Machiko Heyde purchased this cottage in 1988
When we moved to Maui over 30 years ago, we immediately fell in love with the Upcountry area more than any other parts of Maui. We purchased this property because of the desirable location and setting. The main house and the guest cottage are perfectly separated from each other, so our guests have their own privacy. We fully renovated and furnished the cottage for our guests travelers. Thanks to our many returning guests, we have been comfortably busy over the past 20 years.
This is a perfect location to explore the entire island of Maui. Having its own private driveway, hidden from the public road and the forest on one side of the property creates a unique, hidden hideaway to relax. Quiet, yet very convenient to stores & restaurants. But when you just want to let go of Maui's splendor and relax for the day, this cottage on this property is ideal. A collection of books, DVDs & CDs are also provided to keep you company.
Can't say enough good about this place. It was much better than I expected. Very clean and perfect for those looking for a quiet place to stay.
This little cottage is a perfect peaceful get away on Maui. The location allows for easy access to West and South Maui with a short drive. Access roads to start of Hana Road and Haleakala is 15 minute drive. Wakamao is a 5 minute drive with shopping, restaurants and a massage school with $30 massages! The cottage was comfortable and well-equipped. We ate most our meals in, and the kitchen had everything we needed. Machiko has fresh flowers from her garden set through out, there are decks from the living room and bathroom. Bill and Machiko were wonderful hosts and full of good information on the local sights. There are many, many books in the cottage about Maui and Hawaii-birds, vegetation, history, local stories, sights to see..we loved reading to get acquainted with Maui. We could see Haleakala from the kitchen window, so we checked the mountain everyday for clouds or sunshine! We were sad to leave and will go back. Thanks Bill ad Machiko !
We loved staying at this cottage. Bill and Machiko were gracious hosts and they did everything to make our stay comfortable and pleasant. The cottage is in a perfect location, and the nearby town of Makawao is fun, friendly, and offers many lovely shops and some great restaurants. We will definitely stay here on another visit to Maui.
From the initial booking to our last day, our experience at Pilialoha Cottage was amazing! I first encountered Bill on the phone and I was impressed with his friendliness and aloha spirit. And then through the thoughtful and informative email correspondences with his wife, Machiko, to complete the booking, I just knew that this was going to be a great place to stay....and I was right! Their cottage is VERY clean and I loved the simple touches of the fresh cut flowers throughout the house (taken from their beautiful yard) and delicious homemade bread. Machiko knew we were going to explore the east side of the island so she took time to point out important areas on a map in addition to providing tons of books and maps for our convenience. They had coolers, beach gear and they even had sweatshirts for any trips to Haleakala. They provided us with plenty of privacy but I knew they were an email or call away if I needed them. Our Maui vacation was magical and I highly recommend staying at Pilialoha Cottage. Bill and Machiko are special people and my husband and I would definitely book with them again. Until next time...Mahalo!
We really enjoyed our stay here. The owners gave us plenty of privacy, and were very helpful. It was super quiet and peaceful. Very clean! I would stay here again. Highly recommend.
My family thoroughly enjoyed staying at this cottage. The property is so serene, quiet and private. Our son loved running around the big grassy yard. My wife and I enjoyed the garden full of orchids and roses. Inside the cottage was very neat and clean. Plenty of room for the three of us. The cottage is stocked with everything we needed and more.
Perhaps the best part of this listing is the owner's meticulous details put into the cottage. Since I told them our son is only 1 year old, they had a crib and highchair out for us. Not to mention bath toys, baby shampoo, and stuffed animals. Like others have mentioned, the homemade bread was ono (delicious)! They made us feel very welcomed. We'll be going back there next time we go to Maui.
Convenient to visit Haleakala National Park and the scenic day trip to Hana. Some of the other Upcountry attractions include art galleries in Makawao and Paia, hiking trails, ziplines, Surfing Goat Dairy, Botanical gardens, Lavender Farm, downhill bicycling, winery, paragliding and eco-farm tours.
