My first visit to Los Barriles was in 1979. I rented a motor home hooked up my 24’ Skipjack sportfisher and headed from Coronado, CA to points unknown with my my wife Terri, & 2 kids who were 4 & 2. We had no itinerary and 3 months to kill so off we went for an adventure that would change our lives forever.
First stop, Mulege 7.5 hours north of Los Barriles. Stayed for a week, fished, played, and had fun in Bahia Conception. Next stop Loreto area specificaly Puerto Escondido. Stayed 4 days and off we went (not impressed). Next stop La Paz gross, just a big city no charm.
Next stop Los Barriles. We looked at each other and said this is it. Heaven on earth! Found a camp spot right on the beach at the now famous Martin Verdugos Motel & Camping resort. We never moved another inch. We came back every year until 1992 when we were on our way down driving with our last load of building materials to finish our new home when a bus hit our utility trailer causing us to jackknife and roll over. The accident resulted in a spinal cord injury for me and just 3 stitches for my wife. Since then, as a Qudrapeligic, designer and builder, I have finished 12 luxury high-end homes including our newest casa and guest Villa, “VillaTranquillo”.
We welcome you to our “Little slice of heaven” and hope you find it as magical as we do!
In 2007 I started Los Cabos Adventures which is a sportfishing and whale watching charter corporation. We have designed and custom outfitted mexico's only completely wheelchair accessible sportfisher.
We now live in the main Villa from October through May. Spending the summer in the high sierras north of Truckee, CA.
My kids are now 33 and 35. We now have 4 grandchildren so the love of Los Barilles will continue through out our next generations.
Larry Cooper purchased this villa in 2006
When I could finally afford to invest in Los Barriles in 1989 I purchased the last 2 beach front lots in the Village of Los Barriles. I knew I wanted to be in town and not north of the 2 big Arroyos due to flooding during hurricane season. The properties up north were way cheaper for a reason, plus the beaches north were all rocks. We completed our first home in 1993 then sold it in 2004 because the house was huge and the kids and grandkids were busy with there lives and no one was coming down. So we designed the 'Guest Villa' just for us. Its all we needed. 3/4's to completion, both of our adult kids started whining about having to camp on the property in a trailer. So prior to completion, we quickly designed the main house and got it going as well. The whole project, including landscaping, was done in 18 months!
To us its not just a house or a home but a work of art.
Hope you feel the same.
We disigned this new Villa with our lifestyle in mind. We loved eating outdoors so we put the master suite on the water and the other bedrooms to the back so we would have room for a giant outdoor 'Palapa Great Room'. We stratigically placed it on the south side of the main Villa so as to be protected from the winter north winds. Now we can enjoy outdoor living all year round.
My wife and I, along with another couple stayed at Larry's place for 7 nights, and wish we could have stayed longer. Everything was clean and well maintained. The beds were very comfortable as well. A fully stocked kitchen with just about everything you may need. Though the house is setup for wheelchair access it does not take away for the charm and beauty of the home. Outside you'll find a fantastic patio with plenty of room for sunrise coffee to sunset margaritas. Also, 2 newer kayaks, 2 newer SUPs, I think 4 quads and… Josh. Josh was great! Anything you needed he was willing to help. I asked about the smaller tackle shop in town(I was looking for a Popper) instead he let me borrow 3 of his.
Now for the best part of our stay…Larry! What a great person!! You would do yourself good to meet this guy. He is a true inspiration to life itself. Loved his stories, and some, we laughed so hard we cried. He is a wealth of local information too. (even though we've been coming to the East Cape for years) Larry lives on property but we NEVER felt like we were getting our style cramped. Would we stay again? You bet. Even if we were just driving by, we'd stop in just to have a beer and chat with Larry. Thanks Larry.
We (2 couples) booked the main 2 bedroom rental unit for 4 nights and had a super solid fantastic time. We ended up adding a 5th night on at the end and going fishing on Larry's ponga, on which we caught a 230 lb thresher shark that made for a delicious dinner. You can walk to everything in town, Larry's has quads onsite for rent that we used too. There really isn't much more you could need that Larry (aka Larr Dog) doesn't already have on the premises. Sunset cocktail hours with our mango margaritas were dynamite too. Larry is around to help with anything you may need along the way, no problem.
Oh my! I can't say enough about what a great place this is to stay. Clean and spacious two bedroom that opens onto a large covered deck that is on the beach and protected from the wind (super important if you are visiting November to April). Walk down the stairs and you're in the sand! The host, Larry Cooper, shares stories, local tips, and drinks with his guests. Be really nice and he'll might take you fishing. We caught a 140b Marlin on Larry's boat. Enjoy
We had a wonderful time! Our two girls that are 13 and 15 had the most fun! They swam, paddle boarded with dolphins and we all road quads all over town. Larry and his helpers asked us each day if we needed anything and what we had planned. My youngest daughter and husband went fishing they saw dolphins, sea turtles and hooked a marlin. When the girls saw how much fun it was they said we can never come to Los Barriles again with out them.
This house is perfect - beach view with access to the water, full kitchen, two bedrooms each with a bathroom. The hospitality of the host/owner is superb. Willing to share the local flare with his guests. We had a great fishing trip on Mr. Larry's boat and enjoyed countless rides on the four wheelers. I highly reccomend Larry and his accomodations.
This VRBO is everything it says it is!!! My husband is paralyzed and uses a motorized wheelchair. He thought he would never be able to go to Mexico, but Larry's place changed all that! WE couldn't have been happier with the accessibility of the house. We spent a week here with our 19 year old twins and their friend. Not only did we enjoy this place/area, but the kids absolutely loved it as well. In fact when our son was asked how his spring break was his response was "Perfect!" and our daughter thanked us over and over again for this wonderful vacation. The kids enjoyed renting the quads for the day and exploring the waterfall area as well as the tide pools. We also rented Larry's boat and had the amazing experience of catching a Marlin, as well as seeing some whales, dolphins, seals, and manta rays. We thoroughly enjoyed all of the restaurants we went to which were all within walking distance. The food was incredible. Larry, Paco and Josh were very nice and helpful. The weather was perfect. We would definitely go back!
Not really known as a tourist destination, Los Barriles is more of a state of mind, the way you would think Mexico was back in the day. A friendly, family, Village type atmosphere. We do have our bars and nightclubs but most everything focuses around the amazingly beautiful Sea of Cortez and the incredible adventures it has to offer.
Big game fishing for giant Black, Blue and Striped Marlin, record breaking Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, Swordfish, Dorado, and the inshore giant Roosterfish. Fishing is year round but the best months are April-November leaving the winter months to the Windsurfers and Kiteboarders. All in all, Los Barriles and the Sea of Cortez is a year-round adventure playground.
Some must do’s:
Take a whale watching bay cruise to Bahia de Los Suenos (Bay of Dreams), or Ceralvo Island, for a picnic and snorkeling aboard the sport fishing yacht ‘En Caliente”
Charter the “En Caliente for an unforgettable sport fishing experience. Last November I caught a 555lb Black Marlin!
Use our ATV’s to explore distant beaches and tide-pools. Take our guided tours to painted caves, and waterfalls in the middle of the desert. “Truly amazing!
Surf fish, snorkel, swim, sunbathe, or just kick back on the beautiful white sand beach in front of the Villa.
