Best studio location in Kaanapali's best resort! When Honua Kai was still just a blueprint, we had the choice of any unit in the development. We chose this one. On the 5th floor, it is high enough to provide views and ambience, but not so high that the resort experience gets diluted. We waited for the Konea tower so that we could get the layered view of courtyard, tiki torches, the classic thatched roofline of Duke's Beach House, and views of Molokai Channel and Lanai. The view is terrific during the day and stunning in the evening. We opted for the location on the north side so that the tropical sun is more filtered and nuanced in the afternoon. Of course, the interior location means trade winds are gentle and you enjoy the sounds of lapping waves and chirping birds instead of the highway sounds more prevalent with exterior units.

The condo itself is perfect. The bed is super-comfortable and is positioned to capture a direct wake-up ocean view. The view gets even better while enjoying a meal or drinks on the lanai (balcony). The kitchen is spacious and fully equipped with high-end appliances, dishes, and cooking utensils. We even have BBQ utensils so that you can cook up your favorite steak or seafood using the resort BBQs. The sitting area is very comfortable with a sofa that folds out into a bed. We also provide a Pak 'n Play for little keikis. Of course, the unit comes with a washer/dryer and laundry detergent. You'll also find a couple of boogie boards, two beach chairs, and an umbrella. The bath has a full-size tub for soaking, a shower, and a vanity area with a make-up mirror and blow dryer.

Honua Kai is top-rated for good reason. It is the first new whole-ownership beachfront property built on Kaanapali in 20 years and has all the expected features of a luxury resort. Besides the beach, enjoy an elaborate kiddie pool complex with a 40-ft slide and lazy river, a separate adult pool, fine dining at famous Duke's on-site restaurant, organic deli selections at Aina Gourmet, on-site BBQs, work-out facilities, the luxurious Ho'ola Spa, underground parking and more. By the way, Duke's was just named as one of America's top 100 places to dine al fresco!

Honua Kai is conveniently located within a 5 minute drive to Lahaina and a 10 minute drive to Kapalua. Relaxing at the beach, snorkeling, diving, surfing, hiking, golf, shopping--all you need for your Hawaiian vacation is just minutes away. Or, be rejuvenated by never leaving the resort -- it's all good!

Our rates are very competitive and we offer great deals for last minute bookings. Mahalo!

About Barbara

We have been visiting Maui for years. In fact, my husband worked his way through college by spending extended summers managing employees on the local Maui Land & Pine pineapple plantation in Napili. The site of the Honua Kai resort was previously one of his pineapple fields-no wonder it's such a sweet place!

Barbara purchased this condo in 2013

Why Barbara chose Kaanapali

Given our affinity and connection with West Maui, we were thrilled to hear of the conceptual Honua Kai. As the first new whole-ownership resort on Kaanapali in decades, we loved the idea of a 5-star resort on the quiet end of Kaanapali near Napili and Kapalua. We've watched it rise from an old pineapple field to a beautiful resort and couldn't be happier!

What makes this condo unique

As mentioned, we selected this unit because it provides the best combination of setting and comfort. Most important was an interior location that feels like it's in a different world. Our entire view is of the resort and the ocean. The interior setting protects us from wind gusts, and the only sights and sounds are of the resort and the ocean beyond. The Konea tower is nicely oriented to take in the island of Lanai and our location in the tower protects us from the direct summer afternoon sun.

Inside, the unit is very conveniently located right across from the elevator for quick access to the lobby and underground parking.

Breath Taking view of Kanapali Beach Front and incredible place to stay for a Maui Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Two Words HOLY COW! It was absolutely incredible staying in this amazing resort and even better room. I cant imagine a room having a better view than what this balcony offered us during our stay. We could actually see whales from our room splashing and playing around in the ocean. I still cant believe the price and how underpriced this room is for the value you get with it. All appliances were brand-new or art least seemed that way. The food in the area was out of this world. We loved Kimo's Ribs and everything else we tried there. We also really liked a place called Java-Jazz directly across the street from the report in the same shopping center as the grocery store. This is the most conveniently located resort, and room in all of Maui. You have to go to the bakery/restaurant Leodas I am not exactly sure about the spelling. Now back to the room. The room seemed much bigger than the said Sq Footage probably because the entire glass windows are actually sliding doors that open up the room to the balcony and make your front room seem like it is the beach right outside. The pools at this place are perfect for both a romantic getaway at the quiet reserved pool or for a family vacation with kids of all ages. The grills outside by the pool were never crowded and seemed very clean. If I could give 6 stars I would. I feel like I didn't pay these people enough money but I am ok with that because now I might be able to afford to go again sooner than one every 3 years. My wife is pregnant so she needed a quiet relaxing place and although this is a great place for kids there seemed to be more than enough room for everyone and she found tranquility anyways. The workout facility could definitely be bigger but it got the job done. This is coming from a man that is on a mission and has been for a year now to get in great shape once again in life. So I am sure most people would be just fine with it. Dukes is one of the local favorite places for tourists and locals alike to eat and it is located right at the resort. The beach right outside seemed a bit rocky but maybe if I had looked around enough I would have found a better area but the beach was good enough where I was and we still had a great time at it.

