I have stayed in many houses up and down Malaekahana beach and I have to say this one tops them all! The location is perfect and the views are absolutely stunning. It sits right on the beach and is nestled in a secluded area away from street and beach traffic. We saw whales breeching right from our front porch which was situated up higher than the beach offering a great spot to look out, relax, eat meals, and read. It is so sweet and cozy and has a great vibe. The pictures do not do it justice it is way better than it looks. Kathy, the woman in charge of renting the house is truly fabulous. She was so sweet, attentive, and made us feel right at home. She was always available and went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The house was very clean and had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook our meals and feel at home. We highly recommend this house to rent for an enjoyable relaxing and magical vacation!
Stayed with family after staying at a bigger place for our wedding and loved the change of pace from busy Kailua Beach! Located down a dirt road and at the back of a huge open lot, you really feel like you're away from it all - you just want to stock up on supplies and not leave! (You are still close to food shopping nearby - La'ie is a "dry" town: no liquor is sold, try Tamura's in Hau'ula; in Kahuku, the "Superette" has convenience shopping and house-marinated meats for grilling.) Neighboring houses are pretty close on both sides, but no one was living/staying at either during our stay ... just saw some maintenance folks a few times. Location is also convenient for day trips to the North Shore.
Beautiful ocean view from its location on a bluff above "wild" Malaekahana Beach, just steps away from the wooded point of Malaekahana Recreation Area (former estate of Hawaiian Princess Abigail). FYI - The house might pose access issues for folks with mobility problems because of the full flight of stairs you need to climb to get from the parking area to the house entrance, and there's a pretty steep sandy path down to the beach. The house is "cottagey," with built-in shelves/cabinets, a nice little - but not too small - kitchen and dining room, central living area, 2 bedrooms with big beds (one ocean-side, one mountain-side), plus 1 bedroom with a full sized bed/trundle, and a full bath (both off the hallway between the big bedrooms). There is a 2nd utility bathroom on the ground floor off the garage/laundry area. It's fairly rocky/reefy in the water at that end of the beach, but you can find sandy patches to swim in and the water was crystal clear during our stay; also, it's a nice walk to the other end of the beach (where the campground is located), which is all sand and great for swimming.
Property manager was very businesslike from the start and is very concerned with making sure no extra people are staying at the place and that there aren't any "big parties" - she mentioned being burned by other groups in the past? Whatever the case, we never had to deal with her during our stay, treated the place with loving care, left it excellently clean (even did some beach cleanup), and got our security deposit back (after reminding her to send it lol).
We live in Honolulu, and after years of staying on the North Shore for these types of getaways, this property made us fall in love with Malaekahana and its slower, "country" feel. Can’t wait to go back.
What a lovely little hidden gem! Off a small unpaved private road and at the end of a grassy driveway sits a great little house right on the beach. Despite the impeding arrival of Hurricanes Iselle and Julio, our family decided to continue our vacation to Oahu and we are so glad we did.
This house was perfect. Sitting about 10 feet about a private beach, you felt like you were all alone on the beach. There are neighboring homes but we rarely saw anyone and never saw a single person while walking on the beach. Perfect! Great walking beach and our boys loved swimming in it. The sunrises were absolutely gorgeous!
The house comes fully stocked with beach towels, sand toys, a styrofoam cooler, 4 boogie boards, a sun umbrella and chairs for the beach. No need to bring anything but some sunscreen and food! Inside the house, it's perfect for families. Three bedrooms with fresh linens (2 rooms with TVs). The wifi and air conditioning was perfect. Kitchen fully stocked with dishes, cooking utensils, etc. BBQ overlooking the ocean and enjoy the local cuisine! There was one bathroom on the main floor and another accessed off the side yard. We hardly used the downstairs bathroom. The washer / dryer makes doing laundry easy and there is no need to pack tons of clothes. Great for families that appreciate laundry facilities.
This home is great for those that want a quiet getaway. It's not a busy town but there's a big supermarket and a few restaurants just 3-5 minutes down the road. It's a 5 minute drive to Turtle Bay (yes, we saw turtles!). The island is so small that it is quite easy to get everywhere! Try the ziplining at the nearby (1-2 minutes away) farm. Three hour trip and my boys loved it! Best ever!
Kathi was a great property manager! She made sure we had emergency supplies at the house because of the hurricanes. Luckily, we had less than 12 hours of rain and most of it was overnight. But we were prepared, if necessary. Kathi had great recommendations for some local sights to see.
This was our first time using VRBO to find a vacation rental. It was a very positive experience!
Kathi was so nice in checking us into the house. She helped us with any questions we had.
The house was clean and the beach was a few steps down a slope. We spent many days walking the beach in both directions. Even saw a sea lion on the beach the last day.
The kids enjoyed the polinesian cultural center. Ages 12 and 9
Pearl Harbor was awesome, get your tickets ahead of time.
