HUNTERS/HIKERS PARADISE W/LOG CABIN ON 240 ACRES IN ETLAN VA

Etlan / Old Rag Mountain Cabin Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms, 2 baths, with Majestic Mountain Views

Beautifully sited at the crest of Dulaney Mountain in scenic Madison County, Ragged Rock Ridge has one the most magnificent views in the area. Your first impression upon arriving will WOW your very senses, the expansive views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah National Park and the FT Valley below is spectacular. At the centerpiece of this spectacular view is Old Rag Mountain which has the deserved honor as the most popular mountain in Shenandoah National Park.

The cabin consists of a circa 1800s Chestnut log cabin, dismantled and erected atop the Ridge in 1997, and was expanded by adding a log home made from Western Hemlock logs. The cabin will sleep 8-10 comfortably, having 4 spacious bedrooms, and two baths. It is designed for an open floor plan affording space for a great room with large stone fireplace, dining area and charming kitchen with custom heart pine cabinets, above the kitchen and dining area is an open balcony. A full length porch runs across the front of the cabin for entertaining and enjoying the view.

There is a lovely stone patio, with stone fireplace, housing a lovely pergola, with cascading grape vines. Evenings are special at Ragged Rock Ridge sitting on the patio under the pergola watching the sun slowly set behind Old Rag Mountain, with a crackling fire in the fireplace, and glasses of red wine from our local vineyards, it just doesn’t get any better than this.

Upon entering the property there is a sense if serenity, the sound of mountain streams, wildlife and total privacy of the property leaves you feeling like you are truly on vacation and have left the worries of the world behind. The larger of the two ponds, with dock, is stocked with Large Mouth Bass, Sunfish, Bluegill and Catfish while the smaller pond, with its footbridge and cascading waterfall is stocked with Rainbow Trout.

A vast network of trails, through the magnificent hardwood forest, is located on the property’s 240 acres for hiking , mountain biking and horseback riding. Just a few minutes’ drive to the Appalachian Trail, Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon. The land is a habitat for deer, bear, fox, turkeys, the occasional owl, and red tail hawk, and a bald eagle that has been known to frequent the pond. Centrally located Ragged Rock Ridge is within 30 minutes of Culpeper, Charlottesville, or Sperryville, where you can enjoy antiquing at Copper Fox Antiques or perhaps a tour of the Copper Fox Distillery, home of the famous Wasmunds Whiskey. (just tell Rick Audrey and Al sent you) Ragged Rock Ridge is centrally located to many local vineyards, Ducard, Rappahannock Cellars, Sharp Rock just to name a few.

For the avid sportsman there is hunting for deer and turkey through the hunting season, don’t forget to bring your pistols or shotguns and use the pistol range that has been set up for your enjoyment. There is also a skeet pull for the marksman in your family. If you have horses and would like to plan a trail riding vacation we have the very place for that, there is two fenced pastures with water access, two run in sheds, and wonderful trails to ride on. ( horses must be current on shots and coggins) Ragged Rock Ridge is truly nature’s paradise and has something for everyone.

We have enjoyed building a haven for ourselves for the past 10 years and would like to allow others to enjoy our retreat. We know how important getting away can be, and this is the perfect place to do just that.

Audrey Regnery purchased this cabin in 1997

In 1997 the property was just a vision of sorts, a small clearing at the top of the mountain. Over time it has become a hideaway, back away from the hustle bustle of the big city, to a wonderland filled with nature. Our favorite times are just after a snow when a full moon lights the way for a midnight walk. This property remains quiet and peaceful no matter what is going on in other parts of the world.

We wanted a place that would be the perfect place to get away from it all, and with many years of doing one project after another we feel we have accomplished that desire. Ragged Rock Ridge has something for everyone, hikers, hunters, fisherman, it is a wonderful place to enjoy nature, come listen to the birds as they chirp their songs to wake you in the morning. Have breakfast on the porch and watch the humming birds as they fly from one feeder to the other. Look out over the mountain view and watch the valley below. Evenings are magical with spectacular sunsets as the sun slowly sinks behind Old Rag and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance appear a deeper blue, or sometimes the fog sets over the sleepy village of Etlan in the mornings giving you the feeling you are in a far away and magiacal place. Come see for yourself we are certain you won't want to leave.

