It's just that Puako is such a rare and special place and to have a chance to Live Work and Play in this area for many years now, We count our blessings, Mahalo David & Kim

Other than LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION, I would say;The fact that the property had an original !940's Beach cottage which was worth saving and we wanted to continue giving folks a chance to enjoy this incredible area and in the style of an earlier Hawaii that helped to make this a special choice for us Mahalo David & Kim

Perfect place for a small family!

  • 5 of 5
We absolutely loved our stay at David's cottage. He had anticipated every possible necessity for our family's needs......snorkeling gear and towells and he even filled up the bird feeder when he discovered we enjoyed bird watching. The ambience of the cottage is very relaxed and it is super clean and comfortable. The bikes that came with the cottage were perfect to peddle 5 minutes down the road to some of the best snorkeling that we have ever done. Our kids are 13 and 15 and they were more than content with the great beach options within biking distance, and Puako is also a great base to take some wonderful day trips within easy driving distances. Owner David will totally let you enjoy your privacy but he will also answer any questions you have about the area immediately when you ask. We love birds, and we would begin every morning with our coffee on the deck and we had many different species visit the yard, which was a great way to enjoy the start of the day. This cottage will perfectly allow you to soak in the quiet and relaxed pace of hawaii and we would recommend it to anyone wanting a clean, comfortable and relaxing place to enjoy Hawaii's wonderful pace of life. Our family of four had an unforgettable week and we will definitely return!

Outstanding Big Island Get-Away Cottage

  • 5 of 5
This was our first VRBO experience and it was superb.
This recently remodeled and well-maintained cottage was more than we could have hoped for - it was clean and inviting and well-stocked with everything one would need (but could not bring along) for a great Hawaiian vacation. By the way, the pictures and description are accurate.
For those looking to 'go green', look no further, as this remodel took that into consideration.
We loved the privacy, the great kitchen, the washer/dryer, both lanais, the outdoor shower, and the pleasant Hawaiian décor. Plus the bed was very comfortable. And everything was up-to-date and worked as it should.
This cottage is excellently located near the end of a quiet dead-end road, yet convenient to grocery shopping, great beaches, and superb restaurants. It is only a few miles to excellent shopping (where you could find anything you forgot), and the roads are great. Also, emergency provisions are just a mile away at the General Store in the center of Puako.
The owners do live on the property - but you wouldn't know it. The cottage is very well separated from their home. Over the 12 days we were there, we only saw David twice - but we were thankful for both conversations, as he is filled with local knowledge and most interesting to chat with. If you are looking to rent from someone who will treat you the way they would like to be treated, I believe these owners will satisfy that desire.
I left a shirt behind (on purpose). Maybe another traveler will need it. But more importantly, it symbolically reminds me that I must go back to this wonderful place someday 'to retrieve it'.
If you are looking for a reasonably priced cottage that has everything you will need for your Hawaiian get-away, look no further - because this place will meet (or exceed) your expectations. We didn't want to leave - and will return as soon as we can.
Get yourself a BIG ISLAND REVEALED guidebook, plane tickets, a rental car, a few groceries/beverages when you get there . . . PLUS THIS RENTAL COTTAGE, and you will create some memories that will linger - probably forever.

Great host, great cottage

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful week at this cottage. It was close to an amazing beach, (beach 69), and convenient for grocery shopping. Dave was very helpful and knowledgeable. It is a very quiet area at night. Not recommended for people who want to go out at night. But, it is great for people who want to swim or snorkel, or just enjoy nature. Turtle pools are right up the street. We are a mother-daughter team, it was nice to each have a room.

Paradise in Puako

  • 5 of 5
Stayed for eight days at David and Kim's perfect little getaway. From the moment we entered the cottage, with a cacophony of birds greeting us from lush tropical foliage surrounding the cottage, we knew we found the right place to relax and melt away our stress for the next eight days. We loved staying here-it was the perfect place for us. The place was tastefully decorated, super clean, and though adjacent to David and Kim's house, we had complete privacy. Dave was a wonderful host and even brought us lilikoi fruit from the lilikoi vine in the yard and local bananas from a neighbors property. We used the two beach cruisers to tour the shoreline trail and went snorkeling across the street at one of the shoreline access points - saw sea turtles, tons of fish and our friend who joined us saw an eel. Went up to Mauna Kea beach hotel for cocktails one night; the hotel has a manta ray showing every night .... a light is shone into the water from shore and manta rays are attracted to the plankton that the light illuminates. Super cool and .... free. Definitely recommend it. Also recommend heading down to Captain Cooks Monument - we rented kayaks from Kona boys and headed down to the bay across from Captain Cooks. Swan with 40-50 spinner dolphins for several hours that were resting in the bay. That was an absolute magical experience and the highlight of our trip!!!!

Highly recommend the cottage - we will definitely plan to stay there again on our next visit.

The perfect spot for the two of us

  • 5 of 5
We spent two separate weeks here and it was perfect. Exactly as advertised.Very clean and well taken care of. Total privacy. Kitchen was well-appointed which we appreciated because we are cooks. The "Puako stroll" is a great after dinner activity. Beach chairs, bikes, even reef shoes. What more could you ask for. David was a great host. A wealth of information if you want it or he leaves you to yourself if that's what you want.

Puako is the only ocean side residential community on the Kohala Coast. It is still a well kept secret of original cottages and large estate homes nestled on the coastline where all of the major 5 star resorts have been built. Small beaches and petroglyph field within walking distance. Sheltered reef for snorkeling, shore diving, swimming, under water photography.
