About Matthew Isard

We are a family of 5, and love the outdoors. Skiing, boating, golf, fishing hunting you name it! This is a second home for us and we currently live in Spring Lake MI.

Matthew Isard purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Matthew Isard chose Charlevoix

We have both vacationed in northern MI as kids and have family in the surrounding area. Our intentions are to eventually retire on Lake Charlevoix and enjoy everything the area has to offer. But until then we want to share the opportunity with anyone else, to experience northern Michigan at its finest!

What makes this cottage unique

This home gives you the best of both worlds, the old style Northern Michigan cabin along with a quaint homely decorated 'A' frame.

2nd Year/Better than the first

  • 5 of 5
I don't know how it's possible to have more fun the second time around. we love it, love it, love it. We shared with our family. Brought our Bryant speedboat(24.5')parked it out front. Brother rented pontoon. Played beach badminton, ladder golf, speedminton, campfires, swam, lounged on the floating oasis(inflatable). We found it to be clean and comfortable. Used the laundry great asset. Was nice to meet you Matt. Look forward to next year!

We'll be back!

We'll be back!
  • 5 of 5
Just returned from a 7 night stay at this incredible cabin. Loved everything about it! A few highlights:

Beach: Incredible, and perfect for small kids. Water is high relative to recent norms (in 2014) but there was plenty of sandy beach, and we could easily wade out 200+ feet before the water eclipsed 4 feet deep. Beyond that, the water deepens quickly ... but it's perfect for small kids (which we had plenty of, with 1, 2, 3 and 5 year olds). Kids could play in the sand, and within 20 feet of shore without worry. Water was clear and 70 degrees plus (even after the horrible winter we just had). Even went swimming at night, and loved it! The view in the morning is incredible ... and morning swims are a must!

A-Frame / Cabin: The property consists of two separate buildings separated by a covered breezeway. The A-Frame was command central for our trip, with its open kitchen, island, and living room area, but the cabin could have easily served this purpose. We had four separate families on our trip, and at one point, 13 people staying ... we all had private space for ourselves, and we all slept comfortably. Buildings are in great shape, and offer a nice blend of rustic + modern conveniences. Stove, oven, microwaves, two refrigerators, dishwasher, front-loading washer/dryer (which we used extensively), multiple TVs, games, etc. You literally only need to bring clothes, and food, and you're good to go! The deck on the A-Frame is awesome ... great place to have coffee in the morning, and offers incredible views of the lake (photos don't do it justice).

Accommodations: Dishes, glassware, silverware, bedding, towels, washcloths, dish towels, cookie sheets, gas grill, fire pit, pillows, blankets, TVs, WIFI, XBox, games, furniture, beach chairs, deck chairs ... this place literally has everything you need.

People: The owner was a fantastic guy, offering help at every turn. Be sure to hook up with Bert for firewood (great deal!).

Overall: We will DEFINITELY be back ... this was our first rental through VRBO, so we were a bit nervous. Prior positive reviews convinced us this was a good move, and we didn't regret it a bit. When you pull in the driveway, and take in the incredible view, you'll be sold. When you wake up, and take in the view of Lake Charlevoix in the morning, drink some coffee on the deck, take a swim, then close the evening by a bonfire on the beach, you'll be sold as well.

Thank you Matt for the great memories for our family! Loved it

Beautiful cottage and sandy beach

  • 5 of 5
A wonderful, spacious cottage for a large family - grandparents, parents and grandchildren, 10 people in all. We found the place exactly as advertised and were pleased with the many pots, pans and refrigerator space. We like the extra beachtowels available and thought it one of the best vacation places we had ever been. Children and grandchildren enjoyed nearby windsurfing and paddle boarding and the farmers market in Boyne. We are definitely recommending this property to our friends.

Great Location and Beach

  • 5 of 5
Our family returned to Lake Charleviox after a twenty-five year absence. Upon arrival we found the place clean and well maintained. The owner had a new refrigerator delivered during the week and was very responsive during the process. The two cabins worked very well for our group of ten.

We would definitely rent again if we return to northern MI.

Some problems

  • 2 of 5
One week at this rental on the lake proved to include too much cleaning for us. There was an abundance of dead insects and dust in cupboards and dresser drawers. A shower of flies poured down when we opened the living room blinds. And there was no excuse for the dishes, flatware, pots and pans having encrusted food on them. One of the frying pans was put away with scrambled eggs still in it! Although this rental has a "no pet" policy, we found clumps of white fuzzy pet hair everywhere and a strong odor of eau de wet dog in the bedding of one bedroom. We spent the first day washing all of the dishware, dusting bugs and debris (screws, nails, hair, parts of toys etc.) out of drawers/cabinets and sweeping up dog hair.

On the positive side, our family reunion of nine enjoyed the nice beach and canoe (provided by the owner). The location is great, and we rented paddle boards from Summertime Rentals in Ironton.

It would have been nice to have the refrigerator in the cabin working with this large a crowd. The A frame frig was already partially filled with items from the owners so space was tight. The owner tried to get the frig repaired, but it was not done until after we left. He also let us know where the key to the shed was so we could turn on the hot water in the cabin.

Bottom line, this is a nice place if cleaned properly. It irritated us to have to prepay a hefty cleaning fee and then have to do most of the yucky cleaning ourselves. Don't be the first renters of the season!

PS: Although VRBO suggests paying by credit card or PayPal, this was not an option with this owner who accepted only checks.

Owner's Response: We apologized for any inconvenience, talked to the cleaning service and advised them of the issues. They responded to me after addressing the issues and didn't find the complaints to be quite to this magnitude (flies, pet hair/smell and dishes). We have 2 refrigerators (1 in cabin and 1 in A frame) The cabin fridge was brand new and was replaced the week later under warranty. We strive to give all of our renters a nice clean place with all the amenities need to enjoy their stay. As you can see with past review our place has been enjoyed by many and has always been clean. We do not accept any type of credit card due to the fees associated with it. This was explained to the renter prior to them renting the property.
