Beautiful Countryside:
Central Portugal is still a relatively undiscovered part of Portugal and is therefore best for the independant traveller who wishes to explore somewhere different and still part of the `Real Portugal`. There are winding rivers where you can fish or swim in the crystal clear waters, lakes for picnicing and swimming and in some places you can hire canoes and pedaloes. The mountains provide a spectacular backdrop to the beautiful views that you find around every corner.
Barril de Alva:
Barril de Alva is a small village on the Rio Alva. There are several cafes, a restaurant, minimarket and river beach less than 500ms from the house.
3kms away is Coja a small, ancient, market town with narrow cobbled streets. A Roman bridge spans the Rio Alva connecting the two sides of Coja where you will find everything you need including banks, shops and restaurants. There is a market on Saturdays.
12 kms away is the district town of Arganil with a larger selection of restaurants and shops etc. There is a district market here every Thursday morning. Throughout the summer there are various outside performances on a Friday and Saturday evening in the main square.
