About Ross and Nancy Kirkham

I guess I've been in love with the West for as long as I can remember. I grew up with stories of my Father's childhood on ranches in the Roaring Fork Valley of Western Colorado, before tractors came to that country. My Mother's Father was a book and record collector and had a wonderful collection of Western History and Art Literature.

In the last 36 years I've worked as a Ranch Hand, Range Rider, Horse Shoer, House Carpenter, Dude Wrangler, Hunting Guide and last but not least a Camp Cook. I've been doing pencil and pen drawings for most of that time. I've also, been playing guitar and writing songs for about 25 years now, which still surprises me?

My wife, Nancy and I live on the ranch, we raise hay, Skipper W Quarter Horses and Hell once in a while!

Come and see us! Ross

Relaxing weekend at the western slope

  • 5 of 5
My friend and I met up for a girl's weekend at the ranch, and it was absolutely perfect. The house was immaculate, with plenty of space and had everything we needed for cooking our own meals. We had a chance to explore the beautiful landscape during the day, and enjoy a star filled sky in the evenings. We would definitely come back here!

wedding accommodations for family

  • 5 of 5
I rented this home to accommodate family for the occasion of my wedding and could't have been more pleased! It is immaculate and feels welcoming and just like "home". I appreciate you! Nancy, and am sorry that I did not meet Ross. It was such a pleasure to meet you! and your delightful son. I loved the view of the changing autumn colors on the Grand Mesa. Thank You!

Must see to appreciate

  • 5 of 5
This place is great. The pictures don't do it justice, because pictures can't capture the view, the open space, the peacefulness and specialness of a ranch like this. It's an authentic horse ranch with an unbelievable, enormous valley view with Grand Mesa on the horizon. All this grandness is in front of you as you sit on the comfortable front porch of the house, and you also see it out the huge front windows inside the house. Every room in the house has fantastic views as well. Nancy is a down-to-earth sweetheart. She helped us get settled, then we had complete privacy. The home's rooms are large and comfortable, with a rustic theme. As for the outside, the horses came up from their enormous pasture to the fence across the driveway from the house. There were also 4 little ones, one only 2 months old who stayed close to momma, but was right in front of us as we stood at the fence to see them. They were so calm that we could pet them. It was precious and authentic Colorado. Even my dog slept well here. Another plus was that my elderly mom had a bathroom equipped with grab bars so she could easily maneuver. In a heartbeat without giving it a second thought, I'd stay here again and recommend it to anyone. It's funny because when I first read the description on-line, before coming here, I actually wondered if we'd be corralled outside to sit around the campfire and sing songs like in a movie. To the contrary, this is not a contrived Hollywood dude ranch. It's a real ranch. You experience however much or little of it that you want to. If the house was in a city, it would still be a great house to rent. The fact that it's on a horse ranch in a terrifically beautiful part of Western Colorado makes it that much more special. The ranch is a short jaunt out of Delta and very easy to find. I loved everything about it.

Peaceful, Scenic, Comfortable

  • 5 of 5
Ross & Nancy are gracious hosts. The house is clean and well-equipped. it's also filled with the most amazing handmade (by Ross) wood furniture. The two dogs couldn't be more friendly and we never heard them bark. Ross built us an outdoor fire, then entertained us with stories about Colorado and his guitar playing .... he's an accomplished player with several of his own songs.

This stay exceeded all our expectations and we'd gladly return for another visit. Thank you !!

A Summer Vacation with English Parents

  • 5 of 5
We arrived at the ranch halfway into our southern Colorado summer vacation with our English parents. There were 2 adults, 2 seniors, and 1 child. The hosts Nancy and Ross were patient, kind, attentive, and just wonderful people to be around. We were greeted each time we arrived back at the ranch house by the two resident dogs, Gracie and Badger. Badger became quite the playful companion for the child (6 years old). Everything was clean, cozy and in functional order. The house was decorated with furniture and art work which Ross himself made. He is truly a gifted man. We were even allowed to visit in the pasture, with supervision by Nancy, with the mares and their foals. The child was ecstatic to say the least, the parents were also. It was such a wonderful place and in a location which allowed for fairly easy access to many site seeing destinations. Not to mention we enjoyed hiking the "dobies" across the road but still part the ranches property. We enjoyed the evenings sitting on the porch watching the thunder/lightning storms as they came over Grand Mesa National Park. This allowed for some stunning photos. We have already and will continue to recommend this ranch to other people and plan on visiting again (most likely in the winter to see the difference from summertime). Thank you Nancy and Ross for making the end of our vacation a most restful and bountiful experience. We miss you two, Gracie, Badger, and the horses. Thank you ever so much.

Great Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5
Our experience at the ranch was very nice. Easy access to Delta for essentials and within an hour's drive of the wineries around Paonia, the Black Canyon and the Grand Mesa. Nancy was great - we arrived a lot later than we had hoped for, but she didn't mind at all and waited up for us. We arrived in the dark, and had a little trouble finding the entrance as a result. Seeing it in the day, it is really obvious where it is because it is the only house around. I would definitely recommend arriving when there is still a little light. When we woke up the next morning, our surroundings looked like a postcard. The house was spotless, and was perfect for our two families. There was lots of room for our kids to run around (ages 1, 1.5, and 3). We would have liked to stay longer!
