BELIZE OCEANFRONT HOME IN THE HEART OF HOPKINS VILLAGE, ON THE OCEAN!

Hopkins House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedroom 2 Bathroom luxury home right on the Caribbean Sea

AmayanHeaven is an incredible ocean-front home in the beautiful small Garifuna fishing village of Hopkins - about 2 1/2 hours by car from the Belize City airport. Hopkins' proud traditions, sandy beaches, gently swaying coconut palms, and cool Caribbean breezes, will ensure an unforgettable vacation experience.

As English is the primary language spoken, you can fully enjoy the warmth and kindness of the local people, who are always welcoming and generous.

Construction of the 'The White House', as it is referred to locally, was completed in 2009. Appointed with rich mahogany cabinetry, cabbage-bark hardwood flooring throughout, stainless steel appliances in the gorgeous chef's kitchen, private king-sized beds, and authentic hardwood furniture, The White House is sure to cure you of any stresses of everyday life.

Paradise is sitting on the private front veranda looking out over the sea, or relaxing on the roof to catch the full effect of the sea breeze and take advantage of the higher vantage point for views of the village and even the Cayes a few miles out on the reef. The property abounds with producing banana and mango trees and yellow and green coconut trees soon to be ready to reap as well. Sit back and have a drink, enjoy the white sandy beach which flows into the sparkling blue ocean, or plunge head first into the adventures that surround you in this Caribbean paradise!

After a trip through Belize in 2001, riding the buses, sleeping in hostels and B&B's, we were immediately taken by the unparalleled beauty of the country and the the honest friendliness of the Belizean people - especially the locals we met while traveling through the village of Hopkins. It truly was an awe-inspiring experience that convinced us that this country was a place we wanted to be a part of.

Cameron Hackl purchased this house in 2008

The geographical diversity of Belize has to be seen to be believed. Full-on overgrown jungles, dry barren semi-arid areas, lagoons teeming with flora and fauna, white sand beaches, the largest network of underground caves in the world, and one of the top-ranked dive and snorkel reefs in the world. To have a home here, especially in one of the friendliest, most beautiful communities in the country, is a dream come true.

We had an absolutely amazing stay in hopkins at "AmayanHeaven"
Our son of 2 loved the amazing beach and ocean as his backyard for our stay and was pleased to see him playing so well with the other local children. The house was immaculate when we arrived and Avis (the caretaker) was always near to help us find anything we needed. The location of hopkins was ideal for access to both sea and jungle adventures ( we even arranged a fishing trip and were picked up from the beach in front of the house!! what a treat!! ) Definitely looking forward to our next visit to hopkins and will make sure we stay here whenever we visit.

It IS Heaven!

My wife and I, along with another couple, stayed in Amayanheaven for one week, from February 15th through the 22nd of 2014. I am hard-pressed to decide which was nicer, the location, or the house itself. They worked together perfectly. The house is beautiful; the descriptions and photos hardly do it justice. French doors open onto a huge tile veranda. The beach begins at the bottom step, then it's 10 yards to the sea. Both beds were very comfortable, as was all of the furniture. The place was spanking clean when we arrived, and there were easily accessible mops and brooms for keeping the inevitable sand at bay.

The owner was very considerate, staying in touch with us via email and promptly answering all questions we had. He obviously takes a great deal of pride in this little gem. And the property caretaker is literally a 5 minute walk away. Besides being really helpful and accessible, she was just a lovely person. We had great talks with her and appreciated the perspective of someone who is truly local.

Hopkins itself is a hoot. It is like going back in time, but with a tropical feel. We opted not to rent a car, and got around by foot and Woogie Buggy (little 2 person dune buggies that rent by the hour or day). This gave us a chance to soak up Hopkins and actually interact with the locals, as opposed to being cloistered in one of the resorts. If you are looking for nightlife and "action," Hopkins is not the place for you. But if you are looking to experience a truly unique culture, and some breathtaking nature, I can't imagine a better, more laid-back place. And did I mention that the ocean is 10 YARDS from the veranda?

If I had to come up with some things that need improvement, it would be the cooking situation. The appliances and layout of the kitchen are both great. But the cookware and cooking tools are a bit lacking, as is a good outdoor grill. There is one, but it looked pretty tired. We definitely would have cooked more and taken more advantage of the local meat and produce. What I could have done with a Weber 22 1/2" kettle grill! The Happy Supermarket was about 100 yards away, and though primitive by our standards, carries anything you REALLY need. We were daily visitors.

As for activities, I mostly came for the diving. There is a fantastic dive operation down the main road called Hopkins Underwater Adventures. And there were many options for other excursions all over the area.

