The Knotty Pony is located directly on the Joshua Tree National Park border. She's an easy 4 miles from the downtown eateries and exploring the park on foot means walking to the end of the driveway, The scenic drives begin at the formal park entrance (about 8 miles and ten minutes by car). Other nearby attractions include the 49 Palms Oasis and Indian Cove, great for hiking, rock climbing and scrambling.
Built in the seventies, The Knotty Pony is a big friendly chalet of a house with an open floor plan, original 18' beamed ceilings and tons of warm wood. Appointed with restored vintage modern, new, and custom furniture pieces, the decor is finished off with artisan objects: it all mixes into a vibe that we like to describe as rustic modern. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms comfortably accommodate up to six peeps. The master bedroom/bath suite is equipped with a king bed and tons of closet space, plus tub and shower in the bathroom. The two upstairs bedrooms respectively sport a queen bed and a daybed (the daybed can be configured into two twins or one queen): the upstairs bathroom also has a tub and shower.
Experience pristine hikes and park scenery without ever getting in the car...simply step outside the door and walk the 50 or so paces that will take you onto the critter trails that crisscross the nearby road less parkland. But back inside Knotty Pony, they're lots of diversions that await! Fujitsu mini-splits quietly and cleanly heat and cool each zone of the house for comfort regardless of season. Cable and internet TV provide visual entertainment in the mezzanine hang-out lounge and for audiophiles, the acoustics in this wood house are so perfect that we just had to install a turntable backed up with an eclectic sampling of vinyl. Lounge in the new, six person hot tub and look out onto the rocks of the park or the dark night skies. Books, board games, cookbooks, an assortment of basic spices, and good cookware and appliances (Jen Air oven, a dishwasher, electric 5 burner stove) speak to a range of interests. The generous 9' dining table is a great place to spread out and work on a project or enjoy a communal meal.
Because it it such a roomy property, it might be tempting to invite the gang out for a big bash and though we love a good party, please refrain from as we need to keep the property in A+ condition for guests seeking quality space and quiet enjoyment. Likewise, special arrangements are required for filming and photo shoots. So sorry, but we no longer allow pets.
Knotty Pony is perfect as a weekend retreat, but please inquire about longer stays as we happily slide the scale as the number of nights, weeks, or months increase!
As a set designer, I'm in love with the visual drama of the California high desert. I was so excited when I found my little spot in the Mojave....I couldn't wait to start working with the palette of homestead architecture, native plants, seasons, and vistas that Joshua Tree offers. My hope is that the resulting home reflects the unassuming laid-back lifestyle that I value but sometimes find difficult to enjoy in LA, while also reflecting a respect for nature, warmth, a bit of humor, and relaxation with the necessary flourishes (good art, good books, wi-fi and music!).
Miriam purchased this house in 2010
When I listed my first vacation home on VRBO six years ago, I had no idea that I would come in contact with so many wonderful people. As time passed my love for the area (and hosting) grew. When I stumbled on The Knotty Pony as a rambling diamond in the rough with her 2000 sq. ft of untouched original woodwork, FABULOUS park-adjacent location with big views and mature trees, there were only two things that I could do...sign on and pick up a hammer!
Being in a house on the border of a wilderness area is a powerful reminder of many things. I love this house for helping me to remember how many stars there are in a night dark sky, what the sound of quiet feels like, and how to gauge the passing of hours by the movement of light and color across a rock mountain outside the window.
The Knotty Pony, under Miriam's flawless supervision, is everything you could ever want in a desert getaway. The chalet is spacious yet cozy, beautifully staged with fantastic furniture and artwork, and filled with many places to sit and relax. The grounds are immaculate, diverse, and home to roadrunners, quail, birds, and more. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook a great meal with. The outdoor grill is perfect, the hot tub is kept in A+ condition, and the proximity to the park simply can't be beat. Clean linens, a phenomenal vinyl collection, a fireplace, books, movies, bountiful outdoor seating, utterly quiet surroundings, and more make this the perfect getaway destination in Joshua Tree. We had the most amazing time staying there and we know we'll be back again one day. After all, why would we go anywhere else when there's the Knotty Pony?
I can't even begin to describe how terrific this property and its owner, Miriam, are. I almost don't want to share it with anyone else!
From inquiring about the property to packing our bags on the last day, Miriam went above and beyond to get back to me quickly, offer advice on hikes in the area, and more! Countless times sent me detailed directions of hikes and things to do. She was extremely flexible on check in and check out times, and generally just a rock star property owner.
