You will have to see this peaceful beautiful home to believe what good fortune may come your way! A spectacular 180 degree view overlooks the Kona coast from a lovely lanai, Kona Le'a Guest House is located in the quiet rural hills above Kailua-Kona, just minutes away from the ocean. Beautiful Hawaiiana decor sets a relax-and-enjoy mood. Set back far from the road on five acres of tropical greenery, chocolate and fruit trees--you will enjoy strolling around the property, picking fruit, taking pictures of flowers. Three bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. Perfect for couples traveling together or alone and ideal for families. Gourmet kitchen fully stocked for all your cooking needs. Office, lanai and dining room with a great view. Piano room. Everything you need (WiFi, Cable TV, IPOD connected stereo system, pantry with washer and dryer) and more is here for your stay. You will find it to be the perfect temperature at this elevation in the hills above Kona.
Des and Lisen were both born in Hawaii, Des' family first having arrived in the early 1800's. We have a coffee farm, Holualoa Kona Coffee Company, about a half a mile from this property where we grow, mill and roast coffee for many farmers in the Kona area. Free tours of our organic farm are offered. Des is a farmer at heart and also enjoys growing chocolate, breadfruit and tropical fruits which you will see surrounding Kona Le'a Guest House as well. In our free time we enjoy ocean swimming, stand up paddle boarding, surfing and hiking. We live in the center of the island in the small town of Waimea where our children go to school.
Lisen purchased this house in 1998
We love the privacy of living in the rural hills above all the action of Kona--but also enjoy being close to it. It's a perfect spot between two worlds. This elevation has a delightful temperature--never too hot or cold, just right. This home has a special feel to it--a feeling of old Hawaii with all the comforts you enjoy.
Huge old trees surrounding the house give a feeling of being in a tree house--tucked away in a tropical wonderland of flowers and fruit trees. A great feeling of privacy with a grand view of the Kona coast.
What an amazing home and property!! Absolutely one of the most comfortable and enjoyable homes I have ever stayed in. Thank you sooo...... much!
We just returned from eight very relaxing days at this beautiful home in a spectacular setting with sweeping ocean views. The kitchen is huge and well equipped and opens onto the lanai. The bedrooms are spacious with views from every window and the beds are very comfortable. The master has a walk-in closet and huge bathroom with a soaking tub and large shower. The decor throughout the home is lovely and feels very authentically Hawaiian. My husband and I enjoyed the home so much that we ended up eating most of our meals in instead of going out. We started our days with organic kona coffee from the owner's plantation and ended with fresh fruits and vegetables (some harvested on the property) and some from local farmers markets. The neighborhood that surrounds the property is peaceful and is filled with some very unique plant specimens. Overall, we enjoyed our stay so much that it was hard leaving and we are already planning a trip back!
We’re just back from our second stay at what we call the Kona big house. We obviously wouldn’t have booked it again if we hadn’t been totally satisfied with our first visit. Once again, we felt so lucky to have found this place. So we would just reiterate what we said in our first review: “It is a very spacious, clean, comfortable, well-equipped house, with a huge lanai (plus a smaller one). The views down to Kona-K. and the coast are spectacular, and we enjoyed walking around the sprawling gardens with various fruit trees (grapefruit, orange, tangerine, banana, papaya, and more). A great place to watch birds, too. We thought the location up on the slopes was wonderful, and the easy (10 minutes) access to the beach parks at the south end of Ali drive is a real plus. It is also a good launching place for trips to Kealakekua (home of Annie’s Burgers and other treats), Captain Cook and other points south.” Special thanks to Cindy for all her help, local knowledge, and advice, and to Lisen and Des for making their place available.
We were fortunate to spend 5 weeks this beautiful house. It's well laid out with a fantastic kitchen and has incredible views of the ocean from the lanai. We had another couple visiting for about 2 weeks of our stay and there was plenty of room for everyone. The huge orchards offer a lot of privacy and we spent many happy mornings wandering through the orchards with our young children. The owners of the house were great. They included lots of suggestions for places to explore in a binder in the house and when we contacted them with a few questions, they gave us even more ideas, including good beaches to take younger kids. The location is central much that the Big Island has to offer - Kalekekua Bay, great beaches, Volcanoes National Park and Mauna Kea Observatory. If we had the opportunity to stay in this amazing place, we would jump at it. We made many happy memories during our stay.
We were absolutely delighted with our 5-week stay at this house. It's in a fabulous retreat from all things tourist, has great views, beautiful grounds (including a huge diversity of tropical fruits that we enjoyed picking), and everything we needed for a terrific vacation. The kitchen is huge, the master suite terrific, and being on the lanai in the early morning was absolutely relaxing. The house is ideally set up for a family with kids, less so for multiple families traveling together. Only thing about the house that I would have changed was to install ceiling fans (there were none) as there's not too much breeze on the hillside. (or perhaps that is just the case in the summer?) At night it's pleasantly cooler up at the higher elevation. All in all, a very lovely stay and I was so delighted to make this house our Kona home.
Our family of 6 spent four wonderful nights in this large and gorgeous house. The ocean view from the spectacular covered deck is much, much better than we expected from the pictures. The home felt like a real home with nice decorative touches all over, and we loved the orchard on the property. We tasted lychee for the first time, had perfect grapefruit, and sampled the mango and other items. Even though the house sits on 5 acres and at 1000 feet elevation, it was still an easy 10 minute drive to civilization and anything you would want. I would recommend this house for everyone, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention one issue. The roosters in the area crow from 2:00 am on. It seemed like a bigger deal the first night for those of us used to the silence of an air-conditioned home. We laughed about it and slept better the last three nights, but the roosters start early in Hawaii. We'd rent this home again in a minute. It was the best of the three homes we rented in Hawaii and one of the best we have ever rented using VRBO.
Two grandparents, two parents, and two grandkids (total age range 1-65) loved this house for a few days in April. I would recommend it and hope to return. Some of my best memories of our vacation will be because of this house - an amazing lanai with a massive asian bed where our 1 year old was safe to crawl, a play house for our five year old, breakfasts on the lanai watching cruise ships or the night snorkeling, secret paths through the fruit trees, watching the lunar eclipse, and as I told Lisen the joy of trying to knock mangoes out of the tree in front. Loved Holualoa itself, the Holuakoa cafe was our farewell dinner and we loved touring the Holualoa Coffee Co. roastery.
No sign of Mssr. rooster.
This was my third time visiting the Kona side and I couldn't recommend a place more. The generosity of the owners to trust visitors with such a beautiful house, filled with such history and Hawaiiana, is inspiring.
Just south of the small artist town of Holualoa, perched on the mountain above Kailua-Kona is a perfect place to enjoy Hawaii at its best. You've got the ideal temperature here where you can quickly escape the heat and crowds of Kailua-Kona. The lovely town of Holualoa is just a little over a mile away for you to wander through and get a feel for this creative artist community. Here some of the finest coffee in the world is grown. Mamalahoa Highway is a historic scenic drive that winds you through Kona coffee farms and tropical plantings. Kailua-Kona and Keauhou are so close (10 minutes!) for all your beaches, groceries, dining and entertainment.
