We are a humble couple with 4 adult children (2 in and 2 out of college). My husband and I ventured to this beautiful part of the state and fell in love with this area. After two+ years of remodeling and tweaking we're ready to share all of the fun we've had as a family with others who wish to do the same. We currently live mid-state and both are teachers.

Lori or Darren Mort purchased this house in 2003

Besides the spacious, comfortable living quarters with all the amenities you could want, the river really caught our attention because it is wide with a current that allows you to relax for a smooth ride whether you are canoeing, rafting, swimming, etc. This is also a designated trout stream area. The various trails are exciting and well manicured for quads, snowmobiles, motorcycles and horses. Most trail heads are within one mile from this property. So it makes for a fun stay no matter what the season happens to be!

Whether it's for one couple or quite a few with their families, this large 5 bedroom home has up and down decks with swing, picnic table, and patio furniture. There is a large fire ring out back with plenty of yard to play your favorite yard games. Bocce ball, croquet, volleyball and croquet gulf have been enjoyed. Back decks face the National Huron Forest. So much to do and see! If you need down time--it's here! If you are the active type, there are so many choices! Ideal location with 9 river inputs from Mio. Hence, the river rides can last from 1/2 hr. to 7+ hours long. Single or Small groups certainly can afford this type of fun!

What a great place to stay, the house is very spacious and accommodating. Everyone in our group could sit around the large fire pit. Loved the "Up North" feel inside and outside. Thank you Mort's for a wonderful experience, we will definitely be coming back!!

Simply amazing

  • 5 of 5
We were there as a family of 20 adults. This place is PERFECT. The house is beautiful with a real cabin feel. They had everything you could possibly need. There was lots of room for all the young adults who wanted to tent out. A big enough fire pit for everyone to fit around. All the games both inside and out made it impossible to be bored. The home owners were easy to deal with and very prompt in responding to all questions. We will definitely be coming back and would recommend this place to anyone. It's definitely worth every penny.

The house was great, although we would have enjoyed it more if we had spent more time there! Doing the AuSable River Marathon kept us on the move during most of our stay, although the central location between Grayling and Oscoda was definitely helpful. There were only 6 of us, which seemed like a waste of all that space. This house could comfortably hold 20, with plenty of things to do. My son is now a 3 Stooges Fan!

We did have some canoe rigging and repairs to do, and took advantage of the saw horses in the pole barn. Being able to wash and dry our wet stuff after the race was also great. I would recommend your place to anyone doing the race, and during the race, met a family who stayed at your place last year.

Besides the other considerations, I also selected this house with the expectation that my mother, sister, and handicapped nephew would stay with us. They ended up not being able to join us, but for the most part, the house would have worked pretty well for them. There are plenty of bedrooms on the ground floor, bathroom doors were pretty wide, and although there are two small steps to get a wheelchair up. I think we could have managed it.

Excellent rental for a large group!

  • 5 of 5
This is the perfect rental for a large group. Talk about all of the amenities you could ever need!!! My husband and 13 of his close friends had a great long weekend at this beautiful cabin. The owners are awesome to work with and the cabin has everything you need for a break from reality. Stocked kitchen, linens provided and even the canoes are included in the rental. This is truly an amazing escape. We will definitely be returning =)

Fun-filled family fiesta!

  • 5 of 5
Our family, who range in age from 8 to 80 stayed at the Mort's vacation home in Mio over the labor day weekend and felt right at home from the moment we walked in. First of all there was something for everyone, the cooks in the family had a well stocked (pots, pans, dishes, utensils, etc) kitchen that was open to the dining room and downstairs living areas (as well as an outside barbeque for grilling). The card players had a large dining room table where many 6-handed euchre games took place. The kids enjoyed the large screen tv, complete with The Three Stoges videos while the adults played cards.
We had ping pong tournaments, volleyball tournaments, pool tournaments, badminton tournaments (we provided the equipment for badminton, all other equipment was provided by the Morts), and we even devised our own obstacle course using the various yard games we found in the garage.
At night each of us had our own bed! Truthfully I haven't slept so well in several years.
I guess my best testament to the home, the atmosphere, and the endless amenities is that on my next trip to Mio I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else. In the past we have rented several cabins side by side in Mio, but being able to stay in the same house, with so much space gave us so many more opportunities to make lasting family memories.

Great Get Away

  • 5 of 5
First impression was that this place was totally awesome. Proved to be so. Minutes from the river (docking and unloading). Also perfect for hunting. Great outdoors feeling inside but still feel at home. There is plenty to keep busy and entertained. Highly recommended.
