Roosters crowing ,Donkey's braying,,chicks a chirping...hey It's a farm. Benefits include fresh eggs and garden greens, great views, and of course great conversation. We do writing classes, we have level walking paths,A big shady gazebo for morning coffees and a great place to read the newspaper and just gaze over the gardens..
This was my experience at this 'artist's retreat':
• a nice view
• for an extra fee, you will get sporadic wifi on good days
• for an extra fee, you can have a maid clean for you once a week, otherwise, you will clean your own place with the cleaning supplies you purchase
• the simplest amenities such as toilet paper & bottled drinking water were not supplied
• plan to pay for taxis to and from most places you want to go since the bus only runs 3 times per day
• 7 untrained dogs that bark throughout the night
• no bus schedules, maps or other tourist information to be found
• the vegetable garden is more like a weed patch, 'grown for seeds'
I came here on a verbal agreement and paid for 2 months upfront in cash without a receipt. The owner threatened to call the police on me and have me put in jail if I didn't give him even more money before I left. This was A VERY SCARY EXPERIENCE. Definitely not something a single female wants to deal w/in a foreign country.
Late June and early July 2012 we had the pleasure of experiencing one of the most delightful stays in many years of our out of the country travel adventures. On our bucket list we had wanted to visit San Miguel Allende, Mexico. No intention was on our list of spending outrageous amounts of money per night to visit the area. The computer under farms showed a place called SIMPLE CHOICE FARM. E-mailing we got an immediate response from Michael the owner, of availability. Looking at the picture on the internet they had a garden room apartment with pictures, including a picture of a laughing mule and plowing farm lands the old fashion way with mules. This looked like the perfect place for us.
On arrival with our 40ft. RV we tried to pull thru the gate and found the RV fit but not the RV mirrors….no problem, Michael sent for the guys who worked for him and in minutes with dirt, shovel, wheelbarrow and pieces of metal the ground was raised and into the parking area we went.
The apartment was just what we wanted with lots of windows that we could visit the outside within, see the stars at night and shimmering curtains just enough to feel privacy. The kitchen had the latest appliances even down to a Cuisinart blender which we used constantly as we had picked up a box of at least 100 mangos on our journey. Mango smoothies became our healthy drink for our stay.
Going into town was a snap, either step outside and catch the bus right in front of the property or drive into Sorianna”s (the Mexican Grocery Store) right off the main highway, park the car, let Tony wash the car and watch it and off we went in a taxi for about $3.50 US or the free purple bus right to the center of town. No parking problems, no hassles. All this accomplished at the excellent advice of Michael. We visited the magnificent Colonial town, took a trolley for about $7 pp and visited all the districts of the town in comfort with an English speaking tour that departs daily around 4:30p. We are Senior citizens and this was a great relief after walking around early in the day. A lunch restaurant which there are many was found where we spent several hours dining in a typical courtyard beyond the old doors and stone walls of the town.
Arriving back at the farm after touring daily to the multiple towns in the area was the great relief of peace and quiet sitting on the patio looking at the birds, the gurgling fountain and the mountains and scenery around us. The rooster woke us every
If you are in need of a restful and contemplative place to totally unwind this is the place to go. Beauty, sunshine, perfect weather and 5 great dogs to love, who could ask for more? Well, there is more, a great library with books and movies and wonderful accommodating hosts. A short drive into San Miguel gives you a choice of restaurants from down-home style to high-end metropolitan. A newly discovered pyramid, hot springs, horseback riding, and hiking round out a vacation to remember and recommend to family and friends.
I highly recomend Simple Choice Farms. I wanted a week away, to read, walk, take pictures, and visit San Miguel de Allende. This was perfect. Being just outside the city, the mountain sceneries, the beautiful flora and fauna, even the burro and dogs, made for a delightful trip. The facilities are clean and beautiful and all my housing needs were met. The meals provided by the owners were not just sufficient, but mouth-watering. This one is a Must See to Believe kind of retreat!
To live in Simple Choice Farm for a year was one of the most important experience of my life.
I never had the chance to be so close to Nature and the farm is in a privilege place surrounded by the Picacho mountains where you can enjoy beautiful colored sunsets and sundowns.
In my early walks I could appreciate the different plants and flowers depending on the season and the animals, cows, donkeys, horses, sheep, goats and sometimes in the year they were feeding their babies also a great variety of fabulous insects and seeds.
At night the sky is so full of stars that I never got tired of admiring them.
Getting to know Micheal and Judyth was also an enriching experience, we had long, interesting talks and delicious meals, we became good friends.
A very important part of my staying in Simple Choice Farm is that my work as a sculptor was nourished in ways that I never imagined.
