Nerja is one of the most attractive resorts on the Costa Del Sol. Many of its beaches are set in small coves. The old Spanish quarter with its winding pedestrianised whitewashed streets is a delight to visit. There are many lovely small interesting shops in Nerja and many happy hours can be spent wandering around window shopping.
The Balcon de Europa is the local meeting place for both Spanish residents and visitors alike. Most evenings it serves as a gathering point and lots of interesting things tend to happen here. Saturday night is particularly enjoyable with live folk bands, clowns and mime artists. You can also have your portrait painted. There are many little bars around serving either coffee or drinks. The tourist office is just to the right of the Balcon de Europa. You can also hire a horse and carriage from here that will take you around the Nerja area.To the side of the Balcon de Europa you will find the XV11 century El SalvadChurch. An ancient cannon points out to sea.
Situated just below the Balcon on the eastern side you will find the sheltered relatively hidden sandy Calahonda Beach. This is a small sheltered cove, protected by the rocks behind. Umbrellas and sun beds are available for hire.Nerja enjoys a good all year round temperature and is protected and sheltered by the Sierra Tejada Mountain range. In comparison to our winter, Nerja enjoys warm sunny days in which you will find yourself in shorts and T shirts. These clear blue skies are a welcome relief from the dark grey skies here in the U.K..
Nerja Caves are magnificent and house the biggest grotto in Europe. The stalagmites which were formed over millions of years ago are breath taking. A visit to the Caves is essential. An orchestra and opera perform in the caves during the “Nerja Caves Festival” in August.
