|Property type||chateau / country house|
|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
Visitors to this ranch are stunned by the natural beauty of its setting, (only 30 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge) and the comfort and tastefulness of the house itself. Sitting quietly at the top of a hill and accessed up a long winding private country driveway, coastal live oaks and California bay trees mark the hillsides of this iconic California landscape. Set on 200 acres there are amazing views of hills and valleys in every direction, but not one sign of civilization anywhere. This is true country, yet only 10 minutes to Petaluma and 40 minutes to San Francisco restaurants. Hawks and eagles abound and the iconic turkey vultures soar on the wind currents overhead. The resident owl hoots at night! Flocks of wild turkeys and herds of deer are everywhere. After visiting local sights for a few days, many visitors ultimately just sit on the front porch to read a book and enjoy the view for the rest of their visit.
The house is set right in the middle of natural wild fields (no suburban manicures lawns here!) surrounded by magnificent coastal oaks and bay trees. The property is intentionally left mostly wild as nature intended it to be. That is part of its great charm, pure serenity and comfort amid a secluded natural setting.
There is, however, much to do if you wish to be active. There is a large pool with built in hot tub (extra $100 hot tub fee not included in rent), and a paddle tennis court just beyond the pool. There are great opportunities to hike on the property in the winter, spring and early summer, or at nearby parks. The property is perfectly located for visiting all of the local sights. Point Reyes National Seashore and the magnificent California coast (and redwoods), Sonoma and Napa Wine Country, Stinson Beach and San Francisco are all less than an hour away. The closest town Petaluma is 10 minutes away, and has a lovely historic center with many restaurants and stores.
The house was designed to have large entertaining spaces so the living room and kitchen/dining are both very large. There have been many wonderful lunches on the porch! The house has 4 charming bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths, one private and one shared between the two upstairs rooms. Three bedrooms have queen beds, and the fourth has two twin beds. The twin bedroom uses the half bath in the hallway and a shower in one of the other bedrooms. The country kitchen has lots of counter space and an enormous island workspace. A large wooden country table seating 12 people sits nearby and french doors open beyond the table onto the wrap around porch. There is a 6 burner Wolf range, with large oven, plus a second oven and other high end appliances. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need for a country feast. The house is beautifully decorated with fine furnishings. The house is well adorned with art and curios. The main porch runs 70+ feet and wraps both sides of the house.
A caretaker lives in a separate dwelling on the property, and the owner is 30 minutes away.
Make your reservation soon while it is available!
Two brothers (one a lawyer, one a businessman) from San Francisco own the property and have been in this special corner of Marin and Sonoma Counties for 40+ years. Their mother purchased this particular property in 1988 and built the house in 2000. It is currently enjoyed by their families and children as a weekend and summer house.
Andrew Spiegel purchased this chateau / country house in 1988
There is very little like this fabulous region of California and the house sits beautifully amid wild, natural, unmanicured fields. Yet, it has the interior finish and furnishings of a much larger, elegant country estate. The property sits quietly away from the hubbub of life up a long driveway on top of beautiful completely private hill. There is not another house visible from the property! There is a caretaker on site who lives just beyond the entrance gate and keeps a close eye on everything, but should only be contacted in an emergency. There are extraordinary vistas in every direction that make even the most jaded, seen everything, done everything, world traveler, swoon. Yet, the property is centrally located to easily visit all of the wonderful spots north of San Francisco. Unlike Napa which is a long days drive from the spectacular coastal region (Point Reyes, Stinson Beach, Bodega, Tomales Bay) and Sonoma which is much further from The Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco, Three S Ranch sits in the middle of all of these attractions. 30 minutes to the coast, Point Reyes, Sonoma Town Square and the Golden Gate bridge, 40 minutes to Napa, Healdsburg, the Russian River and San Francisco restaurants. Everything is within easy reach. Yet, you are secluded on your own country mountain top.