Magic Maui

  • 5 of 5

This condo was exactly as described - beautifully decorated and maintained, and located in a fabulous complex. It contained everything required for a comfortable stay and even included many extras such as beach chairs, beach umbrella and sufficient bathroom and cleaning supplies for the duration of our stay so we didn't need to purchase extra. The doors fully open out onto the lanai, creating extra space and a tranquil outlook onto the courtyard and ocean beyond. The condo owner was friendly and efficient in her communications, and always happy to answer any queries we had about nearby services and restaurants.

Terrible Smell

  • 1 of 5

This unit smelled horribly. When we checked in, there was an odor I couldn't really place. I was so excited to explore the unit that I let it go. By the first night the smell was so strong, it hit you like a wave when you walked in the unit. I'd guess the unit was aired out before we checked in to hide the odor on arrival. If I had to guess, I'd say it was mold or mildew, and it was coming from the washer/dryer closet. I contacted the property manager, who said she knew nothing about the smell. After she inspected the unit she said she smelled "a very strong coffee smell." I felt pretty insulted by that. She said she would have work done on the unit while we were there, but that never happened. When we got home and opened our suitcases, the smell was stuck in all our clothes, which had to be washed/dry cleaned. We were never compensated in any way, even though the property manager said she notified the condo owner of the issue.

On the bright side, the Honua Kai property was amazing. Our unit would have been pretty luxurious without the smell, and the grounds are immaculate and beautiful. We loved all the pools, Duke's, and the gourmet market. Location was great; very close to Whaler's Village and other good dining. Try Star Noodle and Miso Phat sushi! The view from the beach is gorgeous, though I'd warn that the beach is short and rocky at one end.

One draw back of the property was the roving sales people. They would approach you in the pool area and try to sell you overpriced beach products. Then they ask you to mention their names in reviews so they get points in their sales contents. Other than that, we loved everything about the Honua Kai property.

Owner's Response: As our other 5-star reviews show, we really make every effort to provide the best possible vacation experience for our guests. We regret that this guest had a sub-standard experience. Our property manager promptly relayed the situation and maintenance was called immediately to address the issue. The odor was indeed coming from the washing machine and required a major service. We tried to contact the guest multiple times with no response. We booked the subsequent guest in a different resort room at our expense so that the washing machine could be sanitized and the unit aired out. Guests since then have enjoyed the customary 5-star experience. We truly appreciate any and all feedback from our guests as it helps us maintain the property in superb condition.

This condo was beautiful and met all of our expectations. The condo owner was so great to work with and always responded back to me with tons of info and in a timely manner. The resort is so clean and well taken care of. Our unit was decorated so beautifully and we enjoyed the beautiful while hanging out on our lanai. We can't wait to return, it was paradise!

Lovely Ocean, grounds and pool views as described.

  • 5 of 5

Would certainly recommend this property to friends. Description accurate. Interior is lovely & bed most comfortable. Very much appreciated spices & condiments & items in refrigerator that I would normally have to purchase.

Very much appreciated the Tommy Bahama beach chairs, coolers, umbrellas provided by owner. Certainly made our stay. Plenty of room for the two of us. Resort is beautiful, well maintained and all personnel friendly and helpful. Owner most helpful in emailing me information detailing directions from airport, where best to shop for food, local restaurants, etc. She made our trip easier upon arriving with these details. I would definitely recommend this unit to friends. Had a wonderful time. Mahalo

Outstanding Experience

  • 5 of 5

This condo is perfectly situated on a beautiful and famous stretch of beach with pools, restaurants, and shopping nearby. It is very nicely furnished with plenty of space. The views from the balcony are stunning, and the balcony doors fully open across an enormous length to provide an outdoor ambiance. The resort has many amenities, including pools, water slides, grassy areas, and a water activity center. The ambiance is quiet and friendly.

With Kaanapali Beach only steps away, we love to set up our Tommy Bahama beach chairs and umbrella and spend the afternoon watching for breaching whales while enjoying picture-perfect sunsets. A hidden gem is the Kaanapali Beachwalk, a boardwalk which originates in front of Honua Kai and stretches for over two miles along Kaanapali past Black Rock and the other resorts to the south. A great diversion for walkers is on the mauka (mountain) side where the former pineapple fields are now planted with coffee and stretch up to the West Maui Forest Reserve. Check www.trails.com for great routes and locations of ancient petroglyphs. We also love an occasional drive on the narrow road that leads around the backside of West Maui. We always stop at the bright green Julia's Banana Bread in Kahakuloa for a tasty treat. Remember that this drive is on 'island time' and is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. The backside of West Maui also has some great hikes through tropical forests. If you park for a side excursion, be sure to leave your car unlocked and a window cracked so the locals know not to be curious. Ok, last tip and then a recommendation. While on island, we try to make multiple stops for shave ice in Lahaina at Local Boys. The shop is right across from the famous banyan tree and, with Roselani ice cream in the bottom and flavored ice heaped high, the shave ice treat is ONOLICIOUS! With so much to do on Maui, we recommend that you read 'Maui Revealed.' It is the best guidebook that we have found for both well-traveled and little-known attractions on Maui. So much to do, so little time. Or, just indulge yourself and kick back at our beautiful Honua Kai resort! It's all good!
