We are extremely lucky to be located right across the street from the ocean with breaktaking views, and only steps to the famous Kehena Beach, one of the few remaining black sand beaches on Hawai'i Island.
Kehena Beach Estates is a magical neighborhood, where breezes are usually constant. You'll enjoy the tropical and fabulous ocean views from the living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining and even from the bathroom, with no other homes in front to obstruct your views.
With nearly perfect weather, the ocean lulls you to sleep at night on occasion, with the sound of rain drops which are most welcome in this area as we are on a catchment system and rely heavily on the rain (it wouldn't be lush without it), offering many variations of wind, a spectacular sunrise and sunset, and so much more from nature.
In its own microclimate, Kehena Kai offers an awesome package and we always look forward to the enjoyment of meeting you and hosting your next stay in East Hawai'i, and also sharing our piece of paradise with you.
Let us immerse you in unconditional hospitality and Aloha.

Purchased in 2012, we returned the home to its longtime purpose as a vacation getaway. We wanted to afford the opportunity to share the home, in this dream location with others. Hawaii has a consistent climate, and the neighborhood boast some of the friendliest and carefree people around. We hope to share our appreciation of Hawaii, the culture, and spirit of aloha with you. Our reviews validate some of the memories and friendships that have been created from previous guests. They checked-in as strangers and checked-out as our new friends.
Let us be your next host during your stay on the East side of Hawaii, and we'll guarantee our finest hospitality.
Kenny purchased this house in 2012
This property seems to have chosen us as opposed to the other way around. It is in a prime location, in a small beach community, across the street from the ocean, with all the pleasures of a paradise dream, and access to a black sand beach (clothing optional).
Kehena Kai is the closest, private, non-shared, vacation rental to the famous Kehena black sand Beach (No other homes or guests on the property :)
Kehena Kai is an eclectic, cozy, exotic vacation rental offering a rare opportunity to be only steps away from Kehena Black sand beach. The home also offers all the amenities that you need to relax and vacate. We are within a short driving distance to view the active volcano, lava flow, as well as the Kapoho hot ponds, lava tubes, Alahalanui State Park, and much more. There is a convenience store at the end of the road, as well as semi 'fast food' restaurant, and also Uncle Robert's Awa Bar, which features local entertainment and farmer's market on Wednesday nights 5pm-9pm and Friday nights after 6pm.
Imported from Bali, this home offers the kitchen, dining room, living room, bathroom, and master bedroom on four different levels-all with ocean views. In lieu of an air conditioning system, the bathroom, kitchen, living room and bedroom all have ceiling fans. Most of the structure and its beams are made of teak wood and the roofs of the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, boasts authentic Balinese roofs with ironwood shingles. The stone work in the interior and exterior are imported.
We fell in love with this home because of its proximity to the ocean, its Balinese charm, and the peace and serenity you feel once you step through the door. Every aspect of this home screams charm, and we are sure you will feel the same during your stay at Kehena Kai.
I know that rating a property can be very subjective. I picked Kehena Kai based on all of the 5 star reviews. We give it 3 star, just average. To us, a 5 star rating means experiencing that "wow" factor when you first enter a property. We found Kehena Kai was not what we expected even though the pictures are not misleading. We booked 5 nights but only stayed 1 night. I feel it is only fair to share our experience, so that it may help other VRBO customers decide.
Kenny and Karlos are nice people and very proud of Kehena Kai. However, they began our orientation by criticizing previous guests. We were warned not to ruin the stonework on the front steps with suitcases wheels, not to leave food out or eat pizza in bed because of red ant will take over. There are better ways to present cautionary measures then to bring up other guests ruining things and causing bug problems. Fix the stairs, spray for bugs and move on, don't blame. The birds, frogs and loud car noise (you are right on the main road) will keep you up all night unless you wear ear plugs. The catchment water filters were so dirty we did not use the shower for fear of mold in the water and hot tub water smelled and was so cloudy I would not even think of using it. A strict catchment and spa maintenance schedule is needed. The place was clean inside but the layout is more like being in a sailboat because you have to climb up and down companionway stairs to go from one room to the other. Kitchen is only large enough for 1 person, but well stocked. Biggest shock is that there is not one comfortable piece of furniture in the house except the queen bed. Sorry, but for us it had a creepy vibe and was a little too remote and off the grid. Be careful about going to the market at the end of the road. You will need mass amounts of bug spray, you may be better off driving 30 miles the grocery store in Pahoa. A lot of seedy characters there, and we found out there is a real drug problem on this of the island.
For us we looked at it like a day trip to experience the tropical side of the island. We love Princeville in Kauai, driving the road to Hana on Maui and enjoyed the beauty of our drive to Kehena beach, but it is not for everyone.
We just got back from our stay on the big island and this was definitely one of our highlights! This house is perfect for a couple wanting to get away from the touristy areas of the island. You have this entire beautiful home all to yourself with a perfect amount of room and open air environment. The bonus being that the beautiful Pacific is right across the street and the breaking waves, the ocean air, and the fantastic bed will help you sleep like a baby!
We only had 2 days to enjoy this place, but would definitely love to stay longer for our next trip! Karlos and Kenny are wonderful hosts, very welcoming and make you feel at home.
