We love the South Shore of Lake Superior because it's so laid back. Cathy grew up in Ashland and enjoys reconnecting with old friends. Jim and Cathy both love sharing their log home with old & new friends. Whether it's summer or winter sports, beachcombing or just relaxing, it's a real retreat.
Cathy Manning purchased this cabin in 1999
The warmth of a massive stone fireplace and a beautifully crafted log home with plenty of space for friends and family. The South Shore is a peaceful area where one can participate in active sports, scenic boat trips or just enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
The screened in back porch looking towards the woods/river, our own nature trail along the 20 acres. Roasting marshmallows with the grandkids or an early morning cup of coffee on the front porch swing. And especially in fall and winter - an authentic Finish sauna for real relaxation! For those who love to cook the kitchen is fully equipped and inviting for guest participation. Fresh trout from Lake Superior can be purchased nearby or enjoyed at local restaurants.
This property was amazing and fit our group of 10 with room to spare. It was beautiful, rustic and charming. It also was ideally located for the ice caves, only 20 min away! I would highly recommend to big groups or small groups looking for an escape from the city!
Take a meticulously maintained cabin, a peaceful, secluded setting, throw in a Book Across the Bay for 8, and you have a perfect weekend. Cathy was a great host and made sure we had all the information we needed to spend a carefree weekend at her log home.
If you like to snow shoe, ski or just hang out and do a puzzle, this place is for you. We took awesome walks along the river and the scenery was too beautiful to describe. We'd like come back in the summer and take a longer walk in the woods and spend an afternoon on the huge screened porch.
By the way, there is an official Finnish sauna (sowna) in the backyard that is one of the coolest things, I have ever seen!
Overall, it was a great place for 8 friends to spend a quality weekend together. Thank you!
This was an excellent getaway for our small group of 4 women who used the cabin to quilt, it was perfect for us! We were able to spread out comfortably. The light was fantastic! Well stocked with blankets and pillows all the kitchen gadgets we could ever need. The sauna was lovely, we used it most nights. This cabin is easy to find yet it feels remote. We were able to tear ourselves away from projects and take an easy afternoon drive to Washburn and Bayfield (great quilt shop in Bayfield), then back to our cozy hideaway. We even had a few yoga sessions in the basement with the DVD. Each of us had our own sleeping area which felt luxurious, and then we were able to hang out together in the great room with our projects. I would highly recommend this venue for families, or like us, a group of women friends who want to hang out and sew (or whatever your passion may be). Thank you for a great experience!
Immaculately kept beautiful vacation get away. So clean I thought my mom had been there. Well-stocked with everything. Extra pillows! Tons of towels! Extra blankets! Crazy well-stocked kitchen. (Decent knives! Knife sharpener! TWO crock pots! Plenty of glassware! Pots galore! Pans! Peeler! Potato masher! you get the picture...everything we brought from our own kitchen because you can't expect it in a rental place was already there.) Quiet and private. Plenty of firewood for a chilly winter week. Sauna is awesome--stove is sturdy and fires like a dream, only a scamper from the main house. Puzzle-lover's dream with two good puzzle tables (beyond the dining table) and an ample supply of puzzles. Charming walk down to a little stream. Not too far to a grocery store, within an hour's drive of several great nordic ski options (Mt Ashwabay near Bayfield and After Hours to the south were favorites). With only one full bath, I'd hesitate to bring too big a group (1/2 bath is a shower, no toilet), but it was idyllic for the two of us.
It was relaxation the moment we entered. A beautiful log home, well kept, with all the amenities you could want. It was very clean and very comfortable. We came just to relax. We walked the bank along the river amongst the fall trees, enjoyed a cozy fired up wood sauna, and relaxed in front of the cozy fireplace. Thanks so much! We came back home feeling refreshed and ready to go again!
Authentic log home. Lots of space, comfortable, well appointed, well supplied, quiet, close to Lake Superior, lots of woodland and wildlife.
Chequamegon National Forest is 'out the back door.' Bring your ATV, Snowmobile, Mountain Bike, XC skis, snowshoes or hikig boots. Fly fish on the Cranberry or nearby Brule River. Dogsledding is popular in winter.