There are virtually no other houses for rent in this area of Marin/Sonoma. Look around VRBO! If you want peace and quiet in a country setting without being too remote from local attractions, this is the property for you. Most other houses for rent around Petaluma are much more suburban. This house is rural yet it is exceptionally well appointed. Unique, in our minds!
Wow! What a terrific getaway this was for my family and friends for the Thanksgiving holiday. The kitchen is absolutely fully stocked with all the utensils, plates, pots n pans you would need for a cooking holiday. We all kept saying we felt like we were in our own kitchens.
The house has a cozy lived-in feel with a wonderful fireplace as a back drop to all our scrabble and backgammon games. No T.V. but we watched a lot of movies on the DVR. They also had speakers for your iPod and a CD player with a lot of music to choose from.
The view and quietness of the property is the special part of the home. You automatically decompress staring out at the mountains, watching deer feed on the property and the sound of cows mooing from the nearby ranch.
The property also has a pool, hot tub and paddle court which we did not take advantage of but would be ideal in spring and summer.
My niece and I hiked down to the main road and back up to the house and figured it was a 3 mile (round trip) hike.
We took a 40 minute ride west to the town of Point Reyes, which has charming shops and a few great restaurants. Beware we found most of the restaurants in the town closed in the afternoon and reopen for dinner with the exception of one. You can also head to Petaluma for some serious antiquing, shopping and eating and they also have a movie theater.
You are guaranteed to have a relaxing stay at Three S Ranch. Enjoy!
This home and wildland environment is a privilege to view and an unforgettable experience to inhabit. My friends and I felt so fortunate the owners were willing to share it with us.
Wonderfully outfitted with dishes, glassware, silverware and towels. Loved the artwork and the swimming pool is lovely. We felt right at home - such an easy place to be.
We had such a wonderful time at the Three S Ranch!! The location was great and there were many fun activities to do in the area: wineries, breweries, great restaurants and just taking in the scenery!! We loved having the pool and hot tub. So relaxing!!! We would definitely recommend this property to others! Also, this place was ready to live in-sooooo comfortable!! I'm glad we found this vacation rental! Thank you for making our vacation memorable!!
I rented this home for my husband on his birthday, and it was an incredibly delightful experience. The house is gorgeous, the view is spectacular, and the pool is amazing! We felt so relaxed and took advantage of the great Petaluma location as well. We could not have been happier. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer...
What a special place! When you arrive you feel like you've driven to somewhere just beyond the Middle of Nowhere (although downtown Petaluma is not that far and spectacular Pt. Reyes is a reasonable drive as well). You step out and all you see is rolling hills and probably a pack of deer grazing - it is glorious. The house is well-appointed with everything you need for a long-weekend - just add food and water. The pool is awesome (read the instructions - easy, but important), and if you venture onto the paddle tennis court, get ready to relearn everything you know about tennis - it's a blast, but it's very different. Beds are all very comfortable with lots of toasty blankets. There's books to read and lots of DVDs to watch, but why bother - just sit on the porch and look at the beauty all day. It's really something.
This area of California is famously beautiful. The property is situated midway between the extraordinary cultural life and beauty of the city of San Francisco and the most famous parts of California wine country. Sitting literally on the Marin and Sonoma County border, outdoor activities are very popular. Hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking, windsurfing, ocean fishing, going to the beach, and shopping and dining in unique and beautiful places are all an easy drive. Take a drive to the Point Reyes National Seashore, look for whales at the Point Reyes Light House, walk Limantour beach, visit the wonderful stores and restaurants of Point Reyes Station, Petaluma and Sonoma, grab a picnic in Petaluma, or wander up the coast to Hog Island Oyster Company and sit by the waters edge while you eat fresh oysters (or barbecued) just pulled from Tomales Bay while you grill fresh sausages (bought down the road at Marin Sun Farms in Point Reyes Station) and sip local wine and craft brews. A Great Day!
