Quick getaway the last week in August
We suddenly wound up with time for a last-minute getaway for five days during the last week in August, and Molly and Rick were extremely helpful in scheduling it on such short notice. We thoroughly enjoyed both the house and the beach access. The beach is, as another reviewer noted, about 30 seconds away. The kitchen and house had everything we needed - cookware, coffee fixings, extra paper products for kitchen and bathroom, laundry and dishwasher detergent, all those things you never expect to find at a beach house. :) I really appreciated that. The open kitchen with breakfast bar, and the living room, were especially comfortable, and we spent a lot of time there, just hanging out. We also particularly enjoyed the upper deck. It has an eastern exposure, so during hot afternoons, the sun is off the deck, and we had very comfortable shade. We liked the fact that the upstairs queen bedroom has an eastern exposure also, and if we chose (which we did) to leave the blinds up, we could wake to the sunrise. The kids' bedroom (the one with the option for 2 twins) has a western exposure, so the kids sleep in! We purchased the linens package, and I was ever so glad that we did. The towels were plush and ample, with more of everything supplied than we needed, and even designer sheets for the kids' beds. We also appreciated Molly and Rick's immediate, friendly accessibility when we had questions. The house is lovely and the decorations are too, and we enjoyed the total getaway. This was a relaxing and restorative vacation, and we would not hesitate to go back. Oh - lest I forget to mention: Richardson's Cafe, in Mathews, has the most awesome pork BBQ sandwich ever - it is huge, and we had a splendid lunch there. The Food Lion in Mathews will be your nearest grocery option, and it is very clean, with a good selection; I was very comfortable purchasing both produce and meats there. Don't forget the produce guy who parks on Main Street in Mathews with his truck; you pick what you want from the truck bed, then put your payment in through the passenger window. Also, be sure to visit the Mathews County Visitor Information Center. They have a wealth of information about the Middle Neck, not to mention some interesting pottery and art items, and near-irresistible baseball caps and aprons. I may have to return just purely to purchase both of the latter. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and we particularly valued the quietness and private nature of the neighborhood.
