoy tinkering in the garden very much and as a result there is quite a variety of flowers, foliage & vegetables planted all around the yard. There is a small pond with plants, fish, and Cattaleya, our pet turtle. We welcome wishes always...look for the little pot with glittery glass to make your wish with. There are pets on the property, as well. Several cats deem us worthy to feed them and our dog, Alohi (the local Hawaiian Polar Bear) will sometimes take a stroll through the yard. They will all be as friendly as you'd like them to be, but are happy to mind their own business too.

Kailua-Kona itself is host to several world-renowned events, including the Ironman Triathlon in October, the International Billfishing Tournament in August. Humpback whale watching is a favorite activity from October through March. Big Island activities tend to be just that, active! Hiking, surfing, snorkeling, scubadiving, golfing, horseback riding, sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding & star gazing are just a few! We welcome your questions and truly enjoy sharing the unique qualities of our Island home.

Ilana, who grew up in D.C., and David, who grew up in Santa Barbara & Hawaii met in Santa Cruz in 1994. We moved to the Big Island together in 1998 and bought this property in 2000. David is a master finish carpenter and Ilana is an artist & Aromatherapist. We enjoy raising our two children 16 & 7 and squeezing in fun things like surfing, camping, hiking, music & friends wherever we can.

Ilana Maxwell purchased this studio in 2000

We fell in love this the whole property because of its unique history and a certain calling we felt to it. The main house was originally built in 1908, an original Kona Coffee Shack, and the land was never bulldozed, leaving a large lava flow untouched in the backyard area. Pueo's Perch, the studio, was originally built as a sound studio by the owner's previous to us. David rebuilt it into what you now enjoy as Pueo's Perch. Holualoa is also a magical area. Ilana first visited the area at age 18 and made a mental note to return and settle. Nearly ten years later this home called us both into stewardship.

Our goal with Pueo's Perch is to offer a homey nook from which our guests can integrate their adventures or just relax and enjoy the Island pace of life. NESTING GROUNDS

  • 5 of 5
A wonderful perch for the near end of our vacation. Ilana is completely hospitality oriented, while at the same time utterly respecting her guests privacy.
The 4 sleeper had everything we needed to come home to after visiting the many splendors this area has to offer. Great location for all points north and south, on the west coast. Lovely back yard. In season, organic avocados and oranges shared by generous hosts.
Pueo's Perch is a gem to us and we will stay here, all schedules allowing, in the future.
Mahalo and much Aloha, J&P

NICE AFFORDABLE PLACE TO STAY ON KONA SIDE

  • 4 of 5
Pueo's Perch was a cute, affordable place to stay on the Kona Side of the Big Island. We loved waking to the light and sounds of roosters, and dining on the lanai with the geckos. The property was filled with wonderful fruit trees and we enjoyed selecting and eating the fabulous fresh avocado.

The Holualoa area is fabulous for the cooler temperatures, lush surroundings, great art community and easy accessibility to so many areas.

REAL BIG ISLAND EXPERIENCE !

  • 5 of 5
We absolutely loved the place, awesome location just 4 miles above Kailua pier. The cottage has it all and it's perfect for a couple looking for peace and nature. Ilana is a great host and the property is beautiful and we loved to hear the story (lava flows, etc.). We will be back in March for sure, this is now my favorite place to stay in Kona !

AWESOME LITTLE RENTAL!!! WE GOT TO BRING OUR 2 DOGS!

  • 5 of 5
The renters are excellent! Their little ohana was very pleasant and comfortable, we got to take our two medium sized dogs for a modest refundable deposit, who loved staying in the covered lanai and looking out onto their green little garden. The DVD didn't take DVDs but all the more reason to go out for a movie instead! Complete with a full kitchen, you can save money--but the restaurants in town are also great! The location was great! Less than 10 minutes from Kona and less than a 20 minute drive from all our favorite beaches. Maklawaena beach was our favorite, but Kekaha Kai is definitely a must-go too!

A+++++++ Thank your for your gracious hospitality and welcoming rental!

HONEYMOONERS

  • 4 of 5
This was a great place to stay. It is exactly as it looks. Location is perfect, just up the mountain from the mainstream Kona coast. Stay nice and cool up there. The owner is wonderful and kind, she is very helpful and super laid back. The property is very private, felt like we were all alone, even though the cottage is on the corner of the property. The bed is a little broken down, after a couple of nights you really start to feel it. Its rural Hawaii, bugs and roosters are a real part!! But to is the fresh mangos and enormous avocados!! Enjoy and thank you!!

Owner's Response: It was wonderful to have you both. We are so glad you enjoyed so many aspects of your stay. Beds are tough, since everyone likes something different. However, we will be changing the bed upstairs in the next month or so.

Thank you so much for choosing Pueo's Perch and we hope to see you the next time the Big Island calls you.
