About Mark and Rigina Monk

We started traveling to the Caribbean in 2004, and quickly fell in love with the gorgeous water, beaches and warm sunshine. We live in Michigan and experience some pretty harsh winters, so we cherish every minute we get to spend in the sun! We are self-diagnosed beach bums, and adore the fact that there are literally over a dozen of the very best beaches in the Caribbean within a thirty minute drive of the casa! Depending on our mood, we can choose one for pampering, kayaking, snorkeling, sunning, name it! Plus, we have all the modern conveniences of home, so we never feel as if we are 'roughing it'. There are plenty of large grocery stores as well as small local fruit and vegetable stands. We love this area of Mexico, and think you will, too. We're pleased to share our well-appointed and comfy home and the Yucatan with you!

Mark and Rigina Monk purchased this house in 2008

Why Mark and Rigina Monk chose Akumal

We purchased our lovely casa in 2008 after traveling all over the Caribbean in search of the best place for a vacation home. We landed in this charming little neighborhood and must say, the location cannot be beat! Chan Chemuyil is a short drive away from the most gorgeous white sand beaches we have ever seen! The nearby towns of Chemuyil, Akumal and Tulum all have their distinct charms, and this diversity is what brings us back, over and over. Less than ninety minutes to Playa del Carmen and Cancun, the larger city life is there to experience, with nightclubs, shopping, theatres and sightseeing, if you want to experience urban Mexicana. We hope that whatever you choose to do during your stay, you enjoy it as much as we and our neighbors do!

What makes this house unique

Casa de Risa is one of the few homes in the neighborhood with a swimming pool, and it is the largest. We have enlarged the kitchen significantly to allow for comfortable meal prep and of course, entertaining! The home is equipped with all of the comforts of home and is decorated to inspire relaxation and happiness. All of our furniture is handcrafted by local artisans and everything in our home was individually chosen to reflect the spirit of Life, Love and Laughter. Enjoy!

Absolutely AMAZING!

  • 5 of 5

I can't believe how lucky we were to stay here, it was a phenomenal vacation. Casa de Risa exceeded all of our expectations even after reading all the 5-star reviews. The bed was extremely comfortable, the roof deck with hammock was even better, and the upgraded water pressure meant strong hot showers both inside and out when we returned from a short walk to the beach. I'm torn between recommending this Casa to everyone I know who might wish to spend time in the most gorgeous place I've ever been, and also wanting to keep it a secret to increase the chances that its not already booked for the next time we have a vacation opportunity. My only regret is that we weren't able to to spend more than a week in paradise (also, next time I'm going to rent a 4x4 vehicle for exploring the Sian Ka'an Biosphere located nearby, even though the economy rental car was sufficient for getting around everywhere else). There was a fully stocked kitchen with "Kitchen Aid" cookware and blenders, so we were able to make food and blended drinks when we didn't feel like leaving the Casa, but there were also delicious places to eat nearby in Chemuyil, including some of the best grilled chicken and fish tacos I've ever had. Everyone we met in Chemuyil was extremely friendly and we felt safer there than I have at any other place I've ever vacationed. If you are looking for a quiet place to relax, but close enough to the beach, cenotes, and Tulum that you can never be bored, definitely consider Casa de Risa, just don't book it for the the time I want it next year :)

Enjoyable Vacation Home

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our time in Chemuyil! The private pool was awesome. We loved the bikes and enjoyed riding them into town for meals. The amenities at the house were wonderful. Two pieces of advice (one for travelers and one for the owners),

1.) There is an animal that lives in the storm drain in the road and makes loud noises at night (during part of the year) that reverberate around and most likely will wake you up in the middle of the night. If this happens to you, don't suffer in silence. Talk to the people who are in charge of cleaning and maintaining the place (who live in the same neighborhood) and they will get a board and rock to cover the storm drain during the night so you can sleep.

2.) For the owners: We were there in July and thus had to use the AC quite often. The AC in the bedroom worked great, the one in the family room needed maintenance though. It would low air, but never really got cold. This probably has already been fixed...but thought I'd pass on that info.

All in all, a great price for the place and we had an excellent time! I have encouraged others to try out this community and it seems that this property is one of the best in Chemuyil.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at the casa! Mexico is the summer is amazing, but also brings very hot temperatures and jungle critters! Thank you for bringing the a/c issue and the tree frog noise to our manager's attention right away. We want your stay to be as pleasant as possible and we are available, as owners, 24/7, via email or phone as well. So happy to hear you enjoyed the house, the pool, and the neighborhood!

Happy Family time

My son, daughter-in-law, grandson and myself stayed for 10 days at this wonderful Chemuyil Casa. We have been twice now to this community, and Casa de Risa was a wonderful happy place for all of us, a true lovely vacation time together! I had my birthday here, and we celebrated with a fine dinner up on the roof deck under that stars! Very secure, fantastic neighbours, excellent property managers. Although not everyone would like to have a get away from the resorts or beach front, this Casa is perfect for those who love to be at home, enjoy a community and be part of the rhythm of life. I will come back again!

A special place we would love to call home!