As for the house, all I can say is WOW. The place is even better than in the photos, which look pretty great already. When we arrived, it was in perfect condition, the hot tub was already hot, and the entire driveway was raked. The attention to detail with the decor was outstanding, with fun things to see at every turn. It really felt like someone's home that they care for as their own, rather than a hotel- like rental. Solar-powered lights come on at night and light up the whole outdoor space. It's right on the park border, and we took a beautiful, wildflower-filled hike right outside the front door. Kick back in one of the many seating areas, light up the BBQ and toast some s'mores on the fire pit, and watch the purple sunset on the mountains!
I will definitely be back here every time I go to Joshua Tree, I really can't recommend the Knotty Pony and Miriam more highly. By far and away the best rental experience I've had in any city.
I can't stop telling everyone about our stay at this house. Everything about it was perfect. The kids walked in before us and we hear them from the driveway screaming "this is awesome!!!" The house is a work of art. Tons of really cool paintings, pottery, sculptures and lighting. The kitchen is fully stocked. The seating outside overlooking the valley called to us for every meal. It would be sacrilege to eat inside with the beauty outside. The tree out front was full of bees but they never bothered us. It was amazing. Oh and my husband had a blast going though really great collection of record. Lastly, Mariam was such a great host. Very responsive and after staying at her house I feel like I know her. I have to assume she is a super cool lady! We will cherish the momories we made here for a lifetime.
We rented this home for ten days before our son redeployed. We had the most wonderful time together. The house is magical and so are the grounds. Miriam has done a magnificent job in her decorating! Pictures do not do it justice. We sang along with her extensive record collection and loved sitting outdoors day and night enjoying the peace and quiet. Take a short walk, and you are in the incredible boulders and tumbleweed of this desert area. At night, soak in the hot tub to unwind. Everything is provided and the home is very clean. You can't go wrong renting this property. Thank you for the sweet memories we made at your lovely home!
We had the good fortune of spending the past winter (4 months) at this property aka 'The Knotty Pony'. Miriam's home is a true desert retreat. It's a place to come and relax in comfort and privacy while unwinding from a hectic urban lifestyle, all the while enjoying the deserts climate, spectacular landscapes and the best nature has to offer. Now imagine.... it's all right out your back door! and you begin to get what a special place this is, Spent countless hours bouldering, hiking and exploring the fascinating terrain we found ourselves in. The trail system here is extensive both in and out of the Nat'l Park allowing for unlimited trekking/rock scrambling possibilities, dependant only on one's sense of adventure and physical prowess. Or you can just chill on any of the many different pieces of outdoor furniture so thoughtfully provided, as we did on several of the hotter days, and enjoy the views, the xeriscaped grounds or abundant wildlife about the property. The house itself is as described - big, open, roomy, comfortable and very well appointed with an eclectic/funky mix of furniture and 'objects d' arts' as well as a comfy entertainment centre on the media mezzanine. It's a great house to entertain people and We had several guests from around the US and Canada drop by who all were quickly enamoured by the look and feel of the place. The kitchen was outstanding with high end appliances and all the gadgets, dishware and supplies a cook needs to get started and then all served up at the big family table in the Great Room. The Hot Tub was an especially welcome treat after a long day 'playing' in the desert. But perhaps the most overlooked natural highlight here is the night sky - absolutely spectacular and a star gazers delight!
We had a truly great time here. It was everything we could have asked for in a winter vacation in the desert. Kudos to the owner and host, Miriam, for creating such wonderful place and space for her guests to enjoy and many thanks to her for the attentiveness shown us as her guests! All I can say to sum our experience is: "after an 8,000km drive from Eastern Canada we felt like we had discovered the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!" Thanks again Miriam.....
I came with my 2 kids (ages 4 and 7), my husband, his sister and her two kids (ages 12 and 14) and we all had a wonderful stay. There was plenty to do, all the kids had a blast playing outside. The kitchen was by far the best stocked I have ever stayed in (there was EVERYTHING you might need)--we cooked some yummy meals here. The house is just a quick ride into town and the park as well (stop by Crossroads Cafe for a great smoothie). I most enjoyed kicking back with a drink and listening to Johnny Cash on the record player! Can't wait to come back and stay again, the new hot tub looks inviting! Nothing like a soak under the stars after a long day hiking in the park!
