Captain J's is 97 year old and has been in the McKinnon family since 1949 when John McKinnon the first bought the house from Mr. and Mrs. Cave. The Caves built this house with wood from the old armoury on Bowen Island after the First world War in 1919. When Mrs. Cave became ill, they were forced to sell and that was when our grand dad purchased this house.
When grand dad bought this place, him and Grama lived downstairs with two suites for rental upstairs. In 1957 John McKinnon died of heart disease and grama moved up to one of the suites upstairs and rented the bottom suite out to Vi Madsen who stayed here for 50 years. John McKinnon the second and his family came up on weekends and summers till he retired, then they split their time between here and Coquitlam.
In October, 2006, John McKinnon the third, acquired the house from his Dad and started on a journey to renovate the old place and make it our home. We started off with tearing out all the flooring downstairs and digging down 5 ft to lay a foundation. From there we worked withthe help of friends and family for 2 full years. It has been a journey through time and family history as we discovered writings stuck in walls, old bottles, golf clubs and many hidden treasures along the way. This old house is a time capsule of the McKinnon family history with old doorframes marked with children's heights and ages to timeless memories of family get togethers and summer fun.
John and Cindy McKinnon purchased this house in 1949
John has been up to this summer place all his life, and then of course brought his wife Cindy and their children. This was just where we came every summer, or weekend we could get away, so if was only natural to make it our home in the end.
You only need to wake up one morning and look out as the sunrises over the water and the mountains sparkle with snow too know you have come home. Sitting in the early morning with your coffee, where else would you want to be.
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Seaside Suite for a couple of nights and were sad to leave. The suite is very clean and beautifully decorated and we loved being lulled to sleep at night by the sound of the waves. After busy days roaming around the Gibsons area we were very happy to relax on the deck next to the ocean with the waves lapping at our feet or in the extremely comfortable living room. We highly recommend the Seaside Suite and want to thank Cindy and John for being such accommodating hosts. We would love to return one day.
We stayed at Captain J's for a weekend to celebrate my girlfriends birthday and can honestly say that it was one of the most relaxing weekends of our lives. The view is breathtaking and the home is very well kept with lots of rich history. The hosts are very accommodating and go out of their way to make guests feel comfortable. Thank you so much for your hospitality and we will surely be back next year.
The title of this suite is so true-you are literally 5 steps from the beach and water. The owners are like your old best friends, Cindy & John are terrific hosts. The suite is a 5 star plus. From all the history and personal touches John & Cindy has put on this suite, it will be a memory maker. You will want to come back again and again. The little town of Gibsons has so much to offer to visiting traveler's. You will not want or need for anything at this rental - they have everything covered. You will not be disappointed. It is worth its money and more.
Cindy and John were very easy hosts, friendly and hospitable. They allowed us to invite our friends over for the fireworks and to enjoy a day at the beach. The suite was beautiful, everything you might need for you stay, although the weather was so nice we didn't stay inside much. Sitting on the porch for our morning coffee and in the evening with a glass of wine were highlights.
Terrific place to stay right on the beach with friendly helpful hosts. A lovely well supplied clean suite with lots of room and comfy bed. Excellent place for kayaking, swimming, reading and an easy walk to Gibsons Landing for restaurants, shops, museums and wondering.
The vacation home was charming and comfortable. Beautiful scenery all around. The owners are very welcoming and went the extra mile to make our stay comfortable. We enjoyed our walks on the beach and liked that we could walk down the beach to cafes and strolls through town!
Just a short ferry ride away from the busy rush of the city, you'll discover why locals live here 365 days a year! You will see breathtaking beautiful view of waters sheltered, like Smugglers Cove, to hiking to white water at the skookumchuck. Our local talent is nothing short of amazing from music in the Landing through out the summer to Jazz Festivals and an aray of artists and art studios. (check out our art crawl every October)
