Located on a 40 acre Horse (AKA Dude) Ranch, Happy Acres is just 7 easy miles East of the quaint little town of Dunnellon & the Rainbow River. It is also only 12 miles south west of Ocala. For more pictures of the Ranch and Lonesome Dove please refer to our Happy Acres Ranch, web page link below. Almost everything we do is somehow related to horses. Trail riding is our claim to fame but most everyone who comes to the Ranch (whether it be for Square Dancing, Hay Rides, BBQ's, Meetings, Clinics, or parking their RV’s) come to see the horses. At this time we have 15 registered quarter horses, No old broken down nags. By staying at one of our Cottages you will automatically get a 10% discount off of anything the Ranch offers.
The Ranch has 3 barns with 33 stalls. Nineteen of those are in two newly constructed concrete block barns. These two new barns offer new modern bathroom facilities. Also we provide private tack rooms for boarders. Our stalls are 12’ X 12' but can be enlarged to 24’ X 12’ for foaling or post-natal care. We also provide sleeping quarters in the barn for owners or grooms on one or two day lay over known as Happy Trails Lodge. For boarders who want to work their mounts polishing up their skills we have two arenas one lighted. We also have a 50’ round pen.
Lake Otting Park, just 2 miles west of the ranch offers tennis and picnicking and some gorgeous 100 year old oak trees. The area surrounding the ranch has 50 miles of trails just outside the front gate and The Pruitt Trailhead (only 3 miles from the Ranch) merges into the Florida Greenway (now a State Park) which provides trail riding through the central part of the State. You can trail ride all day and camp at night. We’ll bring your gear & food and pick up the horses. In the morning we’ll return with the horses and pick up your gear.
The famous Rainbow River offers a good diversion to the Ranch. There you can visit the Rainbow Springs State Park. If you would like to see what Florida looked like before all the people came that’s the place. Take a relaxing boat trip or swim, float, snorkel, dive or fish on the river. Do you like photography? You’ll see turtles, herons, ducks, otters & maybe even an elusive alligator. Dunnellon brags that they are the Bass Fishing Capital of Florida.
The Ranch is 1 hour & 15 minutes from the Orlando or Tampa Airports & less to Disney and most of the Theme parks. Also, Salt water fishing in the Gulf of Mexico is less than 20 minutes away & the renowned Florida favorite, Daytona Beach is less than 90 minutes East of Happy Acres.
In August 2005 Jim Moore left the hustle & bustle of the construction business in West Palm Beach, FL & purchased a little farm in Dunnellon, FL (just 12 miles south west of Ocala.) It soon became known as Happy Acres Ranch. It was purchased only for a get-away retreat at first. Then when the housing bust came Moore began liquidating as many properties as he could all over the State and eventually regrouped at the Ranch. The idea of a Dude Ranch never entered Moore’s mind at first but after building various barns and other facilities visitors began asking if they could come to see the horses. One thing led to another and here we are today...a “dude ranch.”
When we were shopping in 2005 for a place to use as a family retreat in the North Central Florida area we looked, among other places, at the Rainbow River area. Even though we found the River area very appealing we wanted more land. We wanted a place where we could have horses, cows, chickens a garden or whatever we wanted without disturbing our neighbors. When we saw the property now known as Happy Acres Ranch, we just fell in love. For us it was heaven. We hope visitors find it as wonderful as we have.
The view itself is worth the visit. A beautiful pristine look at the Ranch from atop a hill looking down on the barns and pasture with the horses. Sitting on the back screened porch in one of our rockers with a cup of coffee watching the sun come up is very satisfying. If you are not an early riser then looking at the sun go down from the front porch again in one of our rockers with a cocktail is just as pleasurable.
Inside the house not only do we have WI-FI internet service for your lap top but satellite DIRECTV with all those movie channels, news channels and the NFL ticket. If you come from Wisconsin, let’s say, you can watch the Packers play on Sunday. The full kitchen offers microwave, roaster, stove with oven & all the dishes, pots & pans needed for a Thanksgiving dinner. We have two refrigerators one in the kitchen and one in the 2 car garage. Also in the garage we have a crib and high chair for young buckaroos. In the winter months the fireplace gives you that romantic ambiance. In the Master bedroom there is a king size bed, a massage chair for those sore muscles after that trail ride. There is a walk in shower in the master bath. There is also another king size bed in the front bedroom and twins in the other. There is a Bar B Q on the back porch where you can charcoal some burgers, steaks or fish.
All linens and towels needed are in the closets with a washer and dryer if needed. We provide you a golf cart to zip around the Ranch included in the rent. You get priority on trail rides schedules and a 10% discount off the price. You are welcome to have visitors to enjoy your vacation experience. - We hope to see you soon
