Pass Christian House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedroom, 2 Bath Beachfront Creole Cottage with Pool

Oyster Reef, our beach retreat can be yours. Located just 45 minutes from New Orleans, it is a world apart. Custom built 3 years ago our home is set in a stand of majestic live oak trees, which makes it a birders paradise for watching resident and migrant birds. The home is beachfront with a very wide, very deep, very private screened front porch spanning the front of the home. Follow the oyster and shrimp boats fishing on the Mississipppi Sound of the Gulf of Mexico.

Our private pool is large and features a large deck across the rear of the house.

Non-smoking property - minimum one month rental.

The interior of the home has 12 foot ceilings, beautiful crown molding, ceiling fans and wide pine floors throughout.

The large living room is highlighted by French doors opening onto the front porch, and a wood burning fireplace. The dining room seats up to eight and includes a floor-to-ceiling closet with wine cooler. The kitchen features a double wall oven, gas range top, granite counters, lighted wall pantry and lots of cabinets and shelf space. Laundry room with washer & dryer is in the living area.

The master bedroom, with queen size bed, faces the beach and opens onto the screened porch through French doors. The guest room, with twin beds, overlooks the pool. Each bedroom has its own full bath.

In this quaint little town, you can enjoy golfing, tennis, fishing, boating, walking and hiking, beachcombing, sunbathing and a beautiful harbor filled with historic fishing boats and modern recreational craft. Downtown Pass Christian features wonderful restaurants, pubs and gift and specialty shops.

Golfers really appreciate the two golf courses located in Pass Christian, Timber Ridge and The Oaks, plus multiple others on the coast. These are popular year around with our mild weather.

Boaters/Fishermen - there are 5 boat launches within a mile of Oyster Reef, plus multiple public piers, and of course, salt water wade fishing right out our front door.

About Gayla Schmitt

George Rayborn grew up in Hattiesburg in southern Mississippi and Maureen got here as soon as she could, right out of college. From then on, although living in the north-east, our love affair with Mississippi, especially the coast, grew.

Both retired attorneys, we do volunteer work in Pass Christian and our other home of Deleware. We enjoy our time at Oyster Reef and know that you will too. Our hint, our local library is one of the best, with not only books, DVD's & computers, but events & concerts.

Our good friend, Gayla Schmitt, handles most of the arrangements for renting Oyster Reef for us, as well as being a local presence to help with any special needs. 'Where can I find fresh shrimp? At the harbor on the boats'

Gayla Schmitt purchased this house in 2004

Why Gayla Schmitt chose Pass Christian

We have lived in Pass Christian at different times over the past 40 years. In 2004, we bought a lovely old home surrounded by live oak trees on this beachfront land on West Beach Boulevard. A year later, Hurricane Katrina washed away our home and its guest cottage. The only things that survived were the trees and our mailbox. Over the next several years, we lived in various places, including a FEMA trailer and out of state, while we built a new small rear cottage first, and finally this wonderful, Creole-style home overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The house is furnished with lovingly restored furniture from my childhood home, along with new, bright, fun beach-type pieces and artwork. We love the new house and we think that you will too. Maureen and George Rayborn

What makes this house unique

Our front screened porch is what brings us back, always. Just sit and watch the fishermen, dolphins & white sand beach, while enjoying your book.

Where else can you look out from your porch and watch the 'tongers' bringing in oysters on the reef, then go to the harbor and buy them fresh? Of course, there are also the shrimpers and fresh shrimp or just go to our local restaurants and let them cook it. All of these are what make us want to keep returning to Oyster Reef.

People - we have the friendliest, most-hospitable people in the world in Pass Christian. Just ask someone for directions and the next thing you know, you'll be sharing lunch.

Beware! The house is lovely, the location is wonderful, the town is friendly and interesting. We are an elderly couple and we stayed for six weeks. We did very little. Walks on the beach, lots of reading by the pool... Most of our cooking was small meals at the house. We thought that this had been a great vacation -- until the end. What a surprise. We had to call to ask for our security deposit back. The manager told us that we had broken a lamp, had parties, left mounds of sand on the floor and left the place unbelievably dirty and had STOLEN towels. What? The lamp she said we broke was one we had never used -- we certainly did not break it. We swept up every week. We were on the beach every day -- there was sand, we swept it up. We never had any visitors at the house -- let alone a party. We washed all linens and towels regularly, we washed counters, ran the dishwasher a few times a week and generally straightened up. The idea that we would steal was the worst of all the things the manager claimed. We never steal anything, anywhere -- let alone towels!

