THE BARTON GRANARY

Crediton Barn Rental Photos and Description

Two large 5 bedroom holiday cottages on the farm, in the rural Heart of Devon

Situated close on the edge of the small hamlet of Poughill, in the heart of the tourist-free Mid-Devon countryside, the Barton is a small family run farm. Our land is grazed by a small herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle and a handful of friendly sheep along with chickens and one or two pigs. Home reared meat is usually available on the farm.

We offer a choice of two truly unique spacious cottages, The Barton Granary and Brimbles, both converted from Grade II Listed barns, comfortably furnished and well-equipped. We are able to offer the added attraction of a small indoor heated swimming pool which is available all year round, together with a small enclosed children's play area. We also have a wellie bank (in case you forget yours and wish to explore the farm) a selection of bicycles for the use of guests, a DVD library and selection of guide books and maps to borrow.

**Please note that regrettably we are unable to accept pets with the exception of assistance dogs**

Details for The Barton Granary 5 Bedrooms, Sleeps 10, 2 Bathrooms, 1 Half Bathrooms

This Grade II listed former Granary, is at the top of the farm with views towards the village and across fields from the fenced garden and private terrace. We have retained much of the original character of the building with the old horse engine, once used for moving grain, preserved as a striking feature in the sitting-room and we have preserved the original beams and stone walls throughout the property. The huge sitting room features a wood burner, open beamed ceiling incorporating a whole elm tree, large glass doors to the terrace and garden and access to the first floor gallery area where you can find toys, games and books. There is a large, well-equipped kitchen/diner with access to the terrace. There is also a twin bedroom on the ground floor, together with a shower room. There is a useful utility room with washing machine and a separate WC. On the first floor there are 2 double and 2 twin bedrooms with many original features, and a second family bathroom.
Suitability:
  • pets not allowed
  • children welcome
  • non smoking only

BARTON GRANARY, POUGHILL

  • 5 of 5
What a splendid find! We (me, husband and 4 year old) all totally relaxed and enjoyed our week long stay. We had a traditional week of English weather for June (cold, hot, sunny and rainy!) and we were able to find things to do whatever the weather.

The owners are very genuine and helpful. Our little boy enjoyed collecting eggs from the hen house. It was nice to see the animals on the farm (which is a spotless, clean farm with grass grazed animals - extremely well cared for) and this added to the relaxing atmosphere.

Everyone does something out of routine whilst on holiday, for us it was to have soft boiled eggs collected from the free range hens each morning and of course buttered soldiers. I recommend you try this. You will be hooked!

We stayed in the Granary - wow - what a splendid property this is. It is also equipped well above the norm. What is also nice is all the little extras which are included but not expected and these extras are quality products. I am now a convert and use the same products.

There is no scrimping here, it is clearly a work of love by the owners and their primary goal in this business is to make sure their guests are put first and are looked after.

Equally, the items you use (crockery, cooking pots and serving dishes etc) are so well thought out and nice to use. No green cups and saucers here that you often find in rental properties!

It is also very apparent that after each guest the whole bedding set is sent off for professional cleaning - the whole set, quilt the lot. Not just new covers put on. How do I know this? Well, the bedding was so comfortable and luxurious I had a sneaky look at a set put by in one of the spare bedrooms we were not using to see what the quilts were made of or where they came from so we could buy some and I spotted the cleaning tags!

What else struck me whilst there was other than the visitors book, there was no trace of previous guests - I think it is something of a skill to have a property that is booked out so much and yet maintain it to such a high standard that it doesn't show its busy use.

We were were not a large party and as such Anne and Philip offered a reduction on the rate for under occupancy. This they pointed out to us is on their website which I hadn't noticed when making the initial enquiry.

So the proof of the pudding is in the eating, would we pay a return visit - absolutely yes, any day of the week!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your lovely comments. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay at The Barton Granary and hope that we have the opportunity of welcoming you back again in the future.

We must be honest and say that we don't usually professionally launder all pillows and duvets between guests as often rapid changeovers don't permit this, but we do launder them whenever we have a suitable gap in bookings, usually 8 or 10 times a year.

