About Patti Merrifield

I live in Colorado and love the Big Island because it has mountains just like home. It also reminds me of my Colorado home because it has opportunities for fun social activities as well as natural unspoiled beauty. I love that Hawaii has both mountains and ocean. I like to be active and there are lots of opportunities for adventure. I can snorkle the beautiful tourquoise ocean or watch a live volcano. No where else could you do both on the same day! My place in Kona has great access, but it is also has all the comforts of my own home. I can refresh, relax and cool off here. Owning this home in Kona on the Big Island is a dream come true.

Patti Merrifield purchased this condo in 2012

Why Patti Merrifield chose Kailua Kona

I chose this property because its location is ideal for families and active vacationers who want to experience everything they can. This place includes everything I want out of a vacation. The ocean and town activities nearby are great and I appreciate having air conditioned comfort when I return home. Having a condo in town means that sometimes part of the group can go one place and part can go somewhere else. This is great if I want to go shopping while my friends are out trying to catch giant fish. We love to explore the island, but it's fun to start your day talking to locals over coffee at one of the nearby restaurants. I also love the story of King Kamehameha living out his final days here in Kona and all the historical sites that are associated with that time period.

What makes this condo unique

Kona Plaza is just steps away from many activities but this condo is also comfortable to come home to after traveling around the island. I love the covered parking, in Kona it is such a convenience!

Excellent Price for an excellent location

  • 4 of 5
This condo was lovely and exactly as pictured. I was very happy to find a two bedroom unit right on the main Alii Dr that was within a reasonable budget. You really can't beat this location. The secure underground parking was an added bonus. I appreciated having a key pad door lock instead of having to fiddle with a hard key.

The kitchen/living area are remodeled and very nice; important as that is where we spent most of our time. The bathrooms were also redone nicely and there were plenty of towels. Those rooms were the most important for us. The Lanai was HUGE and that was a great bonus as well. We ate lunch out there daily, as it is furnished with a large table.

I wish the view was better from the lanai, but really for the price we paid, I don't feel like I can be that picky. There is a partial (small) ocean view, but you can't really tell just how close you are to the ocean unless the cruise ship is in port. It overlooked an ally, roof tops, and a bar. It was fun to people watch from. And the restaurant and night club that it overlooks were not loud or disruptive.

The bedrooms are in need of a little TLC. The furnishings were minimal and outdated. The beds were older; not even comparable to a 3+ star hotel. But all we did was sleep in there. I would much prefer the focus be on the living/kitchen/bath area than the bedrooms any day. The dryer was also out of service when we arrived, which was a bummer as I had small children and packed with the intention of doing laundry. Hang drying just doesn't feel right to me.

We brought a Pack 'n Play with us and left it there. It was cheaper to ditch it in Hawaii than to rent it from the local shop. So I hope you future renters can put it to good use.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and for leaving your very nice pak-n-play for the use of our future guests with small children. However, I had to let you and those potential guest reading these reviews, know that our beds are new!
One is around a year and a half old and the other was less than four months old at the time of your stay. We bought the newest bed at Koloko furniture, a reputable Kona business. I was assured by the dealer and the price of the bed that it was top of the line. Perhaps the lack of box springs led you to believe this bed was old, but we were told this is new and preferable construction for beds today.
I assure you and all my past and futures guests that I will never have old beds in my condo. The bedrooms are small, the dressers are inexpensive, but the beds, bedding and pillows are all new and expensive. The sheets average over 500 thread count and cost $100+ per set. The comforters are from Macy's and less than one year old. I am constantly renewing my condo; buying a new dryer, new refrigerator, new bed this year. I replenish bedding, towels, pots, pans, and other supplies sometimes two to three times a year. This is my home also and I love it the way it is; with clean new things that are kept clean and periodically replaced.
Sincerely,
Patti

Great price, great location!

  • 4 of 5
We have been to the island multiple times, and our favorite thing to do when we are not at the beach or out on a 4 wheel exploration, is to visit the resteraunts and shops on Ali'i Dr, so our #1 priority was finding a cheap dwelling as close to Ali'i as possible, and this place accomplished that. I would recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a bed and kitchen and will be spending most of their trip out on the go. The owners were very responsive and accomodating and responded quickly to all of our questions throughout the booking and stay. Based on what we were looking for I give this a 4 star rating. I would have given them 5 stars except the beach equipment wasn't on par with other VRBO's that we have stayed at, and the we didn't have a dryer during our stay. The 1 set of snorkeling gear was broken and missing a fin, and there was no cooler or beach chairs, which are all a must when staying on the big island. We did purchase 2 new snorkeling sets and left them behind for the next renters. The dryer was still in the process of being replaced, but we were notified of this inconvenience prior to our stay. All of the other amenities are as advertised. The Lanai is large and great for eating your morning and evening meals, but it doesn't get much sun or have great views. The pool was clean and open everytime that we looked. We used one of the large grill decks, and it is great for hanging out, but the views of the ocean are blocked by the big trees across the street. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, this is probably not the place, but you should also be looking at the resorts, or atleast other VRBO's that cost much more, but if you are looking for a cheaper place to sleep and cook while being right near Ali'i, then this should be a consideration. We will definitely be looking for availability the next time we come back to Kona, and will be recommending this place to others that make the trip!

