Ponte di Castelvecchio Villa Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms, sleeps 6, 2 bathrooms

La Spinosa is a traditional farmhouse owned by a British artist. Restored sensitively, it provides summer and autumn accommodation for 6 people. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen. There is a beautiful large traditional stone terrace and pergola for al fresco dining, an 11 meter private pool and extensive terraces with olive and fruit trees. La Spinosa enjoys a stunning panoramic view of the Tuscan hill village of Castelvecchio di Pescia and the countryside. Access and parking is easy and although secluded, three excellent restaurants can be reached within a ten minute drive, of which one can be walked to in ten minutes through lovely woods. By car Lucca is 35 minutes and Florence, Pisa and the beach resort of Viareggio are each 1 hour. La Spinosa is most suitable for couples and families. Facilities include an excellent DVD & book collection, high chair, cot and stair gate. La Spinosa is the perfect place for the perfect getaway

Walking : For those particularly interested in a walking holiday, La Spinosa, in the foothills of the Tuscan Appenines, is wonderfully situated. There are walking trails of varying difficulty and length throughout the area.

Support and advice: Paul, our English house manager, lives in the next village. He is a fount of information on buying food, restaurant bookings, walking trails and tourist attractions (both on and off the beaten track). Vaughan Grylls purchased this villa in 2003

Why Vaughan Grylls chose Ponte di Castelvecchio

Perfectly situated to fly to ( 1 hour from Florence and Pisa airports), away from it all, yet near very good restaurants and cultural attractions.

What makes this villa unique

The cock crows, heralding the dawn,

The church bell tolls, announcing the hour,

The night-watching dogs begin to bark at one another,

The sun appears gently over the ridge of the mountain,

The day has started.

The day is always at its best first thing,

Everything is fresh as the woodpecker claims its territory.

Up above, the honey buzzard circles for its prey,

From its vantage point, the Tuscan farmhouse on the ridge,

Observes the waking houses' smoke fires drifting through the valley,

The first warm, golden yellow rays of sun penetrate,

Through the old, varnished shutters,

All is silent.

Far off, one see the beautiful hilltop village,

Sheltered by cypress trees, giving the place its identity,

One begins to hear the splutter of a three-wheeled van.

As the workman begins his journey to work,

The day has begun.

Martin Shaw.

Guestbook comments from the manager

It was our second stay at La Spinosa and we enjoyed it again very much. Freshly picked fruits in the morning, a refreshing jump in the pool and a glass of wine with the lovely view from the terrace - what else do you need for a perfect day?

We have rented many holiday homes in Europe but none as lovely as La Spinosa. Both the house and the setting were wonderful and we wanted for nothing. La Spinosa offers complete privacy and tranquility but without feeling remote. It is lovely to look across to Castelvecchio, hear the bells striking the hour and distant voices floating across the valley. We enjoyed walking into Castlevecchio for an ice cream or evening meal at 'La Pieve' or driving the short distance to ' Sandrino's', just below the village, which serves excellent and reasonably priced pasta. The pool, reliable wi fi connection and good food meant that our teenagers were just as content as we were. After an evening meal we often enjoyed watching a film chosen from the extensive DVD collection. We were sad to leave but our recording of the cicadas which we now use as a morning alarm serves as a happy reminder of our time in Tuscany.

Very charming

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at La Spinosa - although the pool was very, very Cold (16 degrees) only the last two days we could enjoy the pool (20 degrees max).

The view is absolutely beautiful, the garden well kept and the house lovely, charming, clean and functional. The area very quiet except from the village dogs barking :-) and the charming churchbells always telling us what time it was :-)

What a shame that we just had one week in this house before we went on to France.

If I may come with a little note - it would have been nice if you had some relax chairs for outside at the tiles. The bench ok for eating, the sunbeds ok for laying - but we just missed some relax chairs to sit in reading a book while enjoying a cup of tea/coffee or a glass of local good wine. Everything else was just perfect!

You and Paul made us feel so welcome :-) and I really don't have any negative things to say about our stay in your lovely Italian house.

La Spinosa

  • 5 of 5

We visited La Spinosa late in the season arriving at about 4.30 after experiencing for the first time the winding, and at times slightly scary, drive up the mountain. We were greeted by Paul, who looks after the house wonderfully, and the log burning stove was already making the house warm and welcoming. The house is simply but comfortably furnished with everything you need.