We are an elderly couple. I have woken in the middle of the night for many weeks now reliving the accusation of having stolen something. While the house is wonderful, the management made me feel that I had been lied to and cheated. We paid clean up fee (in addition to the security deposit). It is true that we did not wash bathroom floors or toilets -- we were on vacation and we thought we were paying for that in the cleaning fee --- we did not abuse this lovely house or leave it in a poor state. We put blankets over the south/east bedroom windows because there are no drapes and we do not like to wake with the rising sun. We called the manager and told her that we were covering those windows. We used the compression traverse rods that were in the closet to hang the blankets – the manager claimed we put holes in the blankets -- we did not. I feel lied to and cheated and abused. We did get 20% of our security deposit back. We asked for an itemized accounting and a copy of the 'repair bill' for the lamp that we never used -- but got none. There was no inventory or initial accounting or leaving process. You are at the mercy of whatever management makes up. I suggest you take photos of everything at move in and move out. We have rented over a dozen homes and condos on Home Away/VRBO in the last few years. We had never had a cent of any of our security deposits taken before.

Owner's Response: We are proud of our vacation home and our team keeps it in excellent condition for our guests. We expect that our guests will do likewise. We are sorry that the stay of these guests turned out badly. This is the only time that it has been necessary for us to withhold reimbursement of any part of a guest’s security deposit. Through VRBO, dozens of guests have stayed in our home without any problem. In fact, most of last year’s guests are returning this year and several have reserved for next year as well. We are very happy with their endorsement of our performance.

Oyster Reef is a beautiful home with fantastic views! It was nice to have a wood burning fireplace as the weather was cold for several days. We really loved the view of the beach and the Gulf of Mexico, looking through the oak trees to the water was simply amazing! I attended training @ Kessler AFB while we stayed there and my drive in to Biloxi every morning was perfect, loved the sunrise and the sunsets were also spectacular! Your home was very comfortable and your kitchen had everything we needed. It was nice to have the charcoal grill out on the back patio area too! Loved watching the lights from the shrimp boats at night, great view! Gayla was fantastic to work with! Thanks again, loved it!

Summer Respite

Oyster Reef was a wonderful get away. The house is lovely and everything we needed was provided. The owner's representative was most helpful and we immediately felt at home. The garden and house are well cared for and so enjoyable even in the heat of the summer. The weather was surprisingly good even in August. The only thing we could have wished for were bikes to ride but we plan to bring them with us next year! This will be a yearly get away for us.

Summer in the Pass

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed during June and loved the home. Our favorite part is the large screened porch that was used daily for morning coffee and watching the sunset . The beach is right across the street and the pool was used often during the warm afternoons. We have already made plans to return.

A great spot to spend your vacation.

Oyster Reef is a comfortable, modern, and private nest located near good shopping, restaurants, beaches and fishing. The cottage was well furnished and equipped for everything we needed. We enjoyed the gulf breezes that kept the temperature moderate and the shade of the live oaks.

A perfect place to spend time on the gulf...

Nice new, smaller home. Well appointed. Idea for two, or a smaller family. Very nice, wide, quiet beach and good walking sidewalk along the beach. The village of Pass Christian, and the surrounding area, is quiet, lightly populated, low keyed with a variety of casinos and very good restaurants within a few miles. The house is within 300ft. of the beach but back from the road far enough that there was minimal road noise. Good view of the Gulf out the front, and of the oyster boats, thru large live oaks. The only occasional distraction we noted was trains passing on the railway about 2 blocks behind the home. Nice, friendly neighbors.

Large, very nice shopping mall within 12 miles, very large Walmart within 6.

While the owners resides out of town, the local manageress lives within a mile or so and was very helpful.

With New Orleans & the French Quarter only 1 hour away and Casino Row only 20 minutes away in Biloxi, it's hard to remember that Relaxation is the main 'must do' at the beach here in Pass Christian. Walking is a popular activity here, as well as Sunset watching. Golf is a major attraction on the Gulf Coast, especially in winter, with 2 courses in Pass Christian, Timber Ridge and The Oaks, plus Grand Bear and many others within an easy drive.

Build your appetite for local shrimp, oysters or fish bought from the fishermen on their boats, whether cooked in your modern kitchen or at any of several local restaurants.

26 miles of open beaches give a beautiful entrance to several world class art Museums - Ohr O'keefe Museum, designed by Geary to showcase potter George Ohr in Biloxi and the Walter Anderson Museum in Ocean Springs.

Plan to visit lots of local restaurants as well as our Saturday Market in the Park for fresh produce and art gifts to take home.

So, if you want to spend time at the BlackJack tables or top name concert at a casino or just entertain your grandchildren in the pool or at the beach with sandcastle building, Pass Christian is the place and Oyster Reef is the beach house for you.

The high ceilings and tall doors and windows allow Gulf of Mexico breezes to cool the house with our mild climate. However, if the weather isn't perfect, we have central heat and air conditioning for year around comfort. The view is especially nice, since our home is raised a full story off the ground. It is all on one floor, once you're up there.