There is so much wildlife scenery to look at. The shrimp trucks nearby we great to eat at. Loved all the shaved ice.
Thank you we enjoyed out stay!
My husband and I wanted to stay on the North Shore for a relaxing, just-the-two-of-us vacation, and this house was perfect for us! I would stay here again in a heartbeat!!
1. Location is fabulous!! The North Shore by Waimea Bay is super crowded, but in Laie there are much fewer people. That said, it is still conveniently located by a grocery store, a few restaurants (like Seven brothers burgers, so good!) and a superette for wine, beer and poke!
2. House, yard and beach are awesome! The house came with everything we needed, including all of the beach gear, even a boogie board! The back yard and porch were partially covered, so you could still sit outside even during the rain (which is did one night). also, the houses next door had guests, but the yard is shielded so you don't have to look at your neighbors. and the BEACH......amazing. No coral immediately in front of the house so you can swim, and you can walk for at least a mile in either direction and not hit a person. Super easy to run into the house for a drink or snack and come right back onto the beach.
3. The management: I must say I love Kathi, she was very helpful with instructions on how to reach the house (which was good, our GPS gave us different, longer directions) and helped prepare flashlights to make it easy to access keys and stairs (we arrived at 2am). She even let us have a late checkout (5pm) on our departure day to make up for the fact we had such a late arrival, which was very generous.
In short, we loved our stay and I will definitely stay here again the next time we come to Oahu.
We absolutely loved our stay at this secluded, cozy, spotlessly clean, beach house! Without question we would stay here again! We were 5 adults, 1 baby. Each morning, as we woke up, we'd migrate to the back deck, visit and soak in the beautiful view! In fact the one picture "memorializing" this vacation is us in deck chairs on the deck! The beds are comfortable, rooms are large. It is far better than the pictures! It is light and airy with windows everywhere! We loved the seclusion of this location. there are houses on either side, however no one was there so we were literally all by ourselves. Here are the details you ought to know: 1. There is a bird sanctuary across the water. At night birds roosted by and under the house. They'd start to make noise early each morning. We at first thought it was cats whining. One night my husband took a look around with a flash light and found the roosting birds. Then we paid attention and would watch them fly off as the sun rose. Even though this was an unexpected "novelty", we realize this is a part of living next to nature. It would by no means cause us choose another house next time. Maybe there is a season for the roosting and we happened to hit the season. 2. The 2nd bathroom is more of a "beach bathroom" and located on the lower level. Therefore we didn't use it much. It had a large dead cockroach on the floor the first time we went down there. So that kept the ladies upstairs. The men had no problem using this second bathroom. Our friends who were, renting another house about 5 min. away asked us if the birds would keep us from coming back. Absolutely not! We would return in a heartbeat!! In fact I think they'd choose this house next time too! It was that fantastic!
I recently stayed here (my tan is just starting to fade!) with my wife and two kids (15 and 12), and we had an awesome time! The house is indeed secluded and it was definitely the cleanest beach house we have ever rented! Plenty of space for everyone, and the back porch with the view of the ocean was spectacular! SOOOO nice to have a private little stretch of beach to jump around in the waves. The local beaches are beautiful, but really crowded. All we had to do was walk down a path right to what was basically an empty beach. Bring water shoes as there are a few rocks to deal with. The Foodland is literally 3 minutes away, so getting food for meals was super easy. The kitchen had just enough of everything to cook everything we needed. Charcoal BBQ was used daily as well! Laundry machine and dryer made things much easier as well. Beds were comfortable, and the house was well ventilated when the windows were open, making it comfortable even when it was 90 degrees. The photos do not do this house justice. In fact, we have some beautiful shots that we will send to Kathi. BTW, Kathi is the property manager who took care of everything we needed. She is super nice, and nothing was a problem for her. The house is kind of hard to find for the first time, so make sure to get very detailed directions from Kathi before you arrive. Suri just kind of stopped on the main road, and there is a private roadway you must take back to the house. There are plenty of activities to choose from within a 15 min drive, including the luau at the Polynesian Center, and we made the hour drive to K'aopolina to snorkel off of a catamaran which I also recommend! We were looking for a relaxing Hawaiian adventure away from the craziness of Waikiki, and that is exactly what we got! If one were to nitpick, there was a couple of soft spots on the front deck, and the stairs up to the main part of the house were a little shaky. Other than those very little details, it was PERFECT!! Thanks, Kathi, we'll definitely be back!!
Awesome ocean views from this private 3 bedroom 2 bath home nearby the Polynesian Cultural Center and Turtle Bay Resort and Golf. Located just across the street from Gunstock Ranch and horseback riding. Walk down to the beach and enjoy the panoramic views, long walks, swimming, snorkeling, all out your back door. Or, relax on the extra large deck with great views and soak up some sun, enjoy an evening sunset with a cocktail in hand, or a morning sunrise with a cup of coffee. Peaceful, quiet, serene, and private.