What a peaceful piece of paradise we found in Casa de Risa! The small community of Chan Chemuyil is wonderful, quiet, friendly and beautiful. We loved the Cenote around the corner and jungle walk to the beach. This house has the perfect set up. Larger inside than most and the enclosed front entrance gives a warm welcome. We enjoyed all the personal touches, décor, bed comforter, large bath and beach towels, Ice-packs & coolers etc. We even had a surprise guest! Such a nice place.... a scorpion moved in!!!! Easily caught and let loose in jungle. With that, we now had a good story to tell back home! The pool was super and the rooftop patio was our favorite place to have breakfast and just hang out with drinks! The outside shower was a nice luxury--liked it even better than the inside one. Oh! and to our surprise: daily we were visited by a family of Tucans that go from tree to tree on all sides of the villa! So spectacular. The kitchen was nicely stocked, we appreciated use of the spices, and left some of our own behind. We just wish the oven had been safe to use. Use of the laptop and especially the magic jack phone was an enormous help. Thank you for that. All in all, what a gem in the jungle we enjoyed for 2+ weeks at Casa de Risa. We would love to come back again and again!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the wonderful review! How special that you got to see the toucans! We are so happy that you enjoyed the casa, both inside and out, as well as our unique and charming neighborhood. Thank you for bringing the issue with the oven to our attention; we want every visitor's experience to be perfect! We'd love to have you back!

Comfortable home and great value!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay with our family in Chan Chemuyil. This house is older and in a typical Mexican neighborhood rather than a resort, and it is quite literally in the jungle, but if you are ok with that like we are, it's a great place to stay and make your dollar stretch a little farther!

The house is cute and cozy and well appointed. The owners obviously take a lot of pride in it and have paid attention to details. The linens are good quality, as are the kitchen utensils and cookware, and there is lots of good beach gear (only thing missing was a functional beach umbrella). We really enjoyed having our own private pool and spent some lovely, quiet hours floating on the rafts with our books and drinks while our son napped! The rooftop deck and the front porch were also great, although it was usually too hot or too buggy to use them much in July. The AC units did seem to struggle compete with the summer heat--this probably wouldn't be a problem in cooler months.

But the location is really what makes the house incredible. Xcacel, the beach right across the highway, is easily the most beautiful beach on the whole coast--and there are some beautiful beaches in the Yucatan! The water is surreally blue and clear, and the jungle meets the sand behind you as there are no hotels or restaurants. It was often empty or almost empty...just magical! Such a secret gem.

The house is also very close to attractions like Xcaret and lots of cool cenotes, and it's a short drive to Tulum or Akumal or Playa del Carmen. I would strongly recommend a car, as it makes it so much easier to explore the area, and walking to the beach I think would've been pretty hot and tiring, even though it is doable. The pueblo of Chemuyil was also cool. We enjoyed walking into town for dinner a few times and experiencing the area's real culture, a refreshing alternative to the typical resort town. The people were very friendly!

Overall, this home was a great choice for our family vacation. I would recommend this home to anyone who is looking for a bit of adventure away from the all-inclusive or the luxury resort, but still with the comforts of home.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you enjoyed you time at Casa de Risa and in Chan Chemuyil! The neighborhood is truly unique, consisting of a mix of mostly ex-pats from the US and Canada, as well as a few Mexican families. The town of Chemuyil itself has always been warm and inviting, brimming with the authenticity of a small Mexican village. Everyone feels truly welcome here! And yes, it is most unlike the resort scene and away from from the hustle and bustle of the big tourists area, but still very close to everywhere you want to be. We have replaced the beach umbrella, as well as made repairs to the a/c unit in the living room. We know just how humid it can get in the Riviera Maya! Thank you so much for your kind words. We are glad that we were able to share Casa de RIsa with you and your family!

Perfect spot for our 20th Anniversary!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful week in Casa de Risa in July 2014. The house is located in a charming neighborhood filled with friendly neighbors, many of whom are expats from Canada and the US. We were invited to a neighborhood potlluck and really enjoyed meeting these lovely people.

We got up early each day to go on our adventures and came back to the house each afternoon and relaxed in the pool and on the rooftop deck. We also watched the stars in hammocks from the deck each night. AMAZING VIEW!

The king bed is wonderfully comfortable and the a/c works well in the bedrooms. The house has lots of fluffy bath towels and big beach towels. We were happy to find various coolers to take with us during the day. The house really has everything you need for a day at the beach or tromping around ruins.

My husband enjoyed the stereo and wide variety of CDS in the house. Our kids (not with us on this trip) would have enjoyed the video games and Netflix on the Wii.

We always felt safe in the house. There is a gate in the front and also on the doors. The neighborhood has a security guard in the front, and he also rode his bike around to check on things.

We rented a car, and were glad we did. We liked being able to get out and explore on our own. The house is about 15 minutes from Akumal, 25 from Tulum. We snorkeled in Akumal & ate at several local restaurants near or on the water there. (La Lunita was our favorite!) We went grocery shopping in Tulum and were happy with the well-stocked kitchen in this house. You can really cook a whole meal and have all the pots, pans & kitchen utensils you need.

The closest beach to the house, Xcacel, is lovely and quiet. We loved being away from the crowds.

We hope to return to Casa de Risa on a future trip. It really was a perfect place to stay on our Mexico Adventure. Thanks, Mark & Rigina for sharing you lovely home with us!
