Duncan House Rental Photos and Description

2+ bed, 1 bath with 360 degree Mountain/Ocean Views

The most private and breathtaking spot in the Cowichan Valley! This vacation getaway is the only building on a 40 acre property surrounded by beautiful Douglas Fir and Arbutus forest. Feel like you have truly gotten 'away from it all', but stay within a 15 min drive of Duncan and Lake Cowichan.

We offer a completely unique and eco-friendly rental as a welcome alternative to the usual options. Learn that the ultimate in 'eco-friendly' can also be beautiful, contemporary, and comfortable. This custom home was built with local, natural, and sustainable materials and is completely 'off-grid'. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to stay in a 'cob' home. Cob is a mixture of clay, sand, and straw - it's what the exterior walls are made of, and they hold up the roof without a single stick of wood! Of course, our home is highly engineered and code-approved - one of the very few of it's kind in North America! Whether you're looking for something eco-friendly, unique, private, or just beautiful with breathtaking views this home is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature.

Accommodations include two bedrooms with queen size beds, as well as a pull-out double/queen sofa bed. The beds have eco-foam mattresses, down duvets, and bamboo and organic cotton sheets. The bathroom includes a shower and separate water-closet. The contemporary kitchen has 13 ft ceilings and the most energy-efficient appliances on the market. The living room features a beautiful curved cob bench and rammed-earth open burning fireplace for warmth and atmosphere. All the home's finishes are made with natural materials, so those with sensitivities can breathe easy, and everyone can feel good about staying in a healthy place without harmful toxins.

For your outdoor enjoyment, there is a deck and patio table just outside the dining room's double doors, which can be opened up for one large indoor/outdoor eating area. There is also a bbq and fire pits, for when the season allows. Our property connects with Cowichan Valley Provincial Park and it's many hiking trails for endless exploration from the top of the Bluff to the River bottom.

About Tonya or Leon

We are both originally from the prairies, and moved to the west coast in 2004. We have busy lives and jobs in Victoria, but have spent all of our free time over the last 2 years building and finishing this eco-home!

Tonya or Leon purchased this house in 2010

Why Tonya or Leon chose Duncan

Over our last 8 years living on Vancouver Island, the Cowichan Valley has always been our favourite place to get away to; whether for a day of food and wine tours, or hiking and exploration, or just some relaxation in a beautiful setting. It encompasses everything that we love so much about the west coast and we have never tired of things to do and see in the area.

When we decided to build the most eco-friendly vacation home possible, we searched around the entire lower half of Vancouver Island to find the perfect spot. It had to be a spot with a lot of space and privacy and beautiful views to showcase the best of the valley, not a nearby sub-division or the possibility of one in the future. It was important for us to be able to offer guests an experience where they truly feel they have escaped everyday life. These things were not easy to find on an island like this which is such a popular place to live and visit (and rightly so!). When we found Stoltz Bluff, we knew it was just the right spot from the very beginning. We hope you visit and experience some of the same magic we have felt there.

What makes this house unique

This home is absolutely one of a kind. The two of us designed and built it ourselves, along with it's off-grid systems. The story of this home is a long and adventurous one! It has had it's trials and joys, and we are very happy to have made it through to the end. We have done an immense amount of learning and research over the last two years and are now excited to share that knowledge and our story with others. We hope to hear from you and will be happy to tell you more and answer your questions. Our website and blog tell the story of our building experience, so please visit it for even more information (may be 'under construction').

Family getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our young family stayed at Stoltz Bluff for 5 days in early August, and we can't say enough about our stay. The place is beautiful, clean, and well maintained. It looks exactly as pictured -- no surprises. The views are spectacular, and all the comforts were provided in this very private location. We found it both remarkable and eyeopening that the entire place is off-grid! Highly recommended.

Everything We Wanted

  • 5 of 5

We would highly recommend this getaway. It was accurately depicted in the photos, very clean, private and yet within minutes of all the activities we participated in. We had a great stay, enjoyed the hummingbirds too and a great night sky.

