What a wonderful place in an excellent location. We loved our 3 nights in the "hill country", just outside the town of Waimea. Red 'Ohana is in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by green fields, mountain views, and with a lovely yard, including an avocado tree. And it lives up to it's name, with a predominance of red, but very tastefully done. Laura was so easy to work with, did everything to make our stay as perfect as possible, and was very thoughtful in the finishing touches on this wonderful place. Waimea is a pleasant town, with a great store, farmers markets, and selection of places to eat. We loved the access to hiking at Waipo and Pololu, and the easy access to Hapuna and other beaches. For a pleasant escape from the bustle of Kona or the mega-resorts of Waikoloa, Red 'Ohana offers charm, hospitality, and a perfect location for hiking, biking, and relaxing.
My husband and I spent five relaxing nights at the Red O'Hana. It is an exceptional property located on the "dry" side of Waimea. We used it as a base for morning hikes, followed by lunch at the Red O'Hana, then packed up for the quick 10 minute drive to the Kohala beaches.
The Red O'Hana is the perfect location for exploration of North Hawaii. Ask Laura for hiking tips--she has some good trails to recommend that provide varied levels of exertion, terrain and scenery.
We'd like to recommend the Brewhaus in Waimea for delicious, locally-sourced and inexpensive food. We enjoyed an "open-mike" night while we ate, which they hold three times a week. Also, Pau serves healthy, fresh food.
Actually, we felt like locals while staying here, and cooked three nights during our stay. I even needed a health clinic and found high quality, speedy (important, while vacationing!) care at the Waimea Kaiser -Permanente Clinic right down the road. :)
Charming, comfortable, clean,. cozy cottage. Very well equipped: beach gear, barbecue, washer & dryer, dinning porch. TV with Netflix. Great food markets nearby. Haupuna Beach Park 20 minutes away.
Having rented many VRBOs over the last few years, I have found that most people exaggerate their accommodations, In this case, Laura's place exceeded our expectations. The inside was extremely clean with everything looking new. Given the name, she has found an amazing number of red items for the decor - Imagine, a red microwave :)
We specifically wanted the Waimea area so that we would be close to hiking and the cooler air in the evening. It was perfect. Highly recommend.
This was our 3rd trip to the Big Island and we couldn't have been more thrilled with Red Ohana. It is a clean, quiet, incredibly comfortable and well-appointed house with plenty of room. The beds were so comfortable. The kitchen has everything you need. Laura, the manager, was so warm, responsive and helpful with any questions we had about activities in the area, restaurants, etc. This was a perfect, relaxing place to stay. We would definitely go back! So many nice memories of the sunny patio, the beautiful yard and perfect comfort and spirit of aloha we felt while staying there.
My husband has been living in a hotel in Oahu for the past two months while working on the island. I planned to fly there and spend a week at Thanksgiving with him and felt it would be a good idea to visit the Big Island and rent a house so it would be a change of scenery for him and a chance to get out of a hotel for a few days. I came across the Red Ohana and thought it looked very nice and was exactly what we were looking for. It did not disappoint! It is a lovely cottage, very tastefully furnished, and well-appointed with everything you could possibly need. Laura, the owner, is a lovely person who is extremely helpful. She booked a reservation for us at Merrimans for Thanksgiving dinner which, even though crowded, was absolutely delicious and had a lovely ambience. We loved the location and found Waimea to have everything we needed. We would definitely recommend this lovely cottage for anyone looking for a quiet little getaway with an old Hawaii feel.
