Great location and comfortable home like accommodations for four to six guests

The Kuakini Garden House is a great place for the cost-conscious vacationer. The house has a beautiful spacious upstairs unit perfect for one couple or family. There is also a studio bedroom downstairs with two twin beds, a bathroom (shower), and a small kitchen. The two-story house is surrounded by tropical gardens and a nearly perfect segment of the historic (circa 1850) Great Wall of Kuakini. The house is conveniently located less than a mile from the quaint Kailua Kona village with its restaurants, shops, nightlife, farmer’s markets, Alii Drive, historical landmarks such as the Hulihee Palace, the Kailua pier (where the Ironman race begins), and beaches.

There are two bedrooms upstairs. The master bedroom has a king-size bed and the second bedroom a queen bed and a bathroom. The downstairs studio has two twin beds. There is a covered lanai off the upstairs living room with a view of the ocean. This is a great place for enjoying your coffee while reading the local newspaper (If you wish, a daily newspaper is included in the rental). There's also a screened-in lanai off the master bedroom perfect for storing bikes, and exercising. You'll find a full kitchen complete with granite counter tops, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, a full range, 18 cubic foot refrigerator, coffee maker, blender, huge pantry, and all the dishes and utensils needed for in-home dining. Maximum occupancy upstairs is four people and two in the downstairs studio.

The units are not air-conditioned, however, there are ceiling fans throughout the house.

There's a 42-inch flat screen TV in the living room, featuring Direct TV and a BluRay Player. The studio has a 22 inch flat screen with Direct TV.

The garden backyard has a barbecue gas grill and for your laundry needs you'll find a large capacity front-loading washer and dryer in the backyard laundry cabinet.

Beach chairs, beach towels, and coolers will help you enjoy our beautiful nearby beaches.

Only the upstairs and the studio bedroom of the Kuakini Garden House are available for guests.

The owner and his family might be in the downstairs unit when they are on-island keeping the property maintained and the house beautiful.

Sorry, no pets are allowed and thank you in advance for not smoking in the house and on the premises. Six is the maximum number of guests and there's off-street parking for guest vehicles (owner's green truck is there too).

Perfect vacation home

I highly recommend this property. We were a family of 5 that stayed here for 13 days. It was a destination wedding for our son. He stayed at a nearby resort with their friends. We had everyone over for a BBQ the first night they arrived and a pizza party on their last night. This place has all the conveniences of home. There's a large and well landscaped backyard. And, a roomy lanai and living room for an indoor gathering. There's also a washer and dryer for you laundry. And, there's an ice chest, beach chairs & beach towels for the beach. There's enough room in the driveway for 3 cars (actually 4 cars but the owner has his car parked there). Every morning we would have our breakfast out on the lanai. The view of the vegetation was nice and colorful. And, the sites and sounds of the birds were soothing. There was also a mongoose that we often saw running about the yard. The only regret that I have is that we were not there during mango season as there is a large mango tree in the back yard. The tree was in full bloom, so I suspect it bears a lot of fruit. The owner and property manager provided excellent customer service. This site is well worth the very reasonable price. It's also a great location with lots of places within walking distance.

Nice, but not as advertised

I travelled to Hawaii with my family in the hope that we would have a quiet, boring vacation. It was a little frustrating to realize that the owner does live in the lower portion of the Kuakini House. While some vacationers may not have any problems with the owner being on-site, we found it uncomfortable. Especially since we felt like we needed to walk softly and whisper on the second floor. That was particularly difficult with my father (who snores) and my under 6 month old infant (who cries). I don't recall that a live-in owner was advertised when booking the home.
Another thing that should be mentioned is that you in a very residential neighborhood, with all of the normal residential noises and issues. The apartment complex next door has people who seem to argue loudly. The master lanai and master bed also look directly into the second story of the apartment complex. There are motorcycles and diesel pickups that drive up and down the street at all hours. We also watched unfortunately as the small neighbor dog got run over one morning!
The house itself is nice and the gardens in the back are beautiful. There is a "guidebook" with some very specific instructions on how to use the house. The second floor can also be very warm. We had temperatures in the high 80's in December.
Overall, I would say we had an OK time, but I don't think we will return.

I'm sorry you and your family didn't find my house to be to your satisfaction. I state in the house description that my family or I might be downstairs during a guest rental. About the temperature upstairs, I wish you would have told me you were warm upstairs. As I mention in the house instructions, there is an attic fan that exhausts warm air.
I believe I mentioned to you that I spoke with the owner of the building next door about the loud arguing. It didn't occur again after I spoke with the owner.
Yes, my house is in a neighborhood and it was very sad that a puppy was hit by a car. Again, I'm sorry that added to your not enjoying your stay at my house.

Just like home....maybe a better

The stay here was absolutely fabulous. Nice 2 story house a 15 minute walk from anything in downtown Kona-Kailua area. 10 minute walk to the beach and shops, 15 minutes to the Kona Brewing Company. House feels like home and the amenities were great. The neighborhood was very quiet. The property is well taken care of and feels like you're staying in someones home. Nice furniture, beds, marble countertops, plenty of hot water, amazing lanais and plenty of room to stretch out if you have a large group. The house even has a detached suit that includes a full bath, tv, and fridge, to put those in your party that you might want to distance during your stay. Direct tv, fast internet service, washer and dryer, full kitchen and plenty of off-street parking. We had the privilege to stay while the owner was in town and even met the property manager by chance. Both individuals were very kind, courteous and accommodating. This will be at the top of my list when we come back and stay and I would recommend anyone stay here.

Quiet and clean

The home was perfect. It was very well stocked with a lot of beach towels and kitchen items for cooking our food. The only thing we had to buy were the food. It was within walking distance to the local farmer's market and a lot of shops and restaurants and Kailua bay. The surrounding neighbors were quiet after dark. We had a private parking space.

Good location, good accomodations

The site was within walking distance of Kailua harbor, shops, restaurants, and easy access to highways. Kitchen was full service. Space was generous. Parking was off street. Neighborhood was quiet after dark and restful. View from balcony was of flowering trees and a bit of the bay. Walk up one flight of stairs to upper floor provided breeze to cool off evenings.
