While Florida plays host to Disney World, Miami, and the Florida Keys, Apalachicola boast its own style and is laid back and unpretentious. Enjoy Oysters ten feet away at a local Raw Bar, or walk ten minutes to enjoy the local culture and restaurants. The real attraction to Apalachicola is a town that embodies Florida in the 50's.
Located on the Apalachicola River within close proximity to Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, the views from every window are breathtaking. The front screened porch offers close up constantly changing scenery including dolphins, turtles, birds and an occasional alligator! Let us know if we can arrange to have a fishing guide pick you up from your houseboat!
My 2 friends and I just returned from a week's stay on this houseboat. First, and foremost, we were interested in exploring Apalachicola, a much quieter and different view of Florida. Staying on a houseboat just made our trip far more interesting and fun. We were literally steps away from restaurants, liquor stores, shopping and of course, the river. We spent lots of time wandering the streets of the town, visited 3 of the most beautiful beaches (Mexico Beach, St. Joe's, and St George) and wasted 1/2 a day searching for an apiary. 2 of us tried to eat oysters every day, and at night we hurried home so we could listen to the tree frog chorus. At one point, I said, "Everyone in the restaurant is looking at us in " our" houseboat." My friend captured the whole experience with the following quote. "Everyone wants to be us."
Vacation highlight- Eco tour with Captain Jimmy Maxwell - lots of wildlife and five generations of stories. Invigorating 1 hour horseback ride on the beach with Haley from Broke a Toe. And "life's a beach" at St. George Island.
But more about the Reelaxation- did I mentionion the deck and the screened in porch...and the breezes off the water? The location was just steps away from restaurants, shops and music, but it was the Reelaxation that was timeless. The kitchen was easy to work in. The boat was very clean. Lots of ceiling fans to move the air . Great bed and shower water pressure, furniture comfortable. My one personal peeve was the very loud wind chimes on the unoccupied houseboat next door clanking out the sounds of nature!
Long live Apalachicola! Long live the Reelaxation!
And I've had some good ones. I had high expectations based on pictures, reviews, previous visits to Apalachicola and this houseboat exceeded them. Ultra clean and efficient, stocked with everything we needed. King size bed was so comfy and the fishing lodge decor was tastefully done. Waking up in the morning to the birds, boats, fish, turtles and unconfirmed gator sighting was amazing. We spent most of our time sitting on the deck but it was a quick and scenic drive over to the beaches of St. George. Amazing food at Up The Creek, Boss Oyster, Owl Cafe and a really fun happy hour at the Bowery Station, all within walking distance. This little town closes down at night pretty early but it's pleasantly humming with people and music until 9pm. We're already planning our return visit.
The Reelaxation was just that; really relaxing and even more so with a reel in my hand off the back of the boat. Stepping inside of this little moored houseboat will certainly take you aback at the size and design. For two, it is perfectly roomy and the "cabin" design and finishings are PERFECT. You could chose to do nothing but stay on the boat and be splendidly comfortable. As mentioned elsewhere, the WiFi is slow, but please do not come to work and waste this opportunity. Apalachicola is not a very big place at all but you can comfortably walk and see everything this little town has to offer from the house boat. The restaurant/raw bar, Up The Creek, that the Reelaxation is moored beneath is a delicious and laid back find. The Hole in the Wall Raw Bar is just that on the other end of town. It is quaint and generous with their oyster catch. If you are seeking a more fine dining experience walk thru town and give the Owl Cafe a chance. The Owl has a wonderful Sunday Brunch but you need a reservation. A walk thru town in the evening, especially on the weekend, is full of music and fellowship. Upon leaving Reelaxation and Apalach you will feel like you're leaving the past, but with the fondest of memories. We will be back!
Great fun! One of the cleanest VRBO places we've stayed (including large, expensive homes). Everything you'd need for an interesting and different place to stay. Walking distance to all the great restaurant s in town. Internet service quite slow, if you need to work on-line, but loved everything else! Doug & Carol.
My husband and I booked 3 nights on "Reelaxation" in January and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Reelaxation is so roomy and comfortable and provided a unique way to stay at Apalachicola! It is within easy walking distance to downtown and right next door to a great seafood restaurant. We knew when we booked that this time of year was cool so we didn't get to sit outside on the deck, but we could see the boats going by and enjoy the scenery from inside. We were not lacking for anything on the boat during our visit and thought the furnishings added to the casual feel of the houseboat. Thank you so much for a great first visit to Apalachicola--we hope to be back again sometime!!!
Apalachicola is world renowned for our Oysters & fresh seafood. We also boast an unmatched shallow water fishery with our healthy estuary and good offshore fishing as well. For the best fishing guide contact Capt. Jimmy Maxwell, Backwater Guide Service at 850-899-0063. St. George Island is our beach - it is unspoiled and low key family friendly. Visit our many restaurants - many will prepare your cleaned catch - and enjoy our local shopping district.
