BARGA -COTTAGE AND RESTORED BARN 6 HECTARES OF LAND AND PRIVATE POOL

Barga Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 3 shower rooms, sleeping 6+2.

A lovingly restored 3 bed detached stone cottage, and separate 1 bed chestnut house (let together), both with original beamed ceilings and flooring, situated in the hills overlooking the beautiful medieval town of Barga. Just a 10 min. drive or so from town, yet very peacefully situated in circa 6 hectares of private farm land/forest high up in the hills. The views from both the houses/extensive patio area & the land are stunning. Eating al fresco is a real treat -the lights of the town provide a romantic backdrop, and due to the altitude it feels possible to touch the stars! Alongside the patio area there is a large original outdoor pizza oven. In the fields above, there is the infinity style swimming pool (5M x10M). If you like to cook, then the house is perfect - there is a wood burning 'aga' in the kitchen, a modern oven 'outside' and also the pizza oven & BBQ. The houses are furnished in traditional style, are well equipped and lovingly presented. A perfect 'remote, yet central', and ideal for groups of two couples requiring privacy from each other, but plenty of room to dine and socialise together.

This choice is ideal for families, with plenty of room for children to explore the grounds, and with the second outdoor kitchen you need never set foot in the house during the day if you prefer! Just use the outdoor kitchen for your supply of cold drinks and wine, & to prepare those salads hand picked from the grounds...

The pool is situated above the house, with stunning views of the countryside...

There really is a feeling of pure peace at this house,& it is the perfect place to completely relax, and enjoy the pleasures of the scenery and the quiet!

This is an agriturismo and as such bees are kept on site, at a good distance from the house, (fresh honey provided) and there are 3 resident cats - not permitted in house. There are also goats in a field up above the pool area.

Fuller details - main house:

The property retains most of its original features, with original chestnut beamed ceilings throughout, and wooden and terracotta flooring.

There is a wood burning stove in the kitchen, and a large fireplace in the living room.

For summer living there is also an 'outdoor' kitchen .

Ground floor:

Large entrance hall, with dresser.

Living / dining room with open fireplace, Satellite TV including English channels, DVD, Internet access.

Farmhouse kitchen with large eating table, wood burning aga style stove, separate small hob, grill, fridge and microwave. Door leading onto:

Extensive patio area overlooking the town of Barga. Outside eating furniture, and sun beds. Outside clay pizza oven (the owners will show you how to use this if you wish to have a go), and fully operational chestnut drying house.

From the patio there is an 'outside kitchen', with oven, freezer, fridge, washing machine and dishwasher. There is also a further shower room, so that the house can be redundant during the day if you wish!

Upstairs:

One double bedroom

One twin bedroom

Extensive 'landing' area with TV, and sofa bed.

Modern shower room

Barn:

The property has a real romantic feel and is complete with four poster bed!

On the ground floor there is a living area with large windows and arched doorway out to patio, separated from the kitchen/dining area by a circular working fireplace which sits in the middle of the room and therefore heats the entire house.

Kitchen has oven, hob, fridge, washine machine… living area has working fireplace, dvd player.

Up the spiral staircase there is a lovely romantic double aspect 4 poster bedroom with doors placed opposite the bed, to take advantage of the wonderful views..

There is also a good sized modern shower room.

Grounds:

The private 'infinity style' swimming pool (10M x 5M plus roman steps) is high above the house so as not to totally spoil the traditional feel of the property, and to ensure it remains totally out of sight. The view from the pool is wonderful and the style of pool means it feels one is swimming in the mountains

The owners are very keen to share their love of the area, and will be happy to provide for all your needs.

NB:

Not suitable for elderly or infirm due to steep Climb to the pool.

MOST STUNNING VIEWS

  • 5 of 5
Mengarino is easily the best holiday rental we have ever stayed at. The house is a typical Italian cottage with thick walls that'll keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. We stayed at the 2 bed cottage; no one stayed in the smaller 1 bed cottage. The garden is enormous and you basically have the top of a hill all to yourself. There is nobody else around, total privacy. Well, apart from the 5 sheep that the owners keep to graze part of the land! There are various outbuildings and it makes for a very rustic place.
The house has a basic Italian style kitchen (but with dishwasher and microwave), lounge and large hallway downstairs and a shower room with plenty of hot water and two bedrooms upstairs. Good decorative order.
The views of the mountains are superb and you're a 10 minute drive away from Barga. We were very unfortunate with the weather in May, it was cold and wet but the house was lovely and warm.
Owners are delightful, friendly and very easy going. We spend a - for us - very memorable Sunday lunchtime with them and their family. Using the outdoor pizza oven, Marco's mum baked the most wonderful pizza's for us. Absolutely wonderful. Great place and thoroughly recommend it, especially for those with kids – there is lots to explore without leaving the property!

THUMBS UP FOR THIS PROPERTY!

