Photos and Description of the Kalloni vacation villa rental 6 bedroom house overlooking its own wooded valley with a charming beach below.

A beautiful villa that combines comfort with elegance and makes the most of its location: set into the side of a hill with a path through its own wooded gardens running down to a pretty pebble beach below. The 3 and a half acre (14 hectare) plot is extremely rare because it was planted forty years ago with every local species of plant imaginable. There are olives galore, a lemon grove, orange, fig, pomegranate, grapes and the full range of wild herbs. Feel free to help yourself! In the spring the wildflowers are breathtaking, we even have some rare orchids. From the house at the top of this valley there is no better view in the Peloponnese. Even the sun sets in precisely the right spot. The bay is perfect for both children and strong swimmers and, apart from August, you may well have the whole beach to yourselves. The building of Villa Artemis is told entertainingly in the best-selling book 'Blue Skies and Black Olives' by the broadcaster John Humphrys and his son Christopher.

There is no better base from which to explore the glorious heritage of the Peloponnese. Some of Greece's finest archaeological sites - including the ancient theater of Epidavros - are a short drive away. In the summer months you can even attend a concert there. The charming island of Poros with its busy harbour, winding cobbled streets and sandy beaches is also very close. The Methana peninsula is just across the bay. Here you can find some of the best (and cheapest!) fish tavernas in Greece along with magnificent mountain hiking. Methana is as unspoilt as it gets. For a more cosmopolitan feel try Nafplion with its rich history, superb castle and sophisticated cafes and shops. The islands of Aegina, Hydra and Spetses are all close enough for a day trip. This is the Greece of small towns and villages, glorious bays and beaches, wooded mountains and valley. There is a sense of timelessness here. This is the real Greece.

  • All bathrooms (except for separate WC) are fully tiled in local marble. Bathroom 5, on the Lower Ground floor, is enormous and also has a washing machine.

  • The bunk beds in bedroom 4 are full size, suitable for adults. The sofa bed is in the Lower Ground floor living room and is a double. We have tried to make this house as environmentally friendly as possible. There is rain water collection, solar and an eco-fireplace. Because of this we don't use air-conditioning. The bedrooms on the Upper level have ceiling fans and floor standing fans are available for the Lower Ground bedrooms. All windows have mosquito screens and shutters.

Notes: The house is on 3 levels: Upper (1st floor), Ground and Lower Ground. The Upper and Ground levels are connected by a staircase. The Lower Ground is a self-contained apartment with its own access, large kitchen, living room etc. It is perfectly light and is nice and cool in the summer. Bedrooms 1-4 are on the Upper level. The 3 doubles are all en-suite with private balconies. Bedrooms 5 and 6 are on the Lower Ground. One is en-suite, the other is opposite the big bathroom. A big table on one of the Ground level balconies seats 10 adults. There is a children's table as well. The villa was used last summer (2009) for the first time and was full of children of all ages. However, care must be taken around the swimming pool as there are no guard rails. The elderly or infirm may find the path down to the beach a bit steep but there is road access via the village. A cot and high chair are available for babies. There is no satellite TV but there are English language DVDs for adults and kids.

Christopher, the owners' son, is British but lives in Greece. Although based in Athens, he often stays in the small cottage at the bottom of the property. He is happy to give advice on the local area, point out the best places to eat and generally make sure that your holiday is as enjoyable as possible. A fluent Greek speaker, he is always available on the phone to deal with any problems or questions. Summer Half Term in Greece

We are a family of 4 (2 girls aged 11 and 8) and had a truly wonderful week in this villa. The house is spacious and very comfortable with incredible views and an almost private pebble beach with clear blue sea just 2 minutes walk down through the garden. The area feels unspoiled and not at all overrun. There are many places, ruins, beaches, volcanoes, restaurants etc to visit - too many for one week. We spent quite a few days staying at the villa, doing very little other than swimming, eating and reading. It was the first holiday, in a long time, after which we all felt fully refreshed. I would highly recommend this villa - it's great!
