For those of us who live on the shores of Lake Martin, we see, feel, smell, taste and live the majesty of this beautiful lake. One only has to view its beauty and awesomeness from places like the Kowaliga bridge, the Smith Mountain Fire Tower, the lookout at the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail head, and Acapulco Rock to know what a treasure we have in this east-central part of Alabama. If you are a golfer, there is nothing more beautiful than the view from the course at Willow Point. If you are a fisherman, there is nothing more satisfying or peaceful than sitting quietly in a calm slough waiting on the big one to bite; or, if you are a skier or wake boarder, there is plenty of large open water on which to practice your skills. We are truly blessed! I recall that it was said in the 1950s and 1960s that Lake Martin was 99.9% pure and free of harmful chemicals. For many of us, Lake Martin is home, where we have raised families, earned livings, enjoyed the recreation that the lake provides and just enjoyed life. For these and many other reasons, we call Lake Martin a treasure.
In 2010, Governor Bob Riley signed an executive order designating Lake Martin “A Treasured Alabama Lake.” This designation simply put the stamp of approval on what we already knew. Lake Martin was the first Alabama Lake with this distinction. The TAL designation provides a level of protection for generations to come, but it does not unduly restrict development around the lake. It does require strong environmental considerations in the future.