We will be back!

Beautiful Property!

  • 5 of 5

We had a larger group rent Stoltz Bluff Eco Retreat and we had a fantastic time. The property is exactly what we were looking for as it provides one with a true sense of being outdoors and all by themselves. The property enjoys some fantastic views and is strategically located just a couple minutes from the Cowichan River Provincial Park. We enjoyed an endless campfire outside with just ourselves and the stars!

The house provides a comfortable and well decorated home for up to 6 people (2 bedrooms each with a queen size bed- plus a very comfortable pull out couch for another 2 people). The kitchen is well equipped and open concept so the place provides plenty of room for even a large group to enjoy. We also had arranged with the owners to have several others camp outside in tents, as there are some great views to wake up to in the morning!

We really enjoyed our stay and I expect several of our group members will return soon!

Eco-Retreat Treat

  • 4 of 5

The listing description regarding the location was accurate and the listing photos accurately reflected the rental's appearance and amenities. The property was clean and well maintained. The owner, Tonya, was helpful in answering our questions, concerns and requests. The house is nicely decorated and the kitchen is well stocked with dishes, glassware, pots and pans and utensils. The chest fridge was new and different for us. Great gas stove and BBQ. The well water tasted mighty fine! Living off the grid felt normal except for the lighting which seemed dull even with five light bulbs glowing. (Found reading or playing games in that light difficult.) Perhaps a different type of bulb would improve the brightness. The view was outstanding. The retreat offers an eco-retreat treat, peace and quiet and time for reflection or great conversation. The Cowichan River nearby offers tubing rentals and lots of fun. The area offers lots of hiking paths for all different levels. Check in at the Lake Cowichan Visitors Office for more information. We highly recommend dinner at The Masthead in Cowichan Bay (about 40 minutes away including time to descend the 1 km driveway and gate unlocking, opening and closing, relocking). Many restaurants in the area are closed Sunday and (holiday) Mondays even in high tourist season. Overall, a relaxing, enjoyable experience!

Off Grid Get-Away

  • 4 of 5

If you're looking for a (very) private get-away on a hill top where you can view the rising and setting suns, and a million stars at night, then Stoltz Bluff is a must do. The house combines state of the art eco-friendly technology and design with traditional cobb building techniques in a stylistic design which lends to the off-grid luxury. It was a great place to leave the busy world behind and spend quality time winding down. If you're adventurous Stoltz Bluff is conveniently located with rivers, lakes and hiking nearby. It is also close to both Duncan and Lake Cowichan for shopping and supplies, if needed. A great way to go off grid!

What a setting!

  • 5 of 5

Just back from a couple of days at the Stoltz Bluff Eco-Retreat. Sitting atop of 40 acres, high above the Cowichan Valley, this spot is magical. 360 degree view! The cob house has high end finishing, a great kitchen and living area. The beds are good. Felt like an education in off the grid living as I had always imagined off the grid to equal "funky hippy" (not that there's anything wrong with funky hippy.......) whereas this was upscale 'cool'. Who knew?! The Cowichan river is about five minutes away by car and in the summer great swimming. I did bike down to it (once, it's all downhill-great....but coming back............less great!). Pretty outstanding in all regards. I'd go again in a heart beat.

The Cowichan Valley is the 'bread basket' of Vancouver Island! It offers a bounty of farms, markets, and wineries to visit, along with delicious local, organic offerings at many restaurants. Cowichan Bay has the distinction of being officially designated as North America’s first Cittaslow Community.

Along with it's food and wine offerings, the Cowichan Valley is home to the type of spectacular views and outdoor activities the west coast is known for. Hike around Stoltz Bluff and enjoy a 360 degree view of the entire valley. A paradise for bird watchers, hikers, and all those who enjoy wildlife and outdoor activities (including just relaxing at the river, lake, or ocean!).
