Just recently built with all the amenities - this beautiful home in walking distance to the tidepools is a place you will love.

The Kapoho tidepoools, otherwise known as the Wai Opea Marine Wild Life Preserve, is home to the most incredible snorkeling reserve found anywhere in Hawaii. Just a 4 minute walk from the front door you'll discover this vast ocean region with many individual tidepools. These tidepools are safe, due to the outreaching volcanic shelf that keeps the pounding surf at bay. Some as deep as 40 feet and some as shallow as a couple of feet, but, all are teeming with tropical fish of all species, and the most beautiful coral formations you'll find anywhere in Hawaii.

Since Kapoho and our tiny oceanside village is right on the south east point, it receives the easterly tropical trade winds. It is incredible to sit and relax on the lanai, even on the hottest of days, and experience the cool trades.

The home, sits 500 feet from the ocean. The views from the wrap-around decks are wonderful. Coconut trees are everywhere. Natural fauna is in abundance in the whole community, and of course, from the rear wrap around walkway there is a nice ocean view.

The floors are all tiled, inside and out. The Lanai wraps around the upstairs and is covered by the extra large eves. You can walk all the way around to all the bedrooms that have slider glass doors/screens that open out to the decks, so anytime night or day you can just pull up a chair and relax and view the tropical rain forests. Even when it's pouring rain, because of the overhead roof, you'll never get a drop of rain on you.

There is a full open kitchen with all cookware, and appliances.

There are ceiling fans in every room, and on the lanai. The back star viewing lanai has a BBQ. There is a custom handicap friendly stair case that leads 14 feet up to house plus a two car enclosed garage with door opener. Very important because it keeps your rental car safe from falling coconuts.

The master bedroom with a private bathroom and large jacuzzi bathtub is a great retreat. With lots of fine art and a nice library, free phone calling to the mainland, wonderful neighbors next door and included Internet access, you will be very comfortable. Beyond the back yard is forest, no neighbor, and new neighbor building on the North side of the house. Lots and lots of privacy.

A true Hidden Gem!

My experience with this house was sort of an odd one - we were scheduled to arrive literally the day after Hurricane Iselle made landfall just south of the Vacationland neighborhood. We were unable to stay in the house due to the devastation of the area and after effects of the hurricane - estimates of 9000 people without power and unable to run simple things like lights or really important things like refridgerators or water pumps. The house runs on its own water system that uses solar panels for heating and purifying the water so water was no issue but because there was no power we were able to cancel our reservation and stay on the other side of the island. But this house has an impact that goes far beyond just staying there.

Let me start at the beginning - my reason for picking this house out of the hundreds of possibilites across the island was talking to the owner and builder of the house, Darryl. His passion for his home and the Puna district is contagious and exhilarating. He truely wants his guests to have an amazing experience. He will talk story so be prepared for a chat. He gave me details on all the places we should visit, even describing some of his favorite drives in the area in detail so that months and months ahead of arriving I was already envisioning this wonderland. He is very responsive with calls and emails, always getting back to me within a day if he didn't pick up right away. Very fun person, and you can tell he loves his home and he loves to offer it to people.

The pictures of the house are very accurate, but like Hawaii, they just do not convey the sense of -wow- that you get when you get to the place. Although our stay was cancelled, Darryl suggested we stop by to see the area and check out the house. It really is just so cool, I wish I could tell you all how much I love the place. The artworks you see in the photos are all painted by Darryls mother, a detail that made me feel really at home the moment we stepped in the door. Be sure to look up, the ceiling is one of my favorite details of the home.

The home is cared for by Darryl's longtime friends, Burl and Carol. Way cool people, we were so glad to meet them. They also had tons of ideas of things to do and places for us to drive (since we couldn't stay and relax at the house we decided to see as much of the Big Island as we possibly could.) They treat it as their own with thought and care, Darryl is lucky to have them around.

The house is beautiful and clean with great neighbors who are locals. The nearest town where you could buy food was not too far away. I would caution against saying "ocean views" or "only 500 yards from the ocean" because there is no ocean view and it is 500 yards to the lava rock you must pick your way across to get near the water. You cannot swim there at all. The tidepools were great, but again, you have to hazard the lava rock to enjoy them. Overall this was a fantastic place to stay and I am recommending it to every person I know and I would stay again no problem.

We have rented other homes--Kahonua Hale is not up to island standards. We're very chill, don't want fancy, but clean would have been nice. We phoned the management company as we drove there in order to find out how to let ourselves in. It was dark and we were new to the area. They told us that when we drive into the driveway the headlights will shine on the lock box. However, that wasn't true. We finally found the lock box behind the garage. When we entered, the house smelled of gas. We discovered that a burner on the stove was left on a bit - no flame but on enough to let gas leak. The table by the front door, on the lanai, had a dirty ash tray, with butts & ashes and something else too -- maybe sea weed. The (only) sponge on the sink was dirty & smelly; a liner to put under a dish drying rack on the counter was stained and filthy ... The refrigerator had 2 notes, attached by magnets, in handwriting we could barely read, with stuff like "please cover the TV when you leave" and "take out the garbage" but gave no info as to where to put it. No welcome, here's an introduction to Kapaho, no info at all. Kapoho is cool. The house is near tidepools, and we went there to be near marine life and nature. We wandered around and found them; a map or directions would have been a hospitable bit of info to have at the house. When we rented the house, six months or so ago, the management company had just been retained. But that should have been enough time to figure out where the lock box is, where to dump the trash, and how to clean the place.

Owner's Response: Due to problems like those you describe, we (the management company) have changed housekeepers for this property. Many of the problems you describe were related to that.
