Plaka is situated to the north east of Crete, 5 minutes by car from the town of Elounda, 15 minutes from Agios Nikolaos and about one hour from the capital's airport, Heraklion.
The region is full of historical interest and is in an area of outstanding beauty. The mountains and sea are never far away. The island of Spinalonga is 10 minutes by boat and the famous archealogical site of Knossos just over an hour away. Swimming at Plaka is on a large pebbled beach excellent for snorkelling. It is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers. Griffin vultures nest in the mountains overlooking Plaka.
There are many old Cretan villages in the mountains above Plaka and overlooking the north coast; there are unspoiled coves and roads with fantastic views and local cafeneons to take a break from the sightseeing.
For the young there are sandy beaches 5 minutes away in Elounda or further afield around Agios Nikolaos. Also water parks and a golf course are less than an hour away.