  • 5 of 5
We just returned from our stay at Mengarino and I must say that all of the previous comments still apply (only the cats were no longer there). The owners are the most hospitable people, while still respecting your privacy. The pool is fabulous, and you will not tire of the view of the valley and the mountains, which changes with the movement of the sun. Barga (at 10 minutes by car) is a beautiful little town and there are many other sites to visit in the area.
We can definitely recommend this property and are already dreaming of returning one day.

WHY GO SOMEWHERE ELSE?

  • 5 of 5
What else can I add to the other reviews?
Everything was perfect : the setting, the views, the peace and quiet, the amazing pool, the cats and their kittens etc etc The house is comfortable and about 15 minutes drive from Barga where there is a supermarket and other shops and restaurants. Also very convenient to drive to Barga station, leave car there and train it to Lucca, Pisa etc But Al Mengarino is such a great place that we hardly went anywhere and had a relaxing sunny time in the chestnut hills. Our only regret is that we did not get to taste Marco's pizza but he gave us lots of his delicious honey + an opportunity to practice my Italian. We will keep very good memories of this part of Tuscany, which we had chosen because not in Chianti or the more "touristy "areas.

RELAXING STAY IN BARGA

  • 5 of 5
Highly recommended - accurate description, secluded, authentic, tranquil, clean, great outside area including pool, fabulous views of the surrounding area, unobstrusive and very hospitable owners.

Use of a car essential.

House itself is beautiful - traditional, full of character and well maintained. Kitchen, small hall area and dining/living room downstairs (along with outside kitchen/wc). Up the stairs to a landing area (which can double as an additional bedroom) and 2 other bedrooms along with a bathroom. Outside seating enables al fresco dining with wonderful views.

Small number of (rustic/slightly uneven) steps to reach the pool which has stunning views (for those of reduced mobility or with very young children/babies there is a slight detour up a path available for those not great with steps).

Resident bees kept away from the house and produce a 5-star honey. Part-time resident cats (and handful of sheep which are kept in neighbouring field!) quiet, friendly, fun and very well behaved.

Good restaurants and local shops far enough away to reinforce the complete immersion into secluded country life yet convenient enough when needed.

We tend not to return to holiday destinations but if we ever came back to this region we would happily stay at this property again.

A PIECE OF TUSCAN HEAVEN

  • 5 of 5
We stayed at Mengarino, Barga in June 09 and cannot think of a more idyllic place to take a relaxing holiday. The house seems to blend so perfectly with the surroundings and the animals, sound of buzzing bees, friut trees and fragrant flowers truly make this an oasis not to be missed. The house was spotless, well maintained and had everything you could want for very comfortable self-catering. The location & views were amazing, and the range of terraces around the house means that you can follow the sun (or the shade) as the day passes. Marco and Simonetta are incredibly helpful & hospitable and their pizza night is a treat not to be missed.

The pool is a true highlight and no pictures can do justice to the views !

Barga is a great little village just 10 minutes down the road. It has good grocery shops, cafe bars and a few restaurants. We had no reason to go any further!

Overall I cannot overstate how happy we were at this house - I am sure we will return again & again & again....

WHAT A GEM!

  • 5 of 5
We are a couple, who had a fantastic week at Mengarino in early May 2009....nearly had our teenage children visit us but they couldnt make it, they would have loved it.

The cottage has all the facilities you are going to need for your stay with a well eqiuiped kitchen for cooking wonderful Italian produce. The outside kitchen is also very handy and must come into it's own from June to September when al fresco is in full swing. The infinity pool above the cottage is simply stunning with views to keep your mouth ajar during your stay, so is the fantastic vista from the many points in front of the cottage where you can eat or just sit and watch.

The sunset is in the perfect place from the cottage front or the pool...wherever you want to be to have it full in your face until dusk!

The main bedroom has a view from it's window that you will not forget, especially on the mornings when there is mist in the valley below......

The owners, Simonetta and Marco do not live near the cottage but visit regularly, especiallty Marco who tends to the Chestnut trees, bees and lambs who are let out to feed on the grass and wander if the occupants are OK with it.....the lambs wandered into the kitchen the week before we arrived!

They both continue to work hard on some buildings within the property and land when they can ...none of it noticeable during your stay there...unless you dont enjoy watching a beekeeper (Marco) tending to his swarms down on the terraces from time to time! All the bees are harmless by the way.

Marco and Simonetta normally offer a pizza evening with the guests, using the bread oven next to the chestnut drying house to create pizza's like you heve never had before! Plus they are really lovely people and even if you are after just a quiet (no-one near you) stay, make sure you have an evening with them or simply just get to know them while you are there. We had some fantastic honey, local meats and pecorino cheese from them.

We will certainly return to Mengarino and recommend it for all types of holiday as a base for.....sightseeing, walking, just being in the Garfagnana area or just relaxing there on your own or with your family.....great for young families!

Enjoy..........