This cabin truly was "Hunters/Hikers Paradise". I had a surprise birthday party for my wife with family and friends. Thanks for playing it so cool, Audrey! My wife had no idea it was for her surprise birthday party. Everyone loved this place and had a great time. This log cabin is beautiful and luxurious. I would recommend this cabin to anyone.

We recently rented this cabin for a guys weekend away and it far exceeded all expectations. From the stocked ponds to the pistol range and skeet shooting off the top of the mountain, this cabin is a must stay for any outdoorsmen who is looking for a great time in the mountains. The view from the top is breathtaking and the sunset over the Blue Ridge is a must see.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5
This is truly a wonderful getaway location. Beautiful views and total privacy. Wonderful hiking, fishing, and so much fun for our group to enjoy all this property had to offer, including the shooting range. The outdoor fireplace area was one of our favorites. Beautiful in the evening and lots of fun to cook on during the day also. The kids and dogs had fun running around with all of the freedom, catching fish, hiking, playing games, reminded us of our childhoods full of simpler times. Pictures do not do this wonderful vacation rental justice. You will not be disapointed, it's a fabulous place to spend your time.

New Year's on the mountain

New Year's on the mountain

Location, Location, Location! I hate to say it but it’s true and Ragged Rock Ridge delivers tenfold. The setting is perfect and the views down into the valley are incredible. The cabin itself is gorgeous with all the comforts of home. My group of 8 couldn’t believe how well stocked the kitchen was! Less than 2 hours away this was the perfect place to spend New Year's (just remember to bring a 4Wheel Drive Vehicle - they aren't kidding about the drive up to the Cabin)!

Heavenly Mountaintop Getaway Soothes the Soul

  • 5 of 5
Everything about this secluded, 4WD accessible log cabin speaks to our innate need to reacquaint with the glory of nature. Its location--about 1 1/2 hours from Metro DC--kept our Thanksgiving travel relatively stress-free. But it was the place itself, set high atop a heavily wooded mountain, that delivered everything we had hoped for in a slowed-down, outdoorsy, family-centric retreat. Audrey and Al have created a dream home in a dream location, and provide their fortunate guests with nearly every creature comfort we could need or want: comfy furniture and beds; a large, open gathering space where board games dominate; a well-equipped kitchen where I cooked our Thanksgiving dinner; ever-changing views of Old Rag that kept us awestruck, a shooting range for daily target practice with all of our five kids; a stocked pond where our youngest reeled in his first fish; winding hiking trails that tuckered us all out--even the happy pups; and proximity to Sperryville for great dining and crafting. I think the kitchen might have more spices than my own (not kidding!). It was the perfect time away! Dish TV allowed us to watch a Star Wars marathon, but the absence of cell service meant my kids' eyes were on the world around them, not a screen. We definitely want s'more of this incredible mountain home...we'll be back to experience another season in this extraordinary cabin in the woods.

HIGHLY Recommended - Look no further

Our family (3 people) and my sister's family (5 people), along with our dogs spent an incredible weekend on Ragged Rock Ridge. Initially we selected this rental based on its proximity to the trailhead of Old Rag Mountain and the number of bedrooms but we were blown away at our good luck.
The place is much more than described in the listing - the cabin itself is much more lux than advertised with its comfy bedding and fully appointed kitchen. We really appreciated the comforts of the cabin and especially the outdoor fire pit after a highly successful day of hiking Old Rag!
The house was very clean and everything was in excellent condition. The owners thoughtfully had a new stack of firewood and plenty of kindling on hand for us.
Mostly we enjoyed the outdoor fire pit where we even grilled steaks! The shooting rage was interesting and we explored a few of the hiking trails on the property leading down to the horses.
Definitely requires a 4X4 vehicle to access the cabin and that made it all the more "cool" for the kids! Really an adventure for us suburbanites!
Audrey was extremely helpful throughout the rental process and I especially appreciated her guidance and kindness upon on our arrival - thanks for the hospitality Audrey!
Old Rag is a worthy hike - plan to spend a good part of the day reaching the summit.
I can't say enough good things about this great cabin in the woods!

Ragged Rock Ridge is centrally located in one of Virginia's largest wine operations, there is a large number of vineyards within a 30 minute drive. There is also a distillery within 20 minutes. Antiquing is a great past time in this area and we have many shops available.

For the gun enthusiast there is a pistol range on the property, and also a skeet shooter for your use.

If your not into guns, there are 240 acres of hiking trails available and marked for you to enjoy.
