I have been returning to Kauai since first living here in 1975. Hale Pulehu'a is located on the best beach on the entire island of Kauai. I designed Hale Pulelehu'a to appeal to our multi-generational family. The house is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the North Shore and is close to so many great activities. There are so many spectacular things to do within walking distance of the house that you may not even need to get in your car!
My wife and I brought our families (8 people altogether, no kids) to Hale O'Pulelehu'a for Christmas and had a great time.
The location is fantastic, just a 30 second walk down a path to a secluded beach, and a 5 minute walk west along the beach gives you great views of the mountains. We watched the sun rise there while bobbing in the water and it was a little slice of heaven. There were early morning rainbows and beautiful sunsets almost every day. Just a gorgeous part of Kauai. You can also walk the beach to Kalalau trail, and down the road to some botanical gardens.
The house was great for a family vacation. We had the main house and the guest house, but just used the guest house for sleeping. The main house was really spacious so we didn't feel crowded, including quiet areas to read on the lanai on a lazy day. We all love cooking and the huge kitchen and dining counter and table were great for snacks and meals, and the big gas bbq area downstairs was comfortable and got a lot of use. There was plenty of snorkel equipment, beach towels and chairs to go around.
It's a short drive to Hanalei and Princeville for any supplies or restaurants, and Anini beach isn't too far, but other parts of the island take a while (it's a long drive to Waimea).
The winter weather was surprisingly good. Some rain but most days were beautiful, hot and sunny. The water was a bit rough at Tunnels (much calmer in spring) but Anini was relatively calm.
We had a super vacation in January 16-24, 2015 at this spacious North Shore house! 8 of us stayed in the house and 2 more in the Guest House located just across the lawn in the tropical backyard. The big kitchen is well equipped so we were able to make our own Happy Hours & complete, tasty meals. (We planned ahead, then shopped at Costco, Walmart, Safeway & Foodland when we landed. Nothing is far from anything else, and these stores are right along the way to the house)
The big gas BBQ allowed for easily & perfectly grilled local fish. The indoor and downstairs /outdoor tables are big enough for us all to sit down together. Cheers!
The bedrooms are fresh, airy and the beds very comfy. There are plenty of beach and bath towels. The Washer & dryer were handy for a mid-week wash.
WiFi, TV and cellphones all work just fine, even though the location is (delightfully) off the beaten track.
The beach across from the house is a 1 minute stroll through a bamboo 'tunnel' and is gorgeous and peaceful. It features the same view as our Hawaiian Airlines MasterCard!! Swim with the locals, read, sun bathe, snorkel, have a campfire, play in the sand, watch world-class kite surfers and/or whales(in season!), enjoy stunning sunrises and sunsets, take long strolls down to Tunnels Beach and beyond.
The famous Kalalau Trail starts just 2 miles down the very pleasant neighborhood 'highway'. We recommend the 8 mile (total) jungle hike to Hanakapiai Falls! We felt very comfortable doing our 4 mile roundtrip exercise jogs along the 'highway', too!
Hanalei's shops, grocery store, cafes, churches, surf lessons, big beach, swimming, history, Saturday Farmers Market are a very pretty 10 minute drive away. Princeville's just a few minutes further, if golfing is on your agenda.
We got reasonable airfares on Hawaiian Airlines out of Oakland, CA. Alaska Air has good prices, too, from Oakland and San Jose.
Check out DiscountHawaiicarrentals.com for some of the best pricing. Extra drivers cost $10 daily in Hawaii (free of charge in Calif. for example) but this rental site can arrange for up to 2 extras without a fee, if you reserve early.
Our vacation at Hale Pulelehu'a was nothing short of perfect, Bill has thought of everything. We look forward to visiting again in the not-too-distant future!
This has become our absolute favorite spot to vacation. An incredible house--large, spacious, clean and beautifully decorated--that is perfect in so many ways. As an active family, we enjoyed swimming, snorkeling, hiking to Hanakapa'i Falls, bike riding and surfing. Every evening at sunset, we grabbed sodas and wine and enjoyed happy hour on the beach...just a short 50-yd walk through a tree-covered path directly in front of the house...you end up on the most beautiful beach I have ever been to. The sunrises and sunsets from the beach are incredible. It is a truly a magical place.
We just returned from Kauai and Hale Pulelehu'a house. When I searched for a place to stay I looked at hundreds of homes from south to north end. I was bringing a family of 6, kids all young adults and wanted to find a place that gave the more island feel, less touristy. I have to say this house did truly satisfy that goal. It was very spacious and gave us plenty of room to spread out and enjoy each other without being on top of each other. Additionally the beach equipment, kitchen and cooking equipment made other activities less expensive and more fun. The immediate beaches are the best on the island. I kick myself for not getting to Tunnels Beach sooner to snorkel. It is by far the best snorkeling on the Island and only 5 minutes away or less. We did go over the Memorial Day weekend and it was pretty crowded so if you can go on a non holiday week as the little towns get overloaded as do the small roadways. That was the only down side. We enjoyed coming back and cooking on the outdoor barbecue and eating on the deck or downstairs patio. Oh last thing, the tropical birds are a nice way to wake up so you won't need to bring an alarm clock.
I recently visited Kauai with my husband and 2 other couples and stayed at Hale Pulelehu’a. We absolutely loved everything about the house!!! It is decorated in a beautiful, comfortable style and is kept remarkably clean. The kitchen has everything you need to cook in, and there is a grill on the patio as well. Linens are provided, as well as beach gear (towels, mats, chairs, snorkel gear, coolers...)! You can't beat falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves and raindrops, and waking up to the songbirds - you feel like you're in the jungle! It's heaven! With the beach so close, we caught sunrise a few mornings and sunset every night. During our stay, we traveled the island and saw all of the major sites (Waimea Canyon, hiked the Na Pali coast trail, went surfing, ATV tour, a luau at the Hayatt)... but we always enjoyed coming home to the quiet, relaxing North shore each afternoon! Most afternoons, we had the beach to ourselves. A bonfire on the beach at night is a must. On a clear night, the sky is just littered with stars. It's a dream vacation! The owner is very easy to communicate with and handled everything professionally. The entire package really exceeds all expectations - it's perfect. We can't wait to return, and would highly recommend this property as the best place to stay on Kauai!
