About Leah Schryver

Canada is COLD! And Alberta winters are FREEZING! That was one of the determining factors in deciding to purchase our vacation home in Chan Chemuyil. We LOVE to travel and we LOVE the Mayan Riviera. The beaches are spectacular, the people friendly, the culture amazing and what a better place to go to relax and get away from it all. We are the Schryvers from Radway, Alberta, Canada. My husband owns his own painting company and I am in the teaching profession so that has enabled us to travel quite frequently. We have two boys ages 4 and 1 that we hope to give as many cultural experiences throughout their lifetime as possible. We have made this Casa our 'Home Away From Home'....and invite you to enjoy the place that we love. This house is well equipped to handle families with a baby or young children.

Leah Schryver purchased this house in 2010

Why Leah Schryver chose Akumal

We were in awe with Chan Chemuyil after visiting for 10 days back in 2008. After taking a few more trips to Quintana Roo we decided to take the plunge and purchase in this region. It has been one of the best 'crazy' decisions we've made. Everytime we travel we go on a new adventure. To us a vacation means relaxing so if it takes us 10 years to explore the whole region, so be it! You will definately want to return after experiencing the comfort and beauty of Casa Calida.

What makes this house unique

When we purchased this Casa it was very much in need of upgrades. It was our first 'New Home' and it was very exciting to pick out, design and purchase everything that we wanted for it. From picking out the towels and bedding to designing the furniture, we wanted it to feel like home. We wanted it to be inviting and comfortable and that's exactly what it is. We spend hours in the backyard with the music playing, enjoying the pool and cooking on the BBQ.

With travelling with our young sons, we have everything that they'll need. Sippy cups, Playpen, bathtub, water toys, bouncy chair, cartoons. This is why I think our home will be appealing to families.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent a week at Casa Calida and our stay was great fun. The house was lovely and exactly as advertised. The kitchen was ready to use, the internet worked perfectly, and everything needed for a great trip the beach was there. My daughter just loved the small pool in the back patio! The location really gave us a relaxing place to rest our head gave my daughter a better way to experience Mexico than a resort possibly could. The property managers Bill and Lois were just lovely and greeted us upon arrive and gave us a tour of Chan Chemuyil and the nearby pueblo of Chemuyil. The owners were easy to work with and really communicated well.

Owner's Response: Thank you for being excellent renters Mattie. We are glad that you were able to enjoy our Casa and let your daughter have the kind of 'cultural' holiday that we feel is important and that we try to provide for our boys as well. We are very happy that our property managers were able to give you some helpful hints towards our beautiful little community and that you had a great vacation.

Wonderful month-long working vacation

  • 5 of 5

We spent a fantastic month here with our two young kids working from Casa Calida. This house had everything we needed--super comfy beds, videos & sand toys for kids, stocked kitchen, fast Internet, and a great location in a friendly neighborhood within walking distance to a stunning beach. The adjacent pueblo of Chemuyil and the nearby cenotes made it even better. I can't say enough good things.

We were not interested in the all-inclusive type resorts, but given our Internet needs for work we couldn't go rustic either. Chan Chemuyil let us live close to the beach with all the creature comforts but in a laid back neighborhood rather than in a resort. If you are staying for a short vacation you could get away with using the colectivos (public buses), but having a rental car was really convenient for grocery shopping, dropping off laundry, and taking weekend adventures.

The owner and property manager were great to work with, the neighborhood is safe, and the neighbors on the block are wonderful.

Owner's Response: Kerry, it is wonderful that your time at Casa Calida was enjoyable. Staying anywhere for a month can be a long time but we are happy that you found our place to be comfortable and to have everything that you needed while on your working vacation. Thank you again for being wonderful guests! We hope you have the opportunity to stay with us again in the future!

Great house and location!

  • 5 of 5

We loved Casa Calida and Chan Chemuyil! The location is great, quiet and yet close enough to lots. So cool that there is a cenote right in the neighborhood. Exploring the little town is great, super nice people, excellent (cheap) food. Our favorite meals were at El Parque (across from the park). The house has everything you need - we used the beach gear everyday! Wifi was great (with a couple reboots on the router), pool is refreshing and private. The only thing we had trouble with was our rental car reservation - next time (we hope there will be a next time), we'd probably just use the collectivos (van/buses), that seem to be up/down the main road all day long. Both the owner and the property manager were excellent about answering questions, providing suggestions, etc. Lots of Americans and Canadians in the neighborhood that were also really friendly and happy to answer questions about the area, buying property, etc. Thank you so much for sharing your vacation home!

family travellers

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to Casa Calida late on a Friday. After a long and eventful trip all we wanted was to put our son into bed (playpen was easy to set up:) and to have a cold drink. To our delight there were some cold beer in the fridge!

After getting settled in the first night, we felt right at home. The outdoor living space is wonderful, private and shaded, and great lighting in the evening. We enjoyed vegging on the couch to a movie after spending the days at the gorgeous beaches and cenotes in the area. The backyard pool was a hit for our toddler. Anything and everything you would need for a day at the beach was provided. The bed in the master bedroom was soooo comfortable.

We have visited the area several times and love the ease of travel and the natural beauty. We will most definitely be returning, and Casa Calida will be where we stay!!!! Thanks!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

I arrived at Casa Calida the evening of Jan 10th, 2013. Even in the dark it was easy to find and the keys were in a lock box right outside the door. This little house felt like home immediately. The kitchen was very well equipped and there was water on the cooler, the beds were super soft an comfortable and the the home was very clean. The owners even left a lovely little welcome package with some tropical body wash, lotion and spray.

It seems as though the owners put a in a lot of thought when furnishing and decorating this home. All the furnishings are really beautiful dark wood and fit perfectly in the space. The artwork on the walls and little decorative touches were really appreciated as well. I especially loved sitting on the back patio in the evening an admiring this stunning metal art piece over the pool.

The back yard was really lovely! The pool was deeper than I expected and wonderful to sit in to cool off from the hot afternoon sun. There is also air conditioning in every room but I rarely used it. I found the ceiling fans were enough to cool off the rooms enough to be comfortable.

A short drive (slowly cause the road is rough) through the back jungle road takes you to Chemuyil. There are a couple restaurants in town that I went to. Leo's Pizza and La Palapa. I recommend La Palapa to anyone visiting. Great food and the owner Valentine was always welcoming. There are also a few little grocery stores but I did most of my shopping at the Chedraui in Tulum. The Chedraui was easy to find and had absolutely everything you would need to make any meal. I recommend the ceviche pescado they had in the deli. You can drive to Tulum or easily take a collectivo. Turn left at the first set of lights coming in to Tulum, its on your left hand side.

I didn't make it to the beach across the highway (just not a beach person) but if I had wanted to go, there was no shortage of beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers etc to take with me. They are all in the second bedroom and easily accessible.

There are many other amazing things to do right in the area. Xel-Ha is a short 3km away and Dos Ojos Cenote is really close as well. I spent 2 days at Xcaret. For 35 pesos you can hop a collectivo there and take a cab back at night for 305 pesos.

All in all, I really loved this little casa. I had a really hard time packing up and heading home. I can't wait to return!
