Aghios Nikolaos is a great place to take a boat trip to the famous Blue Caves, the brilliant shades of turquoise have to be seen to be believed, caused by the brilliant sunshine on bright white limestone combined with purple seaweed and the deep water, this is a trip not to be missed. Further afield a trip around the coast to Navagio (Shipwreck Bay) is a must. One of the most photographed bays in the world it is also one of the top beaches as voted by Conde Nast Traveller.
The nearby island of Kefalonia is only nine miles away and a car ferry departs from Aghios Nikolaos twice daily, tickets are available in the port.
There are some excellent tavernas in these villages, a warm welcome awaits at Alexandra (Babby's) in Maries and the chic Sophia’s in Volimes is a treat. Closer to home La Storia taverna in Aghios Nikolas has a superb setting right on the beach and is always popular. On the road approaching Aghios Nikolaos you will pass the Mahogani Art Café perfect for coffee and cocktails where you will also find many paintings and sculptures by Sophia, the owner, some of which may be for sale.
Take a drive south along the coast road to the crystal waters of Makris Gialis beach where it is possible to swim around to the caves. The little hamlet of Micro Nisi has a tiny harbour and a Venetian watch tower. There is a great taverna here overlooking the inlet and also close by is Vardiola (Nico's) taverna with fantastic views of the coastline.
A visit to Zakynthos town is a must, although almost totally destroyed in the earthquake of 1953 the town has been sensitively rebuilt with many of its beautiful Venetian buildings replicated. Start at the harbour and wander back through the chaotic maze of streets where fishmongers and colourful fruit and vegetable shops sit comfortably with boutiques, banks, bakeries and cafes.
On the outskirts of Zakynthos there is a waterpark and a trip to the far south to Keri is worth a visit for wonderful views of Marathonissi island also the national park of the Gerakas peninsula is recommended, it is worth mentioning however that these areas are always very busy in the peak summer months.
