SECLUDED MOUNTAIN HOME, BEST VALUE ON THE MOUNTAIN

Ridgway House Rental Photos and Description

This lovely home is snugly tucked into the very top edge of a 9,000ft. ridge, boasting spectacular 180 degree views over the Cimarron and the Sneffels ranges. The house is secluded at the very end of the road with it’s own cul de sac, hence no traffic other than that which is intended for this address.

There are two bedrooms upstairs one with a kingsize bed featuring a beautiful hand made quilt and ensuite bathroom and bidet, the second, also used as an office has a very comfortable full size futon and a full bathroom across the hall.

The main area upstairs incorporates large living area with gas fireplace, dining area and spacious kitchen, cathedral ceiling and full length windows looking out onto the wraparound deck to maximize the breathtaking views. There is a gas barbecue grill on the upper deck. The fully equipped kitchen with Italian porcelain tile counters, granite sink, fridge with ice-maker, second fridge for drinks, smooth top range, dishwasher and compactor is a cook’s dream. The large island has four stools and the attached dining area seats eight with built in leaves in the dining table.

Phone, satellite flat screen TV and WIFI is available.

Large laundry has front load washer and dryer and Italian porcelain tiled floor, the main area has solid wood floors and Berber carpet in the bedrooms. We personally designed and custom built this home for retirement, an escape from the Phoenix summers and utilized quality materials for beauty and comfort. Custom made Roman shades at all windows and doors offer the most expansive views and extra insulation.

Downstairs is a beautiful large walk out basement area with in-floor heat and Berber carpet, a small gas fire for ambience, comfortable queen size sleeper with down comforter and identical 180 degree views of valley and mountains with full bathroom - when we are in residence we use this for our family and friends accommodation. There are two fold away beds also available.

Roads are open all year and there is much to offer for recreation in every season whether you are looking for a relaxing break from the world with a glass of wine on the deck or a good book by the fire, enjoying stunning sunsets or high energy sports in the mountains! The fabulous Telluride ski resort is less than an hour drive for snow sports in winter and hiking and biking and jeeping other seasons. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing from the door.

The famous Swiss- like town of Ouray is only 30 minutes drive, offering unique stores and restaurants and trailheads for hiking, biking and ATV’s

The National forrest is only minutes away.

The little town of Ridgway is 8 miles down the mountain, offering quaint stores, antiques and a variety of restaurants, including first rate Thai food and the award winning Colorado Boy Brewery with their fabulous pizzas. Bicycle rental and fishing excursions are available in the town.

Our friends and family have enjoyed many wonderful vacations with all there is to offer locally, excellent restaurants, unique stores and antiquing for the less energetic.

We are each from coastal regions, one from Boston the other from Australia so our first love may have been the ocean but the lure of the cool mountains and the opportunity for family and friends to also enjoy winter sports made this location ideal. We needed a retirement escape from the oppressive heat of the AZ desert summers and everyone who has ever visited in any season has fallen in love with our mountain retreat.

Roslyn and Walter Atwood purchased this house in 2000

In the mid 1990's we visited friends who had a cabin on this unique ridge overlooking pine and aspen forested valleys and mountain ranges. The first morning when we awoke to find three large bucks with huge antlers snoozing outside our bathroom window sold us on the area, the breathtaking views only cemented this goal! Since then we have observed multiple examples of the local wildlife, birds from tiny finches and brilliant bluebirds to Golden and Bald Eagles, elk, mountain lion and Black Bear. Our visitors highlight is likely to be a bear sighting!

There are only about 10 homes with this unique position and views and the enticement of living in a pristine forest of wildlife, the laid back lifestyle and a wonderful climate was irresistible so we determined to seek a lot on this same ridge. When this two acre lot came available, in spite of the challenges of building up here, we jumped at the chance to purchase the property and then with great care and loving attention to detail we built our home here in 2000.

Great house

  • 5 of 5
The house was perfect for our family of 6. We spent as much time as possible on the deck. The view from the deck is a must experience. The house was well stocked. I would recommend this house to anyone that likes to get away from towns. Its about a 20 min drive to Ridgway. However, you could drive faster and miss all the wildlife. The owner is a pleasure to with work with. Rental process is very simple. Thank you for allowing us to stay!

Summer Vacation

We loved the view. The home was clean and well equipped with what we needed. It was unusually hot for Colorado so did get a little hot in the upstairs bedroom but opening the windows did provide a nice breeze. The road getting there seemed like a long drive up and was very dusty, but it was usually dry. Overall the owners were very nice to work with and our family enjoyed their stay. I would suggest a drive on the Million Dollar Highway, it was excellent! Also, John Wayne fans,Ridgeway was a location of the filming of True Grit.

Great Family Get-away

  • 5 of 5
What a wonderful, relaxing and warm home that has been created here high in the mountains, with fabulous views and peaceful ambiance. We took our granddaughter (9 y.o.) for spring break and she had a wonderful time. We are from Phoenix and she had not seen snow and was thoroughly thrilled to be able to play in the snow and build snowmen. The house is well appointed, comfortable and could not have been better for our relaxing time away and retreat from the desert. We enjoyed Ridgway, Ouray and Telluride as well as early morning and evening snows (we visited in early March). Had opportunities to see numerous wildlife and again the views from the deck were fabulous. I would highly recommend this warm and comfortable home to my friends and family. It was a pleasure working with the owners who were very accommodating and gave good suggestions for places to visit in and around the area.

Return visit

  • 5 of 5
Returned for a six day stay of relaxation, hiking, viewing new scenery and socializing with the locals. My review from last year is still valid, the San Juans are breathtaking. Weather was enjoyable and experienced a daily shower that brought forth double rainbows and amazing clouds; consequently, no hike to a 14,000'+ peaks this year although plenty of hiking lower elevations. Enjoyed local eateries in both Ridgway, e.g. Colorado Boy, and in Monterose, e.g. The Stone House. The rental process was smooth and the property is all the owner states on the website. Already planning my next trip!

Gorgeous and secluded

  • 5 of 5
We stayed here during mid August. The view of the mountains is unobstructed and gorgeous. Birds were plentiful with many different types were eating from several feeders scattered around the expansive deck. We especially enjoyed all of the Hummingbirds. Most of the time there were a dozen or more around a single feeder. Evenings were cool with nice breezes. The home itself is quiet large with a modern well equiped kitchen and a great entertainment system. The beds were so soft and comfortable and it was so nice to wake up to the gorgeous sunrises over the Cimmaron range. All in all, we could not have been more satisfied with our stay. Quiet, lovely, and peaceful would be the best way to describe the place. We have already booked a return trip for a few days in the fall, when the Aspens should put on a beautiful display as they are the predominate tree at this 9000 foot altitude and are thick in all directions.
