Willmar Cottage Rental Photos and Description

This lake home is located in the W Meadowbrook area on the MN side of Big Stone Lake. It features a 30' glassed in porch, 3 sleeping areas, stone fireplace and 2 additional guest cottages. It has been redone and designed with an eye toward cottage style. Hand painted Scandinavian art by Gold Medalist Rosemaller Karen Jensen is featured throughout.

Walk up to the french doors and see all the way through to the water. A rosemalled staircase, and striking wood interiors (incl bullnose) make for an inviting place for family gatherings. Shaker style kitchen cabinets and a claw foot tub in the main bathroom lend a vintage feel.

The open floor plan conveys a sense of ease and sophistication and the character of this home is emphasized by the quality and style of furnishings.

An outdoor bathhouse/bathroom provides a whimsical spot to shower after swimming.

So if you are looking for a great place for your whole family to come and make memories, share a meal, take a nap or just sit and enjoy the breeze in the porch, this may be the getaway for you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Enjoyed our family celebration weekend at the lake so much! Plenty of room for extended family, while not being on top of each other. Creek and lakeshore beach, volleyball, swimming, fishing, scrabble, campfire, outdoor shower/bathroom (perfect for after swimming), kayaking, local farm produce (Lismore Farms is well worth the trip), golf and a local swimming pool that is full of small town fun. We'll be back, for sure!!!

What a beautiful home and setting—just as pictured and more! Our stay was brief, but early morning coffee at the end of the dock and feeling the sun's warmth was beyond description. A place I’d love to be every morning! I brought my book along, but was too captured by the beauty of the place, the cozy accommodations, the wildlife, and the many changing panoramas of the lake to read it! The serenity of the place is “just what the doctor ordered” if you are looking for beauty, peace and quiet and great accomodations.

Disappointed to say the least

  • 1 of 5
This cabin is definitely not the cleanest. The quote from the owner was that we left it cleaner than it was when we came. One of us woke up swollen from dust mites and/or cat hair. One of us woke up with tons of spider bits. The owner showed up to clean things out of the refrigerator the second day we were there. We were originally told we could bring 17 people and then it changed to 13 and we were charged more for the extra (after being told we wouldn’t be.) The internet says it’s pet friendly but we were told no pets. The internet says there is a Kuerig coffeemaker, but there isn’t. Recommendation: Get the stuff in writing before you go here because the owners change the amount owed as time goes on! My parents ended up paying $500 more than the original quote.

Very relaxing place....

  • 5 of 5
We spent a week in Aug of 2014 at the cottage. It was one of the most relaxing weeks we've had in a long time...a much needed break from the stresses of work. The cabin is very nice and spacious. We spent most of the week alone but our daughter and friend spent two nights in the loft. My husband fished and I read, we watched TV and just hung out. We found a few local spots to eat and grilled several nights. We took advantage of the outdoor shower which is great when it's warm outside.

It is with worth noting that there are a lot of antiques and some breakable items sitting around so be aware if you have little ones and there is also a very open staircase...not great for toddlers or small children. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, and the stove is great as is the grill plate for breakfasts.

The neighbors on the south are very helpful if you need any advice about anything or help figuring out the satellite TV..thanks John for the help that first night we were there. He also gave some suggestions for breakfast...we tried one Big Stone , SD cafe....very interesting, very small town with good food...the Cottage Inn Cafe on highway 12. We also tried a local place in Beardsley...we were hoping for omlettes but that's only on Sundays...we had great food though on the Saturday we visited. We also ate at Lakewood in Ortonville which is excellent and MacDaddys in Big Stone, SD.

The cabin has a stackable washer/dryer which is nice for small loads. This property is also good for morning walks. We are familiar with this area so we knew not to expect a clean clear lake at this time of year...it was extremely green but we weren't there to swim so it was not a problem for us. The dock is a great place to sit and enjoy the lake.

Happy Iowa mom

We vacationed at my father in laws cabin down the road from the whimsical cabin for years. We always cleaned and mowed the grass before leaving. When I was looking into cabin rentals and came across the whimsical cabin I was so excited! I was hoping for a nice cabin where we could all relax and have fun. It was better then I expected! Nice and roomy, the kitchen has all you need to cook, having a washer and dryer was very nice! It was nice to not to mow or clean when we left the cabin, and coming home with less laundry was great too! I highly recommend the whimsical cottage for anyone looking for a family get away!

Our stay at Meadowbrook

  • 2 of 5
We loved the area of MN and SD border. It had tons of wildlife and scenery. Great golf courses, nice antique shops and good eateries. The cabin was nicely decorated and loaded with good reading material. We loved the large windowed area looking out at the lake area. What we didn't like was the swimming area. When we were there the water was like a thick, slimy, slough that stunk like sewage. We were very disappointed that we were not informed of this issue. Loved the cabin and the area but NOT a good place for swimming when we were there.

Owner's Response: So sorry you had algae problems....this has not been a big problem for us, tho we get about a half dozen random bad days or so per summer. Wish we could control the weather:)

wedding weekend

  • 5 of 5
We were in Ortonville for one of our friends weddings and decided to rent a cabin instead of getting a hotel. There were about 8 of us who stayed and it eas perfect. There was lots of room and plenty of places to sleep. The beds were comfortable snd the place was very clean. We had so many wedding activities we didn't get to enjoy this beautiful cabin as much as we would have liked to but we are hoping to go back and spend time enjoying this great place. Thanks Sue for providing such a great vacation spot!
