The owner’s grandparents, a Waimea school principal and his wife, began creating this Puako haven in the 1950s, first camping out while painstakingly hand-clearing the lot of its kiawe grove and then building a one-room weekend get-away. Tutu (Hawaiian for “grandmother”) poured her love into planting and gardening, while her husband worked over the years on building the oceanfront rock wall, stone by stone. In time, two more rooms were added, the lanai enclosed, and an airy breezeway covered for a comfortable two-bedroom home with ocean views throughout. Typical of the beachfront homes that have made Puako so beloved, Puako Kai is ideal for two couples or a young family who appreciate a sense of place in a perfectly maintained Hawaiian-style beach house fronted by an extensive coral reef.

For many years Puako Kai was a central part of a cozy weekend community, where folks stopped their yard work around 4 o’clock, put the rice cooker on, fired up the charcoal grill, and gathered for cocktails or a fish fry while watching the sunset. On dark, low-tide nights, families quietly waded out carrying torches and nets to scoop up the sleeping fish, then returning to shore to “cook ‘em up quick” or salt them to grill the next day.

House Design

Thanks to generations of fastidious owners, Puako Kai is immaculate inside and out, lovingly landscaped bit by bit with mature coconut palms, plumeria, and royal Poinciana trees, colorful croton, “pua-be-still” and hibiscus. A simple floor plan of living/kitchen/dining area with a bedroom on either side provides comfort, privacy and ocean views from everywhere in the home. The décor has been thoughtfully enhanced with local art, including a Mary Koski print, carved-wood seashell containing collected shells, tropical wall hangings, screen, and shell and monkey-pod wood mobiles. The enclosed lanai adds living space for quiet reading or simple tea times, with a mini-bar and fridge to keep everyone hydrated and fed just a step from the outdoors.

Puako Kai makes intelligent use of its site, with a grassy backyard with lounge chairs for relaxing and a seaside stone overlook perfect for enjoying a cool glass of limeade while watching turtles, whales, and sunsets. A more recent trip to Japan inspired a redesign of the front yard, creating a pleasing open mosaic of hibiscus hedges punctuated by the existing fragrant and fruit-producing tiare gardenias, pikake, grapefruit, mango, beach plum, and lime trees.

Incredible Back Lanai overlooking the gorgeous Pacific!

Upon our arrival at Puako Kai, we could hardly contain our excitement to unpack the car before landing on the incredible back lanai overlooking the Pacific. The wine cork popped open.....and we spent the rest of the evening listening to the waves, watching a couple of turtles find their way up on the rocks for the evening and feeling like we had arrived in Heaven! We have spent a lot of vacations on various islands....and this spot was one of the best we had experienced. This became our most enjoyable spot for the ten days we spent in Puako Kai. The house is charming and has everything you could possible want. Although we did not use the beach chairs and coolers, we appreciated the fact that the owner had thoughtfully included them in the rental. Mary Fox from Two Papayas was a valulable asset. We had planned to hit the Hilo Farmer's Market the next day, but she steered us to the market in Waimea which was a HUGE hit! Go early on Saturday mornings hungry.....great breakfast options and produce that looks like it is artificial it is so perfect! There is a vendor selling incredible breads and pastries, some artists and craftspersons and it is all set next to a beautiful park. There is so much to do on the Big Island.....but be certain to set aside a couple of days to just soak up the peace and relaxation of sitting next to the ocean. Aloha!

Beautiful private location on the beach.

We had a lovely stay at this house. We were there 10 days. The house is right on the beach, which is mixed sand and lava. Sand beaches that reach the water are a few steps to the north and south. Little geckos were around, very cute and un-intrusive. The lanai was wonderful, it goes right up to the ocean, you can see the sunset and it was framed by palm trees. Breakfast on the lanai was equally beautiful. There are two barbecues, gas and charcoal. There are sweet plumeria and other flowers in the yards, two lawn chairs, a covered outdoor area and an outdoor shower. I loved the outdoor shower so much I didn't bother with the indoor one.

Its a short drive or a fairly long walk to the nearest restaurant or store - a vehicle is advisable.

The house is well laid out, well equipped, and there are laminated instructions wherever you need them.

Probably the only bad experience we had was the very first day when some bugs were still in the house; but Mary sent someone over to freshen the traps and that was the last of them for our entire ten day stay. It was two weeks after some flooding, so we think it was unusual for this house.

They sent us back our cleaning deposit, no problem whatsoever, and even emailed us to ask if we wanted the dresser change back or had meant to leave a tip (we did mean to leave it.) Very honest rental management!

Also Mary looked in on us the first day to check everything was ok. The owner's gifted a bottle of champagne and some local fruit. And we felt well taken care of.

The location is very quiet, and private.

Highly recommend this house.

Another delightful stay in Puako

This was our third -- or fourth or fifth -- Puako rental through 2Papayas LLC. And like our previous rentals with 2 Papayas, it was a great experience. The house is "old family Hawaii," just right for the Puako neighborhood. And as usual with a 2Papayas rental everything was very clean and in very good condition. We used just the larger bedroom -- the bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped, even a full size refrigerator with large top freezer compartment. The smaller raised deck at the top of the sea wall is the perfect place to watch the sunset. This is a nice rental home for a family if the two children are willing to share one queen size bed.

Loved Puako Kai!

My boyfriend and I had the opportunity to stay at Puako Kai for the month of November and loved every moment. Each morning we woke up, made coffee and headed straight for the lanai. Having amazing beachfront access is pretty priceless. The sunsets from the lanai are perfect - as demonstrated by the many Puako residents and visitors who visit the beach at sunset to enjoy the view. The home is very comfortable and the kitchen well stocked with all the cooking amenities we could have asked for.

The house is located toward the end of the road through Puako which makes for an easy walk to the nearby Fairmont Orchid for drinks or the petroglyph trail that's adjacent to the Fairmont property. Long sandy beaches at the Mauna Lani, Mauna Kea or Waikoloa resorts are an easy drive in either direction on the main road, or head to Hapuna public beach just down the road. It's a bit of a trek to Kona but only about 20 minutes to Waimea or 10 minutes to some great eating options at any of the resorts or Kawaihae down the road.

Robbie and her team at 2Papayas were fantastic to work with and very responsive to any questions that came up. The house is older than many in the neighborhood but very well maintained and clean. If anything, the house is improved by the many happy memories that have no doubt been created there.

A great place to stay

This is one of the "old Puako" homes that has been lovingly and meticulously maintained, and the feel of thoughtfulness and graciousness was pervasive. The home was nicely decorated, the grounds beautifully maintained, the kitchen exceptionally well-appointed, all was spotlessly clean, and the deck overlooking the ocean was great. When we arrived we felt more like welcomed friends than paying guests. Everything we could possibly have wanted was there, and the manager was readily available and very helpful. The pictures on VRBO don't really capture how attractive it is. We really loved that it was ocean front and we could just walk out the door to snorkel or walk along the beach and watch turtles, and every single evening we sat on the deck and watched the sunset. We had a wonderful time staying here and hope to do so again next year.

This home is located in Puako which is a small residential, dead-end street just three miles long. There are homes like Puako Kai, on the water, and homes across the two-lane street from the water. The only business in the neighborhood is a real estate office and a General Store. The area is quiet and laid back, the perfect to get away for rest and relaxation. Nearby are many good restaurants and a variety of beach and ocean activities.