Family Holidays at Kona Plaza

  • 4 of 5
Our family of 5 adults spent six nights post-holidays at the Kona Plaza. It was clean and very much as the photos represented. 2 bathrooms, although small, was a definite plus. We enjoyed the central location, easy access to highways , as well as convenience to local businesses. internet connection good. We cooked more than eating out and the availability of the grill decks was nice. Patty was very helpful with advance planning and responsive to emailed issues.
We are frequent vacation renters and appreciate the value of detailed reviews. We offer the following comments, not to be critical, but to assist future renters in being prepared for their best stay.
*Kitchen is quite functional with nice appliances but is tight for multiple cooks.
*This rental was on the minimal end for kitchen supplies with no foil, plastic wrap, oil, or condiments–one roll of paper towels and a few spices. TP was also a limited supply.
*Beach equipment is limited. Snorkeling equipment is child size. No beach chairs or small cooler.
*Only 1 beach towel and 5 bath towels so we needed to use the same towels for both. The dryer was very loud so its use was very limited. Patty did attempt to get us additional towels but there was a communication issue with the maid service. I trust that dryer has been repaired restoring laundry convenience.
*Sleeper sofa was not usable for our stay and although Patty offered for us to purchase a portable bed, it was a lesson that the island has its limitations in product availability. Rental fee was discounted and much appreciated.Again, I trust that the sofa has been repaired or replaced, but if you need sleeping for 5, confirm with Patty.
*The lanai is a very nice size and we used it for all of our meals. However, very loud bars/clubs next door resulted in our being inside with lanai doors closed after about 8-9pm. This, plus a limited ability to open the bedroom windows, means this is not a rental that has beautiful Hawaiian breezes flowing through, if that is something you desire.
*Ramp from street into building parking lot is steep. Beware of clearance with rental car.
*Only 1 key provided for arcade door and grill decks so coordination is needed. Exploring leads to other ways around the building.
Again, these comments are meant to be informative. It is hard not to have a great time on the Big Island! Sitting here back in the land of snow we are trying to hold on to our memories of the island beauty. Thank you Patty.

Amazing condo with great access to historic Kailua Kona

  • 5 of 5
Dan and Patti were great hosts for our 3 weeks in Kona. The condo was clean and exactly as described in the photos and the posting. Walking in immediately felt like being home away from home. The condo has great access to Ali'i Drive where all of the restaurants and shops in the historic area of town are located. The 2 bed/2 bath combo was great for our group of 4. We would definitely recommend this to our friends and family and have already contacted the owners about coming back next year.

Excellent value in the best location, walk to everything, very nicely appointed and maintained.

  • 5 of 5
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. There are a couple of changes not shown in the interior photos; a dining table in front of the kitchen bar, and an iPod speaker system just under the TV which makes using Pandora very nice, both very nice additions. This condo has a roomy and comfortable feel and is stocked with everything we wanted for our vacation. Boogie boards, snorkeling equip, grass mat, etc. The washer/dryer was a great benefit as we could pack for a few days and spend as long as we liked there without having to take hours out of our vacation for laundry. Excellent location!

The owners, Dan & Patti, were the best. They responded to our calls and emails promptly and took care of the one minor glitch we encountered without delay. The entire transaction from the initial question about availability, which was short notice, to refund of our deposit was very orderly, professional, friendly, and accurate, which we appreciate very much.

The view from the lanai is not a wide view of the beach or the mountains, but you can see a peek-a-boo view of both which is sufficient. Directly across the street is a small very popular sushi shop and you can watch the wait line from the lanai to see when to make the trip. The lanai is quiet being off the main drag and gets just enough sun to be comfortable without burning.

A previous review mentioned excess light in the bedrooms and odor from the trash chute. Black-out liners are being made to supplement the curtains, but we were comfortable with the filtered light and could sleep just fine. The trash chute is located behind a closed door in a closet near the condo but we noticed no odor walking by it which we (and most of the other residents) did numerous times daily. The parking garage is secure and kept very clean. Will definitely do this condo again!

Notes:
With so much to do in town, families do not always have to agree on all activities. Mom may want to golf or shop while Dad goes deep-sea fishing or takes a jog along the Ironman route. Part of the family may want to take a driving tour while others stay and play at the beach or pool. This a place to make wonderful vacation memories. You don't even need a car if you don't want one. You can shuttle to the airport, tour bus to excursion sites, and spend time getting to know one of the best little towns in the world. There is so much to see and do; you'll want to return over and over.