The property is very secluded, but day trips to Hilo or Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park are easy drives and you can come back to this beautiful property and relax in the hot tub and enjoy the rest of your evening just listening to the waves or the frogs (which we both found relaxing rather than annoying). There is also a farmer's market down the street we were able to enjoy that had fresh, local produce, music and probably the best pineapple we had during our entire trip!
I would definitely recommend this property for anyone looking to stay in a quiet, secluded, tropical home with the ideal amenities to make any romantic getaway perfect!
Loved our entire 8 days at Kehena Kai! We felt welcome and very much at home right from the moment we were greeted by Kenny and Karlos upon our arrival. The thoughtful details, beautiful furnishings, decorating, and landscaping along with the wonderful location of the property made it "Home". Not only is it a clean and well equipped property, but it is also a very romantic property. Great place to find each other again. We were so sad when we had to leave, but have promised ourselves that we will be back....SOON!
Really miss the rainfall shower, the gorgeous sunrises, watching the geckos and the evening serenades from nature (I had to record the ocean, bird, and critter sounds to take back with me). The property might be quite private, but there are wonderful neighbours and friendly local folks to meet if you just take the time to stop and say hello. They are more than happy to let you know about some of the lesser known special local spots to visit. We enjoyed all the activities other tourists might do, such as visiting the farmers market in Hilo, the sunset on top of Mauna Kea (spectacular), and going to the national park at Volcano. What was really special, though, were the local activities such as snorkeling at the tide pools at Kapoho, soaking our bodies in the warm pool at Ahalanui park, the local farmers markets, and watching the whales and dolphins right from the house. Even the star gazing was amazing, just sitting out on the front patio after dark. We were so busy enjoying the area and relaxing at "home", that we didn't even use the hot tub, although I do recommend that area of the garden for reading. If you stay at this property, make sure you book a massage with Dawn Marie. She not only has a wonderful (not a light) touch but also is a life coach, so takes the time to find out what you and your body are in need of.
This is property is not for those who want the resort lifestyle, you will need a vehicle to get to most places.
That being said, for those who would prefer a special and memorable vacation experience, somewhere romantic where you can pamper yourself and your partner, this is the place!
Once again, Kenny and Karlos, mahalo loa nui for sharing this home with us.
Brenda and Rod
Great house with a spectacular view and feels very private. Carlos and Kenny are awesome! It's perfect if you want to be secluded and surrounded by beauty. You can hear the ocean from your bed.
We have used VRBO probably a dozen times and this was BY FAR our BEST experience!! The owners Kenny & Karlos were the best owners I have ever worked with. We liked them so much we spent the week joking about how we needed to find an excuse to get them to come back. Lol The house was amazing. The cleanest house I have ever rented. It is perfect. It is beautiful. The hot tub is very private. We loved it! We could not say one bad thing about our entire stay. It was the best vacation of our lives. Life changing. The Neighborhood is so laid back and friendly we didn't want to leave. When we booked our trip we spent weeks looking for a house away from the tourists that we could enjoy a week by the ocean just the two of us. And this was the perfect choice. We woke up every morning before the sun and sat out front to watch the sunrise. It was magical. Words can not describe it. We watched whales and their babies jump out of the water right next to the shore while we sat in our lawnchairs. At night you can hear them come past near the shore. It was the coolest thing ever. I can't believe how many whales we saw during our week there. The tide pools and the hot pond down the road were amazing. We would go float around in the hot pond every morning while we decided what we wanted to do for the day. It was like snorkeling in a pond sized bath tub full of amazing fish. But my favorite thing of all was the people in this area. so friendly and they make you feel at home. I encourage you to get to know people while you are there. Step out of your comfort zone and you will be glad you did. We met some amazing people with amazing stories. Never judge a book by its cover. Because you just might miss an amazing story. I literally cried as I closed the gate on our way back to the airport. Even after 9 days on the island we were not ready to leave. So many things we didn't have enough time to do. We will most definitely be back. I highly recommend this place!!!!!!!!
We spend six days at Kehena Kai and was it the best rental accommodation we ever stayed in. The house and property absolutely exceeded our expectations. We felt comfortable the minute we walked in and the owner was on site upon arrival to give us a tour and made us feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend this house to a couple who is looking for a perfect romantic getaway. The property is perfectly maintained, private, tastefully funished. The location is excellent and right near the beach; we could even see whales from the front entrance seating area. The owners Kenny and Karlos arranged our wedding ceremony during our stay and made it an unforgettable moment for us to remember. Thank you both so much;-). We made the mistake of only booking 6 days, so we will return to Kehena Kai to spend our vacation this year.
Kehena Kai is less than a minute walk away from the famous Kehena Black sand beach where spinner dolphins often join you in the ocean. Humpback whales on the other hand are seasonal, and tend to frolic during migration season, (December through April). If you are lucky, you can also hear them playing in the ocean near the property.
Conveniences near Kehena Kai also include, Uncle Robert's Awa Bar at the end of the road which offers local entertainment, a local take out/dine out restaurant, and a convenient store.
East Hawaii also boast some of the best oxygen on the planet, as well as an active Volcano, historic trails, the largest Sea Mountain (Maunakea), the most massive mountain in the world (Maunaloa), and lush vegetation.
