Lancaster Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Stunning 3 bedroom all en suite to sleep 6 in the rural North West of England

The Shepherds Barn is recently converted 5 star self-catering accommodation, very spacious with the highest level of comfort and design. It is situated in the picturesque rural valley of Quernmore of the Forest of Bowland. The views from the 'barn' are stunning.

Perfectly located, the Shepherds Barn is only 3 miles from the historic town of Lancaster, and within 40 minutes drive of the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and Blackpool by the sea, it is the perfect base for exploring the North West of England.

Inside there is a huge lounge/dining room with a central real flame gas fire. The kitchen has the extra warmth of a traditional farmhouse aga for cooking. There are 3 spacious bedrooms, all are individually designed, all are en-suite.

There is also a unique opportunity to watch the Sheepdogs, like those from 'One Man and his Dog'. And if you are really interested you may be able to try to work with them yourself!

Everything we were hoping for

  • 5 of 5
We had so much fun, and so relaxing a time here. The holiday started as soon as we got off the motorway and started driving through roads where you could pick blackberries from both windows at once. The children raced through the barn finding all the best bedrooms and different ways to get to the same place. My sister's Jack Russell raced manically round the walled garden, and the rest of us had a nice cup of tea by the aga in the kitchen.
We had the most glorious sunshine so never got to put the fires on, but the terrace was well used.

For food there are fresh eggs every morning from the farm at the bottom of the drive. There is a fantastically stocked farm shop about 5 minutes drive with wonderful meat - and then the kitchen has everything you could want to cook it to perfection.

Our best day out was when Thomas invited us to go to a sheep-dog trial he was competing in just up in the Lake District. It was a brilliant day with a few cars parked in a field, loads of dogs, belligerent sheep, venison sausages and Collie Wobbles beer. Best of all, Thomas got a new puppy which our kids fell in love with and didn't let out of their sight for the rest of the holiday. They were allowed to bring it round to get its first glimpse of sheep during a training session Thomas was running. We also had a very good day on the beach at St Annes.

The only thing I was sad about was that there was no pub within walking distance! Otherwise just perfect.

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5
Are you stressed? Under pressure? Shepherds Barn is the place to be. The barn is absolutely stunning, we woke up each morning, looked out of the window to fields up on fields. We spent time with the owner, Thomas and his dogs. Thomas showed us how to direct the dogs with various commands. Thomas also spent some time with my own border collie Zak and gave us some useful training tips. My parents even bought one of Thomas's dogs, Ella, who is friendly and loving.

The barn itself is everything you can imagine and more. The pictures simply don't prepare you for the size and beauty of the Barn.

We look forward to our next visit.

First Class

  • 5 of 5
The Shepherds Barn is first class; it’s relaxing, very well furnished and is set in beautiful countryside. We have been twice now and certainly recommend staying here. It ticks all the boxes for us; its modern, comfortable, clean, warm, spacious, there is a walk in shower, a range cooker, a dishwasher and we can take our dog.

The owner Thomas is very friendly, caring and around if you need anything. Thomas will do dog training on the farm. Thomas has done training with our border collie Poppy and we are very pleased with the results. Poppy enjoys her time at the barn too!

The barn is an excellent base to explore the surrounding countryside, towns/cities, coast and the Lake District. There is a nice farm shop at the Lancaster Leisure Park on Wyresdale Road just 5 minutes drive from the barn and another not too far away on the A591; The Lower Sizergh Barn. Just one point to note; if you are driving to the M6 from the barn it’s quicker to head towards Caton than going through Lancaster.

Absolutely perfect!

The Shepherd's Barn is everything that it is described to be and more. It is placed in the picturesque, tiny village of Quernmore, about a 5 minute drive to Lancaster. You will absolutely need a car if you stay here. It is not within walking distance of any pubs or stores. If you are looking for a quiet (except for sheep and dogs noises), clean, large, modern, warm, comfortable, beautiful place to stay, then Shepherd's Barn is the place for you. We stayed here with my almost 80 year old mom and dad, who could not climb the stairs to a bedroom, and with a large master bedroom downstairs, they got along splendidly. The place has everything...3 bedrooms (all comfortable), 3 huge, modern baths and 1 small guest bath, a wonderful and warm kitchen, due to the oven that gives off heat for the colder seasons, a dining room, a living room, a laundry room and there is even a private kennel for your dog. We spent a lot of time in the kitchen having tea and coffee with biscuits and just looking out at the splendid countryside and watching Thomas feed the sheep. We also entertained guests in the lovely dining room/living room with gas fireplace. We also had a special treat when Thomas allowed us to watch one of his dog training classes...he even let us try. When we were not staying at the barn, we were traveling to all of the wonderful sites of the Yorkshire dales and Lake District. Everything was magnificent. We put over 900 miles on the car just viewing the scenery and visiting historical spots. Driving on the roads here is not for the faint of heart, especially for Americans who are not used to driving on the left or on VERY narrow roads. Our GPS took us on a few very eventful trips (over England's highest peak...by accident) and on some roads that were no more than dirt driveways. We did get there, but do have GOOD MAPS to back you up. Except for needing a car, not having a direct route to the M6 and a few very minor problems (gas stoves not working in bedroom and not being able to use some of the complicated contraptions in the kitchen) Shepherd's barn is the perfect place to stay. Must sees: Bolton Abbey, Dove Cottage, Muncaster Castle for views, Windermere, Drives through dales,Holker Hall and Gardens, York and Castle Howard (if you can go that far). Disappointing: Hilltop. Downright scary, but breathtaking: Hardknott pass in the Lake District.

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5
I first stayed in the Barn in October 2010 and had a great time and thought I would like return at some time. I managed until November 2010 before I came back for another week! The accommodation is first class, with beautiful comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms. The kitchen is just the best, warm and cosy kitchen ever, where you can sit for hours with friends sharing great food and wine. We also explored the local area and found there are plenty of places to visit and things to do if you can tear yourself away from the Barn. The local park is well worth a visit and the city of Lancaster is only about a 15 minute drive away. You can enjoy a nice lunch in the Refreshment Room at Carnforth Train Station, which is a must for anyone who remembers the old film 'Brief Encounter' which was filmed there in 1945.

I would definitely recommend spending time with Thomas, watching how he works the sheep with his dogs and have a go yourself with your own dog, or if your dog does not demonstrate a talent for working sheep, mine still has a long way to go, Thomas will help you to work the sheep using his brilliantly trained sheepdogs. This was a great experience and I am already planning when I can go back to the barn again.
