The Old Post Office is located in the picturesque village of Speldhurst, just ten minutes away from Royal Tunbridge Wells. The village itself offers a 13th Century church with the famous Burne Jones and William Morris stained glass windows, the Speldhurst circular walk, and Michelin award-winning food at the George & Dragon. This traditional 13th Century Inn with roaring log fires and dramatic oak beams, also boasts a picturesque garden, making it the perfect venue for any time of year. They sell local bitters and good wines, and local seasonal food simply cooked, using the bounty of local produce from the surrounding areas. As a result they had the honour of winning 2 Bib Gourmand's from Michelin and the Alistair Sawdays, Local, Seasonal Pub of the Year Award. Outside the village, it’s only a short drive to all that Royal Tunbridge Wells has to offer, the only spa town in the south east of England where you can still taste the spring water today.

Delightful Cottage in Centre of Village

Sue22 Cheshire
Review Submitted: September 10, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
The cottage is small and cosy - perfect for two - and had everything we needed for our five-day break.

Everywhere was spotlessly clean when we arrived. Bedding, towels, a tea towel and loo rolls were provided. The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of storage space for our clothes, etc. The kitchen was very well equipped and we cooked full meals most evenings. There was plenty of hot water and the shower worked perfectly!

As planned before we arrived, we were out all day every day so the lack of outside space was not a problem. The cottage is at a road junction but we did not find the traffic troublesome, despite the fact that our own home is in a very quiet spot with no passing traffic.

Plenty of local information is available in the cottage together with an OS map of the area. Further tourist information is available in the Information Centre in Tunbridge Wells – only 10 minutes in the car – park in The Pantiles car park.

This is an ideal location for local walks and longer hikes. There are many National Trust and English Heritage properties within easy reach and it is only 30 miles to Rye or Hastings and the coast.

For food shopping the local Post Office and Stores is just up the road from the cottage and sells milk, fruit, vegetables, various grocery items and newspapers. The large Sainsbury’s supermarket is near the Spa Valley railway station in Tunbridge Wells.

The George + Dragon pub is just around the corner and was very busy when we arrived on Thursday evening at 8.00pm – there was only one table left. You would need to arrive earlier or book in advance to be sure of eating. We enjoyed the food but did not feel a second meal there was essential!

We had a brilliant break and wished we had been able to stay longer!
Owner's Response: Many thanks, glad you had a good stay!!

The Old Post Office

tmyorks United Kingdom
Review Submitted: September 27, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
A great time was had at the Old Post Office in Speldhurst. The cottage was very well furnished and comfortable. It had everything that was needed for a weeks stay in what was a lovely area to explore. The surrounding countryside of rolling hills, forestry and farmland was quintessentially British. You can see why Kent is named 'The Garden of England.'

The weather was perfect for trips around vineyards and hop farms within 20 minuets drive and quaint Kentish towns and villages. A bit further afield, if you can find the time, Canterbury and Rye are two must sees. It was also easy to while away the hours on the many footpaths from the doorstep.

The George and Dragon (although quite expensive) was a great place to have a pint on an evening (serving ale brewed only 3 miles down the road). I also had a meal there on the last night of my stay which was cooked to perfection.