We just loved it!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback Nick... glad to hear you all enjoyed your trip! It sounds like you got to really get a feel for the village, and the beauty and simplicity of the lifestyle was what drew us to it in the first place. We will be doing a thorough inventory of the houseware items during our upcoming visit and will definitely keep your suggestions in mind as we restock the kitchen! I hope you can find time to explore the rest of Belize in the future, it really is heaven!

To begin, let me say that when you walk into this home, it will take your breath away! It is even better than the photos on the website. It is new, very well maintained and all of the furniture, bedding, towels, kitchen appliances are top quality. The home is literally on the beach and you can take just a few steps to a dip in the warm ocean. The caretaker, was wonderful, she was always available and responsive when we needed anything. The home has a good layout that maximizes the view to the ocean from the kitchen, dining room, living room and master bedroom.
The information provided by the owner is extensive and very helpful and he is responsive to email questions.
We would highly recommend the home for a nice, relaxing visit with many good activities in and around Hopkins including visiting the Cockcomb reserve, trip to Placencia, nice restaurants, fishing, snorkeling, ... the list goes one!

We arrived Friday afternoon after driving from Belize city, which I highly recommend. The hummingbird hwy was amazing! I loved all the villages! We had our three small children with us and this house was perfect! We never once felt a lack of space and the lack of a TV was actually quite nice! We played games and enjoyed our family time. The mango tree out front was great! We would go out daily and get fresh fruit. We also went to bread and butter caye with Boo. That was amazing! They caught fresh lobster for us and we saw nurse sharks and barracuda right from shore! Also the kids learned to line fish. Our 5yr old son was in heaven! He caught a ton of fish which then we brought home and cooked for dinner! We also went to placencia one day which was great! The locals in Hopkins were wonderful! We made many great friends! Caitlin's bakery was a joy and Tina's is also a great place to eat! Thank you Cameron for such a wonderful week of memories! We are already trying to plan a trip back! The kids cried when we had to leave!

Great location!

We stayed at the house for two weeks and had a wonderful time. I am glad we took the suggestion of the owner and got a rental car so we were able to go out and see a lot of things in Belize. Hopkins is a great location and my husband loved that he could hear the waves. The house was pretty much as described and pictured. Not that we went there to watch tv but we were a little disappointed since the pictures showed a tv and someone else in a review talked about it that there was no tv there (and our understanding is that it was stolen), but we did have our laptop and somehow 4 of us managed to watch Netflix a couple evenings when we just wanted to relax. We arrived to a storm (the first two days) and I was amazed the power stayed on. The road was closed (flooded) our 2nd day so no one could get out of town, but the next day we were able to get out (it had rained and rained and rained) and a couple days later there were engineers out and men and equipment to make the road (the road into Hopkins is mostly dirt and rocks) much smoother and got all the water to be next to the road rather than in the road. Other than that there was a little rain here and there but it never lasted long and we were able to go out and do things. We were there for Lobsterfest so we went to nearby Plancencia twice for that. We also flew to San Pedro and spent a couple days and one night there - but found we really loved Hopkins much more as San Pedro is very touristy (glad we went but one day was plenty of time there). The people in Hopkins are very friendly - you have to walk around in the town to meet people. We were a little surprise how expensive everything was - it may be $1 US dollar to $2 Belize dollars, but I think everything was at least twice expensive. Overall we had a wonderful time and I would recommend this house to anyone who wants their own space (so much better than the resorts where you are segregated from the village, and the house is nicer than the resorts - though we did go and eat at them a few times).

Hopkins is a Garifuna village on the coast of the Stann Creek District in Belize. Hopkins is considered by some Belizeans to be the cultural center of the Garifuna population in Belize. The town hosts its own national holiday, Hopkins Day, and welcomes people for their celebration on Garifuna Independence Day as well, they do this with drum ceremonies that can last till early hours in the morning.

The village is separated into two parts; the Northside (Baila) and the Southside (False Sittee). Hopkins is surrounded by the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range inland, and the Caribbean Sea on its shore. The village was created in 1942 to replace the village of Newtown, which was devastated by a hurricane further up the coast.

Today Hopkins is a small but vibrant community of approximately 1,000 villagers. The people live mostly by farming and fishing, and more recently many have found work in the growing tourist industry. The residents are known for their friendliness and genuine hospitality, and welcome visitors to their village. Hopkins has a selection of gift shops, restaurants and small bars. Hopkins was recently voted 'The Friendliest Village in Belize' by Belize First Magazine.
