I am born&grown, educated in Amsterdam, but lived and worked for years in tropical areas as a doctor (clinical and public health). My wife Carla works for the Municipality of Amsterdam. We love to make long bicycle tours in Holland and abroad. We are active in a local group of climate activists for CO2 reduction among citizens.
Anrik Engelhard purchased this cabin in 2001
Carla became 'claustrophic' in our previous 7 th floor apartment. To our surprise we ended up in Amsterdam North where nature is in the backyard....We were very lucky to find this place and never take it for granted.
After an exiting day in town get rid of the noise, the dust. Park your car secure in front of the house at no cost. Even better, leave your car next day; take our (free!) bicycles. After 20 minutes you are in town after enjoying the view from the (free/7x24) ferry. Even taxi drivers say: 'Wow, I didn't know we have places like this in Mokum' !! (Amsterdam).
This was a warm, lovely and charming place - just like our the accommodation owner. We stayed three days with two teenage daughters - and would gladly return. Anrik, our host, was helpful, informative and kind - nothing seemed too much trouble for him. The bikes he gave us - included in the cost - were in good condition and we enjoyed cycling the route to the ferry into Amsterdam. The accommodation was attractive-looking and clean, with nice decor and beautifully warm in a chilly Amsterdam, thanks to underfloor heating and good insulation. The sofabed was comfortable and very easy to take out and put away. A great short stay - too short for us! Thank you very much, Anrik.
Anrik and Carla are amazing hosts. They were warm and friendly right from our arrival. We took the train to Central Station from the airport, and then simply took a taxi from there to the home because we were tired from our 12 hours of travelling. It was 23 euro for the taxi. Upon arrival we were greeted with Carla's warm smile at the front door. The home and property are beautiful! She walked us around into their large garden area where we were lead into a wonderful newly built cottage. The temperature was warm inside, and a nice bottle of red wine and a few pilsners awaited our arrival. We showered off in the wonderful hot shower, and put on the warm robes supplied by these thoughtful hosts (we have stayed in many VRBO's over the years and these two have really put a lot of thought into the smallest of details which can help to make a stay so comfortable). After enjoying the bottle of wine we had a nice long nap! Then it was off on the bicycles to explore town. What fun! There are a few routes into town, but we choose the route which included the free ferry. It is a very pleasant 20 minute bike ride on cobblestoned bike paths to the ferry. We chose to park the bikes before getting on the ferry most days and then walk throughout town. The ferry takes about 5 minutes and takes you straight to Central Station. From the station everything in the city is accessible either by foot, trolley, or metro. Closer to the house we enjoyed riding the bikes into the Waterlands and all of the nearby countryside towns. The local market/restaurant is very high quality and well priced. It has everything you could need and is only a 10 minute stroll along the waterfront. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we are already planning our next visit!! Thanks again to both Anrik and Carla for helping to make our trip so wonderful!!
Access to transportation is easy so location in North Amsterdam is ideal for quiet sleep and possible visit to countryside. The owners are the most wonderful hosts with helpful tips, maps and suggestions. I will return here if I am fortunate to visit the area again.
We loved Garden House in North Amsterdam! The little house is so pretty, situated in a quiet residential neighbourhood, within a beautiful garden [changed from this picture, it is now filled with flowers which attract butterflies!]. The location was easy to reach, using the very good links to public transit on the web site. There is a great market in easy walking distance, selling all kinds of delicious food/produce, as well as a cafe. Getting in and out of either Amsterdam [bike along the bike path and free ferry to the central station] or the surrounding countryside is very easy, there are bikes provided [very ‘typical’ Dutch bikes] and cycling in the NL is fantastic!
A washing machine would have been lovely, however, there is a good washing line and the weather was perfect so all our washing dried in the sunshine!
Our hosts were away, but the neighbours we were given 2 neighbours as contacts and they were very helpful. We loved being part of this welcoming community and hope to return.
Beautiful house in a beautiful place. We stayed for three days in April and regretted that we could not stay longer. Very cozy and clean house with everything you might need inside. We were greeted by Anrik and his wife who offered fruits, wine and a local beer. Travel to the centre of Amsterdam is very easy and enjoyable. Really nice ride on a bike and 5 min by free ferry or 20 min walk to a tram and 7 min on a tram. As a result-free parking, free bike and free travel (if you choose the first option). Max 30 min to central station. 10 min walk from the house is a local supermarket with very good quality local food and a nice cafe were you can get freshly made breakfast. Anrik was very helpful in supplying us with travel guides, maps and explaining in detail were to go and what to see. We are now planning to come back on a cycling trip for a week. Highly recommended!
We absolutely loved our time at Bed and Bike Amsterdam. It is in a beautiful quiet location, yet only half an hour to get right to the heart of the city centre by bike and ferry. Carla and Anrik were the perfect hosts, always on hand to give useful advice and swap stories at the end or start of the day.
The cottage is beautiful, very clean, stylish and well equipped.
If you are thinking of booking Bed and Bike Amsterdam, don't hesitate another minute- just do it!!!
The region around the Garden House is typically Dutch: history of our struggle against the sea; where Rembrandt painted; historical and contemporary architecture; tour along the fishermans villages along the IJsselmeer (Volendam, Edam, Marken) Open air museum Zaanse Schans. And... van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, Eye (film museum), and just walk along the canals.... Amsterdam is great, though small: everything within easy reach!
