About Cathy Manning

We love the South Shore of Lake Superior because it's so laid back. Cathy grew up in Ashland and enjoys reconnecting with old friends. Jim and Cathy both love sharing their log home with old & new friends. Whether it's summer or winter sports, beachcombing or just relaxing, it's a real retreat.

Cathy Manning purchased this cabin in 1999

Why Cathy Manning chose Bayfield

The warmth of a massive stone fireplace and a beautifully crafted log home with plenty of space for friends and family. The South Shore is a peaceful area where one can participate in active sports, scenic boat trips or just enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

What makes this cabin unique

The screened in back porch looking towards the woods/river, our own nature trail along the 20 acres. Roasting marshmallows with the grandkids or an early morning cup of coffee on the front porch swing. And especially in fall and winter - an authentic Finish sauna for real relaxation! For those who love to cook the kitchen is fully equipped and inviting for guest participation. Fresh trout from Lake Superior can be purchased nearby or enjoyed at local restaurants.

Peaceful Retreat With All The Amenities

  • 5 of 5
This log home was larger than we expected & would be a great retreat for large families, group of women, etc! It is very open & has lots of natural light coming in. My husband & I enjoyed eating breakfast & dinner on the back screened porch which looked down into the beautiful woods every day we were there, we decided not to go out for dinner as we wanted to eat on the porch at the cabin! The 2 fireplaces are beautiful & the sauna is large & awesome! Cathy has lots of bed space, blankets, pillows, towels, etc. There is a large game table in the family room & a small 2 person game table upstairs that we used nightly to play games. If you like word games, Cathy has Scrabble, Bananagrams & Perquackery to name a few of her game choices. Cathy also has a fenced in dog kennel & large dog carrier (house) on her property & is willing to have pets upon approval. There is children's games & books in the loft; the stairways are open to the loft & downstairs so you might want to ask if there are gates to prevent very young children from falling down the stairs. I could have stayed much longer!! We also loved the porch swing as the sun comes up & to see the stars & moon at night; I really didn't have any bugs bother us on the front porch while we were out there either! There are several boat landings under 20 miles (Cornucopia is about 8 & a nice place to launch). We picked blueberries in Bayfield (the berries in this area are excellent & it is fun & easy to pick). The new "All Sister's Winery" in Bayfield was fun with good wines. Their wines are made from grapes, "Bayfield Winery's" wines are made from apples. Cathy's home is very clean & a great place to stay in the quieter Herbster area. We hope to return with friends to x-country ski & snowshoe! Thank-you Cathy for offering your beautiful log home for others to enjoy! Denise

Owner's Response: Thank you for posting a wonderful review! We try to anticipate what our guests might enjoy and offer lots of rainy day or evening games and puzzles for all ages including Dominoes and Scrabble. We recommend little ones be supervised at all times while in the loft and if they sleep up there, have one adult with them and to use our assortment of night lights. The Bark Bay boat launch is just a bit shorter distance as Cornucopia for boat launching. For canoeing and kayaking our guests who own their own boats have numerous options as well such as Meyers Beach and the Bark Bay Slough. Sea Kayak adventure tours can be booked in Cornucopia and there's a great general store, coffee shop and newly reopened bar/restaurant in "Corny." We also recommend Halvorson's Fishery for tasty smoked or fresh lake trout and whitefish. Do come back in winter!

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5
We had a family reunion of sorts and needed a place that would hold more of us than would work at a hotel. What a perfect spot this was! The photos don't do it justice, it's much lovelier. Very peaceful and welcoming. It was really nice to all be in the same place for a few days, getting to know each other again. A few of us used the sauna and had rave reviews about that too. We took a stroll down to the river, and even saw a porcupine in the yard one morning!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your favorable review. We agree, it's a perfect place for families and friends to reconnect with plenty of room and few distractions other than the occasional critters who roam the area.

Great Cabin! Easily the best I've ever stayed in!

Great Cabin! Easily the best I've ever stayed in!

My friends, family, and I have rented a number of cabins over the years in Wisconsin and Kentucky. This was our first visit to the Bayfield area (to see the ices caves) and we are already talking about setting up a second visit to come kayak! This cabin was immaculate and has SO much space- three floors of living space! The fire kept us cozy throughout the weekend. As others have mentioned, the owners offer a plethora of activities to keep everyone busy- games, puzzles, books, music, and toys (if there are kids). The sauna was a delight to us all. None of us had ever experienced a true Finnish sauna outside of what you can get at a gym. SO AWESOME! We especially enjoyed reading about the history and building of such saunas from the books the owners kept. Thank you!

Outstanding winter stay in this cozy log home with a wood burning stone fireplace and sauna.

  • 5 of 5
We came to explore the magnificent ice caves and were NOT disappointed. Three couples who have been lifelong friends chose this place to be our home base and loved it!!! The cabin is set back among beautiful pines, and along the Cranberry River. We snowshoed along the river and saw several signs of deer bedding down here. A pheasant walked up to greet us. We appreciated the amazing stone fireplace, which kept us cozy and warmed us when we returned from a day of exploring. The authentic wood fired sauna with great steam was used each night we were there. The cabin is stocked with anything you may need. We cooked all of our meals here. There are so many good books to read..and any game you would like to play. We spent our evenings gathering around the fireplace playing games, laughing and visiting. We were sad to go! We left with warm memories and many photos..do not miss the sea caves and be sure to ride the ice highway to Madeline Island. Highly recommend this place..we will be sharing this with our friends and would love to come back in another season.

Owner's Response: So glad our sauna got your stamp of approval! And great to know the ice road to Madeline Island is open this year. That's a great experience - driving out to Big Bay State Park for just a hike, or to snow shoe or Ski the XC trails on the island. About 85% of Lake Superior is frozen over this year which makes the ice road quite safe! It's marked with pine trees and a slow speed limit to ensure safety. And wildlife along the Cranberry is always a bonus. Thank you for your glowing review. We welcome return guests!

My dream home

  • 5 of 5
I did not want to leave, and can't wait to return! The cabin is beautiful. The kitchen is well-equipped, the firewood for two great fireplaces is plentiful, ja sauna löyly on parantavaa. The property is peaceful. It is situated in the forest with several deer and wild game birds in the area, and near to great skiing and beautiful "sea" caves on the lake shore. The owners are kind and full of great advice.

I can't recommend the place enough. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay. Where else can you pour water on the rocks when you sauna? I too, love the steam! And there's always much to do in the area. The Sea Caves are outstanding this year. NPR (radio) interviewed the park superintendent recently so friends as far away as Tampa were hearing about it.
