The next festival here in Funchal is the CHRISTMAS ILLUMINATIONS which are turned on round about the 6th DECEMBER and continue for about a month. Every street, lane and building - as far as the eye can see - is decorated. Ofcourse this culminates in a magnificent fireworks display to WELCOME IN THE NEW YEAR. The view from the apartment is absolutely spectacular and you feel as if you can reach out and touch the fireworks. Do not miss out on Funchal at this time of the year as it will be forever remembered.

Comment: We had eleven great days on Madeira staying in Sandy’s apartment. The apartment is big and has everything you need when you are away from home. The view from the apartment is fantastic and we enjoyed our breakfast at the balcony looking at Funchal and the sea every morning. Sandy made us feel at home and helped us with everything we needed such as arranging taxi from the airport, helped us with grocery shopping the first day, busses, booking levada walks etc. Thanks to her it was easy to get the best possible out of our stay.
We decided to visit Madeira because of the warm weather that the Island experiences. The apartment was exactly like the photos on the Home Away site with a spectacular view of the harbour and City. It was a lot larger than we expected and is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The apartment faced South so we were all able to sun-bathe on the balconies from morning to the latter part of the afternoon. The evenings were very mild and we enjoyed the beautiful sun-sets. We did not have to rent a car and took Sandy's advice and used the local bus because the service was excellent and the busses were always on time. We love historical sites and enjoyed walking through the Old Town past the small church and on to the Fort. There are many restaurants in this area and we ate there regularly. Sandy is very knowledgeable about the Island and gave us lots of advice about trips, levada walks and gardens. We will definitely return to the Island because there was so much to see and do and we only had one week.
The apartment is located in the mountains of Funchal, near The Botanic Garden and the "lift" to Monte. The apartment has a beautiful view from its two balconies, overlooking Funchal, the harbour and the sea. In the evening/night you'll see the lights from the city and mountains. Very beautyful!
The apartment is nice with large kitchen, two bed-and bathrooms.
The owner, Sandy, is a very kind, serviceminded and helpful hostess, who knows the island in every detail and is generous to share her knowledge.
From the apartment it's very easy to reach the city-center with bus or taxi.
The apartment is located in Funchal nearby the upper entrance of the botanical garden, from where a cable car rides to Monte. Two bus stops in front of the apartment allow you to be in the city centre of Funchal within ten minutes.
The apartment's bright rooms are spacious and very well equipped. Two balconies provide a delightful view of Funchal and its harbour.
The landlady—a worldly-wise English lady—lives downstairs and greatly helped us (starting on the day of our arrival) by organising a taxi service, driving us to a grocery store, providing a sight-seeing tour to Cristo Rei and in the direction of Lobos, organising a rental car, and even doing online check-in for our departure.
Thanks to her outstanding local knowledge, she gave us handy tips for exploring all parts of the island.
Despite good bus connections and lots of taxis, you should rent a car for at least four days. The rental car was actually driven up at our doorstep. By using the motorway-style highway and winding (but well-drivable) streets, we reached faraway places like the lighthouse at the western tip, the impressive peninsula in the east of Madeira, the stately cliff coasts in the north, and the plateaus in the interior of the island. That is why we had new and spectacular impressions each day during our holidays.
Sandy was the best hostess we ever met!

Great Apartment, nice view, nice landlady, easily accessibility, no heating
We had a short (4 nights, 3 day) visit in Madeira. Since we did not want to rent a car, we asked Sandy to arrange for a ride from the airport to the apartment. The driver was waiting for us as we cleared the secure area of the airport. As soon as we arrived at the apartment Sandy greeted us and gave us an overview of the things such as bus schedules (3 lines very close to the apartment), brochures, maps and tours. We had decided we wanted to go on a tour the second day we were in Madeira and Sandy coordinated the reservations with a service that used an eight person minibus. Our first day we went to Monte and took a toboggan ride (which was not worth the cost). We went to downtown Funchal and visited the municipal garden, took the Blandy's wine tour, visited the Colegio Church and walked around downtown. After dinner we took the bus back to the apartment (Sandy had provided an excellent description of where to get the bus). The next day we took the tour to the western part of the island. While the weather was not the best we were able to see many sites in a reasonable amount of time. Our final day we went to the fish and farmers market in the morning (Sandy had advised that it is the best time to see more activity) and visited the Cathedral of Funchal before heading back to the apartment. In the afternoon we went to the botanical garden that is only a five minute walk from the apartment. It was very large and we enjoyed the wide variety of plants and birds. The following morning Sandy has arranged for the same taxi and driver for us to get back to the airport. If we had been in Madeira for a longer time we would have wanted to do a levada walk and also see the eastern part of the island.
We enjoyed the view from the apartment and would rent again if we returned to Madeira.
We stayed here for a week in February. It is a very pleasant apartment with wonderful views over Funchal harbour. The apartment itself is well equipped and a good base for exploring Madeira.
The apartment is not in the centre of Funchal, however the view more than makes up for that. There are regular buses to Funchal centre - about a ten minute ride - because of this it is not necessary to take taxi's etc unless you plan to return late at night.
There is a lot of information about Madeira made available in the apartment - so easy to get inspiration.
The botanical gardens are on the doorstep, and there is a cable car station to another botanical garden a stones throw away. There is also a very pleasant walk to Monte if you continue up the hill to the terminal bus station - you can walk around the valley too Monte - about a 30-40 minute quiet walk suitable for even the lazy.
The apartment is just 50 metres above the BOTANICAL GARDENS and BIRD PARK with access by CABLECAR to the village of MONTE (known for it's magnificent GARDENS, CHURCH and TRADITIONAL TOBOGGAN RIDE which is still in existence). One is presented with spectacular panoramic views of the City and Harbour - particularly towards evening - with just a 10 minute (3 km) bus ride into Funchal. For hikers and walkers the local bus (directly outside the building) will transport you to the LEVADA WALKS leading to MONTE, the Tea House and CAMACHA. Also, in close proximity, a shopping centre provides the amenities of a mini-supermarket; chemist; bakery; hairdresser; general store; dry-cleaners; fruitery; florist and cafes. The apartment does have street parking space for a car rental although this is not a necessity as the bus service is an excellent, reliable and economical mode of transport. The Motorway is just 2km distance and the Airport is a 20 minute drive to the apartment (20 km).
Other Activities: LEVADA WALKS, GARDENS & SCENIC BEAUTY
Golf: Madeira has two Golf Course facilities........Palheiro Golf Course is situate high above the City of Funchal in close proximity to the Botanic Gardens, commanding a spectacular view of the surrounding area. Santo da Serra Golf Club (18 hole) is approximately a 30 minute drive from the City and is known for hosting the annual Madeiran Open towards the end of MARCH.
