Photos and Description of the Saluda vacation house rental
4 1/2 bedroom, 5 bath vintage lake summit house and boat house

This is an original Lake Summit house with wormy-chestnut walls, modern bathrooms, well equipped kitchen, screen porch overlooking the lake, lovely stone terrace behind the house, a fabulous boat house with room for renter's own boat, use of owner's john boat and kayak, fabulous entertaining room above the boathouse.

Parking is either above or below the house. From above, you enter the large living room with beamed cathedral ceiling and fireplace. Through the two windows you look out onto the screened porch which overlooks the lake. To the right is the large kitchen which often becomes the central gathering place of the house. It shares the chimney with the living room and has had many a cozy fire. The kitchen is well equipped. We eat at the lazy susan table built by the original builder for the dining room which connects the porch and the kitchen.

Back to the front door, going left, is a hall. Off of the hall on the left is a large bedroom overlooking the terrace. It can accommodate a blow-up mattress which we provide. It has a bath with tub and a laundry chute. At the end of the hall is a bath with shower and a separate bedroom with a sink and two lovely windows overlooking the lake and the side garden. At the beginning of the hall on the right is the original master bedroom with an antique double bed and large bathroom with tub. This room opens onto the screen porch. (The screen porch is between this bedroom and the dining room).

From the front porch there are steps leading to the downstairs very large bedroom with Italian tile floors and two twin beds that can be set up as a king bed. There is plenty of space for a queen size blow up mattress which we also provide. There are two bathrooms, one with a claw-foot tub and a dressing table, the other with tub and shower. We converted the two closets into a tiny room for child size bunk beds that are very comfortable and have on occasion even been used by adults. The final room downstairs is a dedicated laundry room that receives clothes from above.

Continuing down the steps is a charming pathway of stones and steps to the South Lake Summit Road and across the road is the fabulous waterfront area. The waterfront consists of a large double boat house with great room above that has a large 'kitchen' with wooden counters and cabinets, a stove and ice-maker, toaster, blender, plastic dishes, a refrigerator. It is not a real kitchen because there is no plumbing on the lake but we have cooked many a meal here, either on the grill or on the stove. We just pack up our plastic dishes and take them to the house.

Part of this outdoor room is in the sun and part is shaded and there are two large tables for eating, rocking chairs and lots of space for gathering. There is even a place to jump from here into the lake. Back on the water there is a stone terrace with wooden steps leading into the water and a wooden dock with diving board. The children (and adults) spend the day jumping into the water, skiing, playing, sunning, face-painting, eating pop-scicles. The lake is safe. Our house is particularly well situated in a cove that is both protected from other boats but open to the fun of lake activity.

About Jamie Molony

This vintage Lake Summit house is owned by three sisters. Our parents bought this charming home from the original builders. We all live in Charleston, SC. We are Ashley Hall graduates, parents and grandparents, hold masters degrees, with careers in teaching, library science and clinical counseling. We grew up swimming and skiing on the lake and now our children and grandchildren adore their summer time on the lake. We are no longer able to spend the entire summer on the lake so have begun to share this special property with others.

Jamie Molony purchased this house in 1956
Why Jamie Molony chose Saluda

This special property is on the highly desirable Lake Summit where homes are passed down from generation to generation. It is a gentle, clean, refreshing mountain lake, built by Duke Power Company in the 1920s to power textile mills in Spartanburg, SC. It is the home of Camps Mondamin, Green Cove and Greystone. The Lake Summit kids become skilled skiers and the lake association allows renters to bring their own ski boat. Kayaking, and paddle boarding and sunfish sailing, biking, hiking, picnicking, horseshoes are all popular pastimes. Or if you want to leave the lake, Asheville with the famous Biltmore House is 30 minutes away, historic Hendersonville, Flat Rock and Saluda are even shorter rides and Sliding Rock in Pisgah National Forest (an hours drive) is an obligatory outing at least once a year.

What makes this house unique

This house was built by a Spartanburg lady loaded with personality. The latch doors, the spacious lazy susan, the old timey fireplace in the kitchen, the wormy chestnut walls are her special creations and appreciated by young and old. You will love watching a storm move in as you sit in the old wicker furniture on the cozy porch overlooking the lake. Or maybe you will choose to have your wine and cheese on the back terrace nestled in the trees and close to the outdoor grill where you can cook your supper and eat under the stars. Or you might eat at the dock with another grill, stove, refrigerator and ice maker. You can choose between an eight person handmade wooden table or the 6 person glass table, or use both. The design of this huge entertainment area allows for both covered shaded areas and uncovered sun exposures.

Notes: The major entertainment at this house is the waterfront. The Lake Summit Association allows renters to obtain a boating permit and to use the boat landing to launch boats. We have one space in our boathouse for a renter's regular size ski boat. We do not provide skis or life jackets. We do provide a kayak and a small boat with an outboard. You can rent paddleboards and other water toys nearby. On a sunny day everyone is in and out of the water all day long. We eat lunch in the upper room of the boat house where you can sun or get out of the sun. Some even jump into the lake from the upper level. There is a great 'kitchen' with counters and cabinets but no sink because of the lake. However, there is a refrigerator, a stove and an ice-maker, plus electric blender and toaster. There are many bikers and walkers who enjoy the 14 mile long lake road. You may want to bring your own bikes.
