I am an artist so Blessed to live and work in this paradise forest in between Big Sur and Carmel. I'm inspired by the reality that each of us are nature and not separate from it. This is the basis of my work. People often ask me what kind of art I make and my response is that 'Life is the Art'! I work in many mediums including painting, redwood carvings, mixed media and of course the Essence Portraits I create for people have been a profound exploration into the hologram of time and space of a person's soul. I love the discovery of art as a medium for the universe of knowledge to come through the paintings and sculpture. I enjoy welcoming people from all over the world into my gallery & studio here on the 'Jewel in the Forest' property. We also have a small area I call 'Carabella's Theatre' where we hold seasonal gatherings, weddings, workshops etc. ?Feel free to check out my website or Sofanya on Facebook.
Sofanya White purchased this cottage in 1996
I remember the day I was drawn here....it was as if everyone I encountered had a message for me. Since the moment I got here I've felt it to be my true home. I used to drive thru Big Sur on my way to LA on art business and this time I visited a shop that was carrying my wearable art at the time and the clerk in there said 'Sofanya you should check this place out....it's perfect for you!' I called to make an appt to see the house the next morning. The moment I turned onto this road to my house I recognized it as the place I belonged on the planet. When I drove into the driveway to the dome house my gaze was filled with a beautiful robust young woman with long golden hair nursing her baby who was proportionally as large and gorgeous as she....it was like a bigger than life vision of nurturing and reminded me of a Rubens painting. She showed me upstairs to the dome house. When I entered I had a strong sense that I had made it home! I rented for a year and a half knowing that someday I must buy this property so that I would never have to leave. Miracles took place so that I could manifest that dream and here I am almost 17 yrs later. In that time we've had a theatre in the round in the lower dome level, art shows, concerts, workshops, community gatherings. Over time I found out that long before the dome was built the property was called 'Hoffman's Camp' owned by Carabel & Lou Hoffman. They used to have Sunday dinners for the guests cooked by Carabel...people loved staying here and couldn't wait to come back. I have photos from that era and now I once again bring to life the long history of welcoming new friends to this beautiful magical place on earth.
Peace in beautiful nature while being less than 20 minutes to countless fun activities in Carmel, Big Sur, Monterey, Pacific Grove and on and on! Enjoy expressing yourself through painting, sculpture, poetry and music. I provide the materials and beauty of nature in which to express your Self if you so choose...
*You might want to pick up some groceries on the way over because we’re about 20 min from any shopping. Carmel or Monterey is good for picking up supplies on the way. There is a Safeway on Rio Rd in Carmel and this is the closest grocery store from the North. If you’re coming up Hwy 1 from the South you can stop in Big Sur but you’ll pay a lot more and the stores are just small general stores.
*We do supply some firewood for the wood stove but if you bring some of your own please make sure that it’s natural wood and not treated with wax or other substance. If it lists on the packaging “not for indoor fireplaces” that is the wrong kind. They do carry just the natural wood as well and the other is dangerous and toxic for indoor use.
*In case I am not here to welcome you personally please pull into parking area and park straight ahead to the left of the lattice gate. The Calla Lilly is behind the lattice gate. If the door is locked you will find the keys to the Calla Lilly are in the lock box to the right of the door. The combination for you is 1212. When going in and out on your excursions you may want to either take the key with you or keep it in the lock box. Please keep the other door locked (the one right next to the one with the lock).
*The bedroom is all ready with sheets and pillow cases on the bed
*The sofa bed in the living room sheets and blanket are in the drawers to the left of the sofa.
Just remove the pillows and pull the mattress out from under them
*The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and baking …minus the food of course.
*The wood stove is ready to go….you’ll find a lighter provided or a match. Be sure to close the door on wood stove when fire is lit. Please don’t make a huge raging fire but allow the flames to get to a good medium and continue to feed the fire when needed. When you go to bed be sure to close the vents on the wood stove door to about a quarter opening so that it will burn more slowly and stay warmer most of the night. You’ll find some wood near the stove and more in the brown shed in the driveway.
*To make your own fire: scrunch up some newspaper sheets and make a pile in the middle of the fireplace. Place the lightweight pieces of wood on top of this like a tent or teepee; put a few more scrunched pieces of paper (3-4) on top of that and then a couple of slightly heavier pieces of wood on top of that. You’re ready to light the paper and get your fire going. Once it starts burning well, add another piece of wood to keep it going. At first keep the vents open all the way and after a while close them to about halfway.
*When leaving the house on an excursion please don’t leave with a raging fire going. If you do have a little fire going just close the vents all the way on the wood stove door tight.
*When you leave the house please try to remember not to leave many lights on in the house as we want to be energy efficient. Also it can be cost prohibitive and we want to keep this place running efficiently.
*There is a porch light switch to the left of the front door so be sure to turn that on if you plan to be back after dark.
I have supplied art materials for painting and journals should you feel inspired to express yourself this way.
There is an iphone/ipod dock on the window sill by the front door.
*If you need to clean a spill or any other messes you’ll find some cleaning materials under the kitchen sink.
*The lights in the garden/yard area have motion lights so they should go on once you’re near the door. There is a flashlight hanging on a hook to the left of the door (inside).
*** We respectfully ask you to not smoke anywhere in the house. The best place to smoke is in the parking lot area away from any houses.
*The number of guests agreed to on your contract is the number expected.
*Carabella’s Theatre and Sofanya’s Gallery:
This is a public area for all guests where you’ll find a stage area, comfy chairs to sit and relax, a BBQ and more art supplies. Feel free to spend time in this area enjoying the trees, reading and just taking in the fresh air and surroundings.
*Art Gallery: This is located on the garden level of the Dome House. The door is usually open and you can turn on lights and check out the art. If you are interested in having an Essence Portrait done please let me know.
*Internet: I usually leave a land line in the art gallery if you need to make a U.S. call. If you have an urgent need for internet please let me know and you may go online for a short time. Otherwise there are locations within 5-20 min where you can access internet readily. We have low bandwidth in this neighborhood of the forest.
You’ll find some of Sofanya’s original paintings and wood sculpture in and around the house or her gallery on the garden in front of the Dome House. Most of the paintings are also available in high quality giclee reproductions in any size. You may also make an appt for an Essence Portrait with Sofanya.
