Cattail Creek is a long-time favorite among vacationers, prized for the magnificent beauty of the creek that runs throughout the mountain. Cattail Creek is located in Yancey County, the highest elevation in North Carolina and enjoys average temperatures in the mid-80s in the summer and lows in the 50s. Our mountain home has three bedrooms and can sleep six comfortably, seven in a trundle bed. All rooms are creekside, and downstairs has floor-to-ceiling windows which offer expansive views of the creek. There are many vistas from which to enjoy the creek including a private overlook, with views of a waterfall. Above the house is a private picnic area with a stone grill, picnic table, and fire ring. Our home is very comfortable and beautifully decorated with indigenous art and furnishings.
I live in Tallahassee, Florida where I work with homeless veterans.
Wendy Hollady purchased this house in 1990
Although the house was built in 1990, it is the site of a former cabin owned by my parents, and grandparent's before them. Every summer beginning in the late 50's, we would spend a memorable summer in Cattail by our beloved mountain creek. My father and both grandfathers were Methodist ministers, and considered this place 'holy ground.' My father named the house 'Shalom', which means peace.
Renters tell me that our house feels more like a home than a rental. I have a large library of books which you are welcome to borrow. The creek is an outdoor playground for kids and you will never tire of the sound of a waterfall lulling you to sleep at night. Above the house is a private picnic area with a stone grill, table, and fire ring. Trout fishing, tubing, campfires, and hiking are all available on the property, but the location is ideally situated for day trips to Mt. Mitchell, Grandfather's Mountain, whitewater rafting, the Biltmore House in Asheville, etc, all under an hour from the house.
We recently vacationed at "Shalom" and had a wonderful time. The house and property are beautiful and well-maintained. The "roaring creek" is delightful with its waterfalls and pools. Our grandchildren very much enjoyed playing in and exploring the creek. There are a number of ways to take nice walks and hikes from the property so that it is not necessary to drive to another location to hike. Working with Wendy was delightful as well. These were all selling points for us when we rented Shalom for a week and we were very pleased with our stay. The only negative thing was leaving to go home and we look forward to returning soon. We’ve vacationed and rented properties in North Carolina and many other places, and this was one of our nicest times. We highly recommend staying at Shalom.
Our family spent a couple of days at this beautiful cabin. We had a wonderful time playing in the creek / stream. The home is truly a treasure. It was soothing to fall asleep to the sound of the water. The home is very well furnished, clean, and equipped with everything we needed. It was a pleasure to communicate with the owner.
Our long weekend at Shalom House made for a great weekend getaway with family and friends. Wendy was the perfect host, communicating promptly before our arrival with travel information and checking in on our comfort afterwards. The house was beautifully appointed, very comfortable and has clearly been a special family home for generations, offers total privacy from the community, and surrounded by waterfalls of Cattail Creek. Great walking trails, hiking, porch sitting or trout fishing. We'll be back!
The house was perferct for our family. It had everything that we wanted. Wendy, the owner was great to communicate.
We will come back!!!
We have never spent a vacation in a cabin in the mountains! We had no idea what we were missing! This cabin is fully furnished beautifully, the creek is the most relaxing noise I have yet to hear! We would eat with the windows open to just hear it. We made a fire in the fire pit and played with snow as well! I highly reccomend staying at Wendys cabin! The location is very central if you want to visit Ashville or boone! Great vacation for all of us! Thank you.
Cattail was an amazing find for us. We have three boys 15, 13, & 9 and everyone said they want to come back! The house is more beautiful than the pictures depict. The area was secluded but still close enough to pop into town for dinner. We played for countless hours in the creek, went horseback riding, fly fishing, and tackled hike after hike. There were several waterfalls within 45 minute drive that were spectacular and more trailheads than we could tackle in our week's stay. The leaves turning each day were our morning gift when we had breakfast on the porch. Thank you again for sharing your home! We will be back soon!