FANTASTIC ACCOMMODATION IN A FANTASTIC LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
I recently stayed in the Granary as we had a wedding on one of the neighbouring villages. We arrive late on the Friday night and the drive from Kent had been extremely miserable due to the pouring rain but on entering the granary all the stress disappeared as we stared into the amazing sitting room and in the morning the sun was shining and I looked out of the bedroom window to an amazing view of the rolling hill and green fields. The Granary easily accommodated our party of 8 adults and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only thing that was a little off putting was the connecting doors from the twin rooms to the doubles. Thank you to Phil and Anne. The sponge cake on arrival was a nice touch.

Owner's Response: We're so glad that you enjoyed your brief stay with us and hope that we can welcome you back some time in the future.

The connecting doors between each twin bedroom and adjoining double bedroom are a requirement of the very strict fire and building regulations relating to fire exits from bedrooms in barn conversions. We do hope that this did not cause you and your party too much inconvience.

SHORT STAY IN JUNE

  • 5 of 5
I have just returned after a wonderful weekend at the Barton Granary. We had a fabulous time despite the weather and it was perfect for all of us (three couples and two children). We were able to keep the children entertained by playing with them in the fabulous play area or taking them for a swim in the lovely indoor pool. We were also able to take them for a great country walk in the beautiful surroundings when the rain stopped!!

The Granary is a stunning converted barn with an amazing kitchen and fabulous large living room and entertaining in the evening was a lot of fun!

I would recommend this property to any age groups as its perfect for young families, couples getaways, 'big birthdays' and for twenty somethings looking for a break from city life (as we were!)

Ann and Phil were very welcoming and we will definitely be returning in the future!

Thanks :)

BARTON GRANARY POUGHILL DEVON

  • 5 of 5
This is our third visit to the Granary and suffice to say we are falling more in love with the property every time we stay. The Granary is exactly the way we would build our ideal home and we'd probably build it in a location just like Poughill, it really is the most idyllic setting.

The Granary itself is truly sublime, it is the best equipped accomodation we have ever stayed in anywhere in the world, a real home from home. The accomodation is spotless and with 4 bedrooms its ideal for a family gathering or for catching up with friends.

The kitchen offers a huge dining table and a great rendezvous point for everyone to gather after a day in the beautiful Devon countryside to feast on local ciders and wines together with some of Anne's locally sourced beef, lamb or merguez sausages. Anne always ensures a welcome pack is on the table for her visitors, this time we had Easter cakes, hot cross buns, home made hot cross buns and a lovely bottle of Red wine. Anne also takes orders for meat, cider, apple juice etc... as well and these are waiting for any newly arriving guests. I particularly enjoyed the ciders !!!!

The main living room is huge but wonderfully homely, sunsets through the lounge across the fields remind me of a Tuscan sunset, truly superb. There is a woodburner for the cold nights and a TV with freeview if you really feel the need to turn the box on.

Downstairs there is also a great playroom for the children, a lovely shower room and a utility room. A stable door from the kitchen out to a seating area is perfect for taking any freshly prepared food or BBQ fayre to the sun trap area where a great Weber BBQ is situated, although the cows approaching the Granary when you start grilling the Burgers is a bit unsettling !!!!!

Upstairs are two double rooms and two twin rooms, each of the twins ajoins the double making them ideal for checking on little ones in the night. I love the tranquility at night, pitch black and only woken in the morning by Hefner the local cockerel and the chorus of other birds.

Around the working farm are a selection of animals including sheep, cows, and cats plus Anne and Phils dogs that do not wander around.

The boot room is great too with cots, playstations, DVDs and wellies to fit every foot size if you want a stomp through the fields.

Ajoining the larger property is the swimming pool which is great. The granary is one of the best places we have ever stayed, a big thumbs up and we'll be back SOON !!!!!!

NOVEMBER WEEKEND BREAK

  • 5 of 5
A group of 7 friends and I enjoyed a great short stay at The Granary during a weekend in November 2011.

The area is the perfect environment to unwind from a hectic working life and we were fortunate enough to have great weather, allowing us to go out walking through the countryside in t-shirts which was amazing given the time of year.

The Granary is superb. Cooking for 8 people was no problem given the top class kitchen facilities; one of the weekend's highlights was the topside joint, sourced from Anne & Phil's own herd of outdoor-reared Aberdeen Angus.

Other than eating we spent the weekend relaxing in the comfortable and spotless converted barn. We also managed to spend an afternoon in the picturesque and historic town of Dunster, around 45 minutes' drive away into Somerset - one of a number of destinations we could have chosen to visit.

Our only regret is that we didn't stay another night and we're hoping to get back again this year for slightly longer stay.

Thanks to A&P for everything.
