Our family is the third generation of the original owners, my grandparents Louis and Elizabeth DeGregorio. My grandfather was a carpenter and built the original cabin in 1932, the first home in the Drakes Estates neighborhood.
Michael O'Looney purchased this cabin in 1932
Years ago when a seven-mile stretch along the Russian River from Rio Nido to Monte Rio was known as 'the Irish Riviera,'my grandfather, an Italian carpenter from San Francisco, was the first to purchase a tract of river front just a mile or so from the resort town of Guerneville. That was back in 1932. Over the decades the cabin he built has undergone several dramatic changes. In the 1955 flood, the original 3-story cabin, with expansive decks & multiple guest rooms, disappeared in the torrential flood waters. We built another cabin in its place and anchored it around two towering redwood trees. Then, after the 1997 flood, we raised the cabin to preserve it from future floods and, in the process added a cathedral ceiling and two new decks.
Today, our cabin sits on a knoll above the river, just 1/2 mile downstream from Korbel Winery. Decks extend out the front and back of the second-story structure where the great room and 2-bedrooms and bathroom are located. The cabin's rustic ambiance is heightened by knotty pine walls which, in the great room, rise up 21 feet. In summer, the cabin is well-insulated to keep guests cool and in the fall and early spring a woodstove fireplace makes the cabin warm & cozy. From the back deck, one can sit in the shade beneath a canopy of bay tress and redwoods and look down upon our private beach. The front deck provides a view of the vineyards and the hills beyond that rise up on both sides of the river. Please come and enjoy De's Cottage a river cabin in the Heart of Wine Country.
"We enjoyed every moment of our stay here--great cabin, beautiful setting, perfect weather...who could ask for more? We'll be back every chance we get."
My husband and I and our 3 children stayed for 5 days. The cabin is in great shape and very charming with balconies and patios everywhere. We felt as if we were in a treehouse as we sipped coffee in the morning outside in a sea of green. Despite the limited space, there was room for everyone with the bunk room. The cabin has everything we needed for cooking. There is no A/C, but it is not needed. We loved paddling up and down the Russian River in the canoe and kayak. The only minor annoyance was the skylight above our bed...we woke up with the sun! However, this turned out to be a good thing, as we woke up fairly early to natural sunlight and were ready to go. We loved the area, and particularly enjoyed the historical tour at Korbel, along with a day of wine tasting elsewhere. The small town of Geurneville has a hippie, laid back vibe and was well equipped for all our grocery needs as well as dinner out 2 nights. I highly recommend Rio Nido Roadhouse for a burger and beer and a plunge in the pool if the kids should so desire. It is a basic cabin, as advertised, but with tons of charm, very kept up, and lots of great amenities!
The owner has really put a lot of effort into making his home feel like your home. From the fresh towels to the stocked kitchen to the recreational amenities, anything we could ever need was provided. It was wonderful to be able to have direct access to the river so we could come up to the house whenever we needed. We only stayed a couple of nights, but look forward to a much longer stay next time, as we didn't want to leave!
We enjoyed the nice kitchen facilities, great room, and upper deck. There is a quiet beach within a 5 minute walk that is perfect for kids.
I can't say enough good things about De's cottage. My wife and I just spent the weekend there with our 2 and 5 year old children and we had the most wonderful time - really, it was the best family vacation we've ever had! The cottage is so charming and lovely and has everything you need. All of the windows and sky lights made us feel like we were in a tree house :) The boys loved runnig down to the basement to swing on the indoor swing and riding around on the little kiddie toys. The best part, though, was cruising around the river on the canoe and finding our own little slice of paradis on the river. I never would have guessed that a vacation with two small children could be relaxing but this one was - the boys played all day in the sand and water while my wife and I took turns relaxing and going for swims. We hope to come back next year and stay for a whole week!
Our family of 4 and 1 dog just returned from a 4 day stay at De's Cottage. We have used vrbo about a dozen times now, and this was by far my best pick. Beginning with the excellent communication I had with Michael leading up to our stay. Everything that we could ever need or want was there at our disposal. The house was tidy and adorable. I fell in love with the neighborhood and met the neighbors when I would walk the dog. We had absolutely no problem there as the yard and house were dog proof. My kids could play in the yard or on the decks or in their little bunk bed room. It was small, but somehow felt roomy. We loved our practically private beach. I could just feel the warmth and the love in this house. No one wanted to leave and we will be coming again.
This is a beautiful cabin with great river access. sits back from the river so you are shaded from the hot summer heat and protected from the loud river rafters on the summer weekends. The cabin has a great kitchen, with lots of space for our group to enjoy. We cooked five times in this cabin and there were plenty of utensils and amenities to make a comfortable meal. Although there is only one bathroom, the access to the outdoor deck, and the private door separating the toilet/shower from the sink really simplified the group situation. We look forward to coming back.
