About Gayla Schmitt
George Rayborn grew up in Hattiesburg in southern Mississippi and Maureen got here as soon as she could, right out of college. From then on, although living in the north-east, our love affair with Mississippi, especially the coast, grew.
Both retired attorneys, we do volunteer work in Pass Christian and our other home of Deleware. We enjoy our time at Oyster Reef and know that you will too. Our hint, our local library is one of the best, with not only books, DVD's & computers, but events & concerts.
Our good friend, Gayla Schmitt, handles most of the arrangements for renting Oyster Reef for us, as well as being a local presence to help with any special needs. 'Where can I find fresh shrimp? At the harbor on the boats'
Gayla Schmitt purchased this house in 2004
Why Gayla Schmitt chose Pass Christian
We have lived in Pass Christian at different times over the past 40 years. In 2004, we bought a lovely old home surrounded by live oak trees on this beachfront land on West Beach Boulevard. A year later, Hurricane Katrina washed away our home and its guest cottage. The only things that survived were the trees and our mailbox. Over the next several years, we lived in various places, including a FEMA trailer and out of state, while we built a new small rear cottage first, and finally this wonderful, Creole-style home overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The house is furnished with lovingly restored furniture from my childhood home, along with new, bright, fun beach-type pieces and artwork. We love the new house and we think that you will too. Maureen and George Rayborn
What makes this house unique
Our front screened porch is what brings us back, always. Just sit and watch the fishermen, dolphins & white sand beach, while enjoying your book.
Where else can you look out from your porch and watch the 'tongers' bringing in oysters on the reef, then go to the harbor and buy them fresh? Of course, there are also the shrimpers and fresh shrimp or just go to our local restaurants and let them cook it. All of these are what make us want to keep returning to Oyster Reef.
People - we have the friendliest, most-hospitable people in the world in Pass Christian. Just ask someone for directions and the next thing you know, you'll be sharing lunch.