We had been advised to buy provisions in Pescia on the way up which was good advice as there is only a small shop, at the back of the local cafe, in Castellvecchio which just sells the basics. We ate at the restaurant at the end of the road on the first night which is really close and easy to get to. Some guests had apparently complained about the grumpy waitress but we did not find her too bad and when we ate there again on Saturday it was full of local people and the

waitress on duty was charming and smiley. The food both times we ate there was great.

The next day we started by exploring the garden and enjoying the wonderful sculptures in it, then walking to Castelvecchio for a coffee which was a gentle pleasure. Braving the journey down the mountain to Pescia seemed a major achievement but after a day or two we got the hang of hurling the Fiat Panda round the bends and ignoring the hooting Italians, who try to join you in the back seat.

Highlights included two visits to Lucca. The sun shone the second time so we were able to cycle round the walls which was brilliant as was the Mozart and Puccini concert concert performed by two very young local opera singers at the church of San Giovanni.

Sunday lunch at the farmhouse, at the very top of the opposite hill, was a highlight. Just when you think you cannot eat any more another delicious course arrives and somehow you find room for it. Paul booked this for us and it was the perfect way to spend a rather wet Sunday.

La Spinosa out of season must be a very different experience to a Summer visit. We explored the local area and historic towns, had lots of good food and wine and read our books, or watched some of the amazingly varied DVD collection, in front of the log burner. A very relaxing and peaceful holiday.

An Authentic Tuscan experience

  • 5 of 5

When we were planning our holiday in Tuscany, at a first glance La Spinosa was just the kind of retreat we were looking for. And it delivered. It was just as beautiful as we had hoped for, and just as authentic as we wanted it to be. Location was idyllic and you just can't tire yourself with looking at the beautiful view from the terrace.

One of the perks on the location was, that even though we were in complete privacy , and far from the hazzle of big cities, we actually weren't really that far from any of them. Trips to Pisa, Lucca, Florence etc. were really easy to execute. And the Wi-fi at the villa helped alot in planning them.

We can recommend La Spinosa to anyone, regardless of age, who enjoys peace and quiet, and wants to see Tuscany as it really is at its best.

Bellissima- A Tuscan (re) treat!

  • 4 of 5

Polly and Vaughan

For our first visit to Tuscany a real delight! We looked at a number of villas and eventually settled on La Spinosa and we are so glad we did. After the hustle and bustle of England we found tranquility just sitting out and soaking in the view. It was so peaceful.

In the evenings we tried our hand at some rustic Tuscan recipes, along with Chianti of course and relaxed talking around the log burner, really cosy.

Italy has long been a desired destination and my wife and I have been reading many books on the Tuscan way of life and dreamed. Now we have lived the dream, at least for two weeks!

La Spinosa is ideally located as a base to explore, we visited Florence a number of times as well as Lucca and the Garzoni Gardens nearby in Collodi. We found the train service to be very good to get to Florence.

There is so much to do and see and not enough time!

Thank you for letting us stay and we will be making plans to return!

A perfect setting for a lazy, late summer holiday

  • 5 of 5

We were both delighted to celebrate a special wedding anniversary week at "La Spinosa", in it's idyllic location. The house is very comfortable and full of character, and the garden, stunning. Picking ripe figs from the tree each day was a treat! Having soaked up the sun by the pool for three days, we thought we ought to get out and about a bit; so visited Lucca and Montecatini, on separate days. They are both not too far to drive to, and each has a very different and distinct character, and is well worth visiting.

Even in heavy rain and thunderstorms we were happy being at "La Spinosa"; working our way through it's particularly large DVD film collection!

We would both love to stay there again.

Owner's Response: Sounds as though you had a wonderful, relaxing getaway with just the right balance between lazing around and sightseeing. And the figs are rather good when ripe aren't they? We are quite a bit proud of La Spinosa's DVD collection - all those classic films and more. We would love to have you back!

La Spinosa is within an hour's drive of Florence, Pisa and the famous seaside resort of Viareggio with its annual Puccini summer festival at Torre de Lago. The beautiful walled city of Lucca is just over half an hour away.

The hill village of Castlevechio ,which La Spinosa overlooks' is the central village of ten picturesque hill villages which form the Dieci Castella. All are in easy reach and a visit to each is highly recommended. Castelvecchio itself boasts the Dieci Castella's tenth century Romanesque 'cathedral' while the village's church sits above a recently discovered and restored crypt whose walls are covered with 16th century frescoes.

Castelvecchio has three very good yet reasonably priced restaurants, a small shop, a post office and a bar with a view to die for. Walking (ten minutes) or driving (three) to the village is a treat as the road winds through beautiful chestnut woods with lovely views. Indeed walking anywhere in the Dieci Castella is highly recommended.
